MASTER ME
MELC: Illustrates a circle and the terms related to it: radius, diameter chord, center,
arc, chord, central angle, and inscribed angle.
OBJECTIVES: After answering this activity sheet, students will be able to:
1. identify and describe the radius, diameter chord, and center, arc, chord,
central angle, and inscribed angle;
2. sketch a circle with its parts correctly labeled; and
3. appreciate the value of circles to real-life situations.

A circle is the set of all points that are the same distance from a fixed point.
This fixed point is called the center of the circle where all radii meet.
A radius is a segment drawn from any point on the circle to the center.
A diameter is a segment that passes through the center of a circle.
A chord is a segment that connects any two points of a circle.
The diameter is the longest chord of a circle and it is twice the length
of a circle’s radius.

An arc is a portion of a circle determined by an angle and named

using 2 capital letters for the endpoints under a curved line, for minor arc;
and 3 capital letters for the endpoints under a curved line, for major arc.
If the arc is less than 180°, then it is a minor; if it is equal to 180°,
then it is a semicircle; and if it is greater than 1800, then it is a major arc.

A central angle is an angle whose vertex is at the center,

and whose sides intersect the circle at two points. An angle
whose vertex is on the circle and whose sides are chords
is an inscribed angle.
