INTRODUCTION

 What is EW ?

❑ Electronic Warfare (EW) is not strictly 'electronic',

❑ It is not conducted using electrons; rather it is electromagnetic waves.

❑ It uses the entire range of the electromagnetic spectrum,

some people also call it Electromagnetic Warfare.

3
INTRODUCTION

 Electronic warfare (EW) :

❑ Is any action involving the use of the EM spectrum or directed energy to control
the spectrum, attack an enemy, or impede enemy assaults.

❑ Its purpose :

o the use of electromagnetic spectrum to determine, exploit, reduce and

o prevent the hostile use of electromagnetic spectrum as well as action which

retains friendly use of electromagnetic spectrum.

4
INTRODUCTION

 Military operations are executed in an information environment conducted

by the electromagnetic spectrum.

 The electromagnetic spectrum portion of the information environment is

referred to as the electromagnetic environment (EME).

 The use of the electromagnetic environment creates vulnerabilities and

opportunities for electronic warfare in support of military operations.

 EW is an element of offensive and defensive counterinformation.

5
ELECTRONIC WARFARE STRUCTURE AND UNITS

1. Electronic Support Measures (ESM)

 It involves actions taken to search for , intercept, locate, record and analyze
radiated electromagnetic energy, for the purpose of exploiting such
radiations to support military operations.

 ESM is an important source of EW information to carry out electronic

countermeasures and electronic, counter- countermeasures.

6
ELECTRONIC WARFARE STRUCTURE AND UNITS

2. Electronic Countermeasures (ECM)

 Electronic Countermeasures are the actions taken to prevent or reduce

the enemy's effective use of the electromagnetic spectrum.

 Two major actions of ECM are jamming and deception.

7
ELECTRONIC WARFARE STRUCTURE AND UNITS

3. Jamming

 The deliberate radiation, re-radiation, or reflection of electromagnetic

energy to impair the use of electronic devices, equipment or systems.

8

4. Deception

 The deliberate radiation, re-radiation, alteration, absorption, or reflection of

electromagnetic energy in a manner intended to mislead the enemy in the
interpretation or use of information received by his electronic systems is called
deception.

9
ELECTRONIC WARFARE STRUCTURE AND UNITS

5. Manipulative
 The alteration or simulation of friendly electromagnetic radiations to accomplish
deception.
6. Imitative

 Introducing radiation into enemy channels which imitates his own emission.

10
ELECTRONIC WARFARE STRUCTURE AND UNITS

7. Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM)

 The actions taken to ensure friendly, effective, use of the electromagnetic

spectrum despite the enemy's use of EW.

 The field of EW is discussed in terms of active and passive roles.

Passive EW Active EW

- Search and analyze of - the radiation of EM energy

electromagnetic radiation to impair the enemy's use
- Determine the existence , of electronic system,
source and pertinent - to mislead the enemy in
characteristics of the the interpretation of data
enemy's use of the ES. received from his electronic
systems.

TASKS and MISSIONS

• Jamming some designated equipment; • Full network suppression;

• Suppression of some networks; • Blocking all communication;
• Sending SMS to the enemy soldiers; • Enforce to use GSM or SATCOM
• Interference in specific areas. or mobile Internet;
• Determine access points for GSM 13
and mobile Internet.

PECULIARITIES of EW EMPLOYMENT by RUSSIAN FORCES

hidden influence of radio-electronic warfare means on radio communication (sudden

disappearance of radio communication due to unknown reasons);

sending SMS messages to private phones of the military with the indication of places
for their gathering, in fact, places for planned fire shooting;

blocking GSM radio communication with its further restoration, defining the points of
access and shooting the areas of mass access to GSM radio communication;

using the capabilities of radio-electronic warfare means for spotting the places of the
location of counterbattery radars with further shooting on them;

use of new physical principles, the effect of application equals electromagnetic

weapons which destroy electronic equipment. 14

CONCLUSION

❑ Determining the existence of the enemy's electronic aids to warfare

❑ Destroying the effectiveness of the enemy's electronic aids to warfare

❑ Denying the destruction or degradation of the effectiveness of friendly

electronic aids to the warfare.

❑ Interfere with the enemy's use of electromagnetic spectrum in such a way as

to render its use either ineffective, degrading or even dangerous for him

❑ Defend one's own friendly use of the electromagnetic spectrum.
