Lesson 4. Mathematics as a Language

Highlights

A. Describe the rhetoric of the mathematical language.

- Mathematics is a powerful language which can be used in many things, like
many machines and things we used to today, like roads with architectures
and computers algorithms.

B. What are the characteristics of the mathematical language? Enumerate and

describe each.
1. Comprehensive – As it says, Math is comprehensive due to it comprising of
many different things like numbers, symbols, operations, and such.
2. Concise – In simple terms, Math is direct and always straight to the point all
the while not giving out unnecessary information that may make it less
understandable for people.
FIRST QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 2

3. Precise – As a language being systematic, it uses its symbols and numbers in

determining accurate answers without fail.
4. Powerful – Math can be used on anything, even in things it wasn’t expected
to be in. Many fields of study have or have been applied itself with
Mathematics.
5. Non-Temporal – Math is the same it is ever since it started.

C. What are the parts of speech of the mathematical language?

1. Noun (numbers)
2. Pronouns (variables)
3. Verbs (relation symbols)
4. connectives (operations)
5. Punctuations (grouping symbols)

D. Give three examples of each of the following: (i) mathematical expression, (ii)
mathematical sentence
1. Mathematical expressions
- 6y+2
- 16-5y
- 5+10
2. Mathematical sentence
- 8+8=16
- 9*2=18
- (9+3)*2=24

Lesson 5. Sets, Relations and Functions

Highlights

A. What is a set?
- A collection of things, it may contain numbers, elements, etc.
FIRST QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 2

B. Let A and B be subsets of a universal set U. Give the theoretical definition of the
following:
1. Union of A and B = A set in which it contains all elements of A and B due to
the union without any repetition of the elements.
2. Intersection of A and B = A set in U which contains A and B and possible
repetitions.
3. Complement of A = A set in which set A might contain elements present in
the universal set U but not in set A.
4. A – B = A set where it may contain elements that are in A but not in B.
5. B – A = A set where it may contain elements that are in B but not in A.
6. A x B = It is a set where elements of both sets are present in an ordered
pair, the first from set A and the second from the set B.

C. What is a function?
- Where one set and another have their elements assigned by rule.

D. What are the ways of writing a function?

1. Set notations
2. Tabular forms
3. Mapping diagrams
4. Formulas

Answer Week 2A HW

Lesson 6. Binary Operations

Highlights

A. What is a binary operation?

- From the word ‘binary’, it takes two elements from a set and gives a unique
result present to the same set.
FIRST QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 2

B. What are the properties of a binary operation? Enumerate and explain each.
1. Closure Property – disables the possibility of obtaining a value that does
not belong to a set.
2. Commutative Property – The value will still remain the same regardless of
the order of the operation.
3. Associative Property – A property that guarantees no change in value
regardless of operation groupings.
4. Identity Property – Is where an unique element, (e), is assigned a value
that differs depending on the binary operation
5. Inverse Property - If an operation on a set satisfies an expression, then
all elements in an operation on the other side is invertible.
