HAND TOOLS / ELECTRICAL HAND TOOLS SAFETY

1 Purpose

1.1 To ensure the safety of the staff who requires using hand tools &
electrical hand tools during the course of work.

2 Definition

Nil

3 Responsibility

3.1 All persons who use any hand tools / electrical hand tools are to perform
visual check prior to usage.

3.2 Any person who spots any defective hand tools / electrical hand tools is to
immediately report to his / her superior and secure such tools to prevent
inadvertent use.

4. General Guideline

4.1 Hand tools should be of materials of good quality and appropriate for the
work for which they will be used.

4.2 Hand tools should only be tempered dressed and repaired by competent
persons.

4.3 Heads of hammers, wedges and other shock tools should be dressed or
ground to a suitable radius on the edge as soon as they begin to
mushroom or crack.

4.4 Unless adequately protected, sharp-edges and sharp-pointed tools must


not be carried in pockets.

4.5 When not in use, sharp tools should be kept in sheaths, shields, chests or
other suitable containers.

4.6 Hand tools must be used only for the specific purposes for which they
were designed. Do not misuse any hand tools assigned to you.

4.7 Use segmented knife only when using it for cutting simple and soft
materials such as paper, carton, strings, ropes, etc. For other materials
such as wood, metals, plastic, etc. use proper tools such as chisel, file,
grinding machine, saw, etc.

4.8 Hand tools must not be left lying in places, where persons have to work
or pass or on scaffolds or other elevations from which they might fall on
persons below.

4.9 Only insulated or non-conducting tools should be used on or near live


electrical installation if there is any risk of electric shock.

4.10 Electric hand tools must be grounded or double insulated.

4.11 Approved rubber cable shall be used for all portable electrical tools.

4.12 Cracked or damaged grinding disks shall not be used.

4.13 Adjustment or repair shall only be made after disconnection of power.

4.14 Tools must be inspected regularly and certified that they are in safe
operating condition by designated personnel before use.

4.15 Defective tools must not be used. It shall be tagged and removed for
repair immediately.

4.16 No modification to machinery, tools or equipment shall be made unless


otherwise approved by the manufacturer. Modifications shall not in any
manner reduce the original safety provision and margin.

4.17 Gloves or loose clothing shall not be worn where it may get entangle
while using electrical hand tools.
