Hasta Nakshatra
The Hand
Star: Gamma Virginis or Delta Virginis Deity: Sūrya (Savitṛ - one of 12 Adityas)
Myth
The Sun before sunrise is called Savitṛ, and after sunrise until sunset it is called Sūrya (the
Sun). Savitṛ is the deity associated with the Hasta nakshatra.
Savitṛ is unambiguously identified with Bhaga (fortune). This
is the solar deity that inspires you to start your day. Typically,
when you get up, you face East (the direction where the Sun/
Sūrya rises), put your palms (hands) together and invoke
Savitṛ (the Sun God) by reciting the Gāyatrī Mantra:
With the blessing of the Gāyatrī Mantra the Hasta native attempts to free themself from the
deceptions of maya (illusion). At this stage, after the necessary pursuits of Pūrva Phalgūnī
and Uttara Phalgūnī, Hasta is the nakṣatra that facilitates the native to bring ancient wisdom
to earth and explain it in laymen’s terms. This nakṣatra is ruled by the Moon (manas) and
resides in the sign of Mercury (intelligence); therefore, Hasta natives have robust mental
strength, be able to get a lot done (reach their goals), have great dexterity in their hands (arts
and crafts), and most importantly, their ability to craft words is powerful (especially if they
align their motives are noble). Because of their high mental powers, they must be careful not
to be too clever and become ‘tricksters’ (deceive others).
