What is this mod about?
This is the 6th iteration of Thaumcraft from Azanor. The Thaumcraft mods for Minecraft have
been a favourite in the modding scene, and Thaumcraft 6 is still one of the most interesting
and entertaining magic mods.

Thaumaturgy is the capability of a magician to work miracles. A practitioner of Thaumaturgy
is a “Thaumaturge”, “Thaumaturgist” or miracle worker.
Thaumcraft 6 is all about drawing magic from physical objects in the form of Essentia and
from the environment in the form of Vis and reshaping it to perform miracles.

World Generation
Magical Forest Biome
Thaumcraft adds a new biome to the world Magical Forest. You can’t miss this luminous
green biome. Within the Magical Forest there are higher concentrations of vis (great place to
set up a base). You will also find vis mushrooms, greatwood trees and silverwood trees.
Within the forest you will also find pechs (pronounced “pecks”). These creatures are neutral
and will not bother you, but they will pick up items you have dropped. You can also trade with
them if you give them enough items containing Desiderium.

After you have thrown the pechs enough items containing Desiderium, you can right click
them and add items containing Desiderium in the left most slot. By clicking the die in the
middle you might get something in return.
Silverwood Trees
Silverwood trees grow throughout the world and can be easily recognized by their distinct
light blue leaves and white logs. These trees normally have shimmerleaf growing by their
roots.
When chopping down these trees you will get silverwood saplings (rare drop). The
silverwood logs can be harvested and converted into silverwood planks . Silverwood trees
may also drop 04 quicksilvers when harvested.
These trees are most often found in Magical Forests but can also be found in most other
biomes except for Tundra and Desert.

Greatwood Trees
Greatwood trees stand very tall with huge trunks and big sprawling clumps of leaves. These
trees can be found in most biomes but do make more appearances in the Magical Forest
biome.
There are also greatwood trees that are covered in spider webs. These trees have a cave
spider spawner below them and also contain a chest with lots of useful goodies under the
spawner:

Shimmerleaf & Cinderpearl
Cinderpearl is a flower that gives off a small glow. It can be found in deserst biomes and can
be converted into blaze powder. Shimmerleaf can be found growing below silverwood trees,
which can be converted into quicksilver.
Vishroom
Vishrooms can be found in magical forests and when walked over will receive a nausea
debuff.
Vishrooms are currently not used for very much.
Crystals
All around the world but mostly underground there are many clumps of colorful crystal
clusters.
There are 6 crystal types, one for each primal aspect. These give off a small glow and when
harvested they will drop primal vis crystals . Researching reveals that these crystals grow in

places where vis is high and will be used to replenish the aura should it drop.
Amber Bearing Stone & Cinnabar Ore
Amber bearing stone and Cinnabar ore can be found deep underground or in mountains.
Breaking Amber bearing stone gives you amber , and rarely, a preserved curiosity . Otherwise
using a pickaxe with silktouch gives you the Amber bearing stone that smelts into amber
which
is also used in many crafting recipes. Cinnabar ore smelts into quicksilver which is also used
in many crafting recipes.
Vis
Vis (pronounced “vee”) is magical energy ambient in the environment. Every chunk has
some level of vis but some have more than others. As you use spells and foci (more on

these can be found in their sections) the vis in the chunk will go down. Vis will slowly build up
again in chunks where it is missing and balance itself with adjacent chunks.
Aspects
In total there are 37 aspects. In the world of Thaumcraft everything is made up of Aspects.
There are 6 Primal Aspects and 31 Compound Aspects. Compound Aspects are made up of
2 or more other Aspects.

Flux & Rifts
Flux is generated when releasing Essentia into the world without filtering it. Flux is sort of a
bad aura around a chunk. Too much flux can cause less vis to generate in the area and can
also lead to rifts . Rifts will destroy any blocks that come in contact with them. Over time
these rifts will decrease the amount of flux in a chunk. After a while these rifts will leave
behind a giant taint seed . These giant taint seeds spread and maintain Taint. This is almost
the only way to obtain Vitium, which is required for Essentia Tubes (even though you can get
vitium from mycelium, nether wart and vishrooms).
Flux rifts generate on the highest block in the corrupted chunk.

These rifts have a chance of having any of the following happen:
● Wisp
○ A Wisp will be spawned in a 10×10×10 area around the rift, with locations
closer to the rift being more likely. The wisp has a 20% chance to be a Vitium
wisp instead of a random one.
● Taint Seed
○ The Flux Rift will disappear, spawning a Giant Taint Seed in a 10×10×10 area
around the rift, with locations closer to the rift being more likely. The seed will
be temporarily boosted, causing it to spread Taint faster, and additional Flux
will be released in the chunk. This event has a weight of 10 and can not occur
in the spread range of any Taint Seeds.
● Flux Phage
○ Flux Phage IV will be inflicted on all mobs and players in a 32×32×32 area for
2 minutes 30 seconds.
● Flux cloud
○ A custom spell will be cast on the nearest player in a 16 block radius around
the rift. The spell is composed of a Cloud focus medium with a random radius
and duration, with the Flux focus effect attached. Despite the rift being the
source of the effect, the spell's caster is the targeted player.
The size of these rifts depends on the amount of flux that has built up in the area.
In order to close rifts you will need a Causality Collapser but for now if you do find one or
create one then I would suggest you move away or kill anything that spawns from it.
You can stabilize rifts with a Stabilizer, but it creates flux.
If there are crystal clusters growing in the fluxed area, there is a chance they can turn into
Flux Crystals. This process consumes a little bit of flux from the aura during this process.

Flux can be evenly distributed between two chunks (maybe even 3) by placing the essentia
smelter directly in the corner of a chunk and putting Auxiliary Venting Ports directly next to
the chunkborder. The Flux will be calculated in the Chunk to the output of the Auxiliary
Venting Port. This helps to let the Flux be minimized per chunk.
Taint
Think of Taint as a virus. Once it starts infecting the world, it will continue to grow and slowly
take over more and more of the world. It will infect creatures and will turn any block into taint.
Taint is spread by Giant Taint Seeds. Once a Giant Taint Seed spawns, the area around it
will quickly become tainted, with most blocks converting to tainted blocks (many modded
blocks are unaffected). When the Giant Taint Seed is killed, the taint will quickly die off. You
can also harvest the tainted dirt or cobblestone, this is an easy way to get Vitium. At this
point, dirt blocks will be restored completely, tainted trees will melt into purple liquid and
evaporate over time and stone/stone type blocks will convert to porous stone , which can be
mined for a wide variety of resources.
Warp
While working your way through Thaumcraft you will notice that some research has a purple
swirl around it. You will also notice that you will be warned that completing a particular
research will give you a little bit of warp.
Warp affects your mind. A little warp is fine and inevitable but over time you may get more
and more warp. This can cause strange visions and can also kill you:

The more warp you get the more insane you go. There is a way to look at how insane you
are but you will have to go a little insane before you find out what you can craft to measure
your sanity.

Getting Started
Prerequisites
Before getting into Thaumcraft you will need to have a few things in place:
● Explored the world
● Have a base of operations
● Bookshelf
● Cauldron
● Glass
● Healthy Supply of:
○ Paper/Sugar Canes
○ Ink
● Collected a few crystals
○ Collect as many as you can and try and find all 6 different types. A stack of
each one is great.
These are the main things you will need to get started. The deeper you dive into Thaumcraft,
the more materials you will require.

Crystals
Unlike previous iterations of Thaumcraft, you will not spawn with a Thaumonomicon. Instead,
you will first have to collect some vis crystals. There is no doubt you have come across these
already around the world:
There are a total of 6 different crystals throughout the world but once you mine your first one
(colour does not matter) a message will appear on your screen:
Head home and sleep. It is recommended you grab more crystals (in a variety of colours),
cinnabar ore and amber bearing stone before heading home.
As soon as you wake up you will see another message as well as receive a book of “Strange
Dreams.” Reading the book will give you more details on what you should do next:
Salis Mundus
Combining flint, redstone, a bowl and any 3 crystals (so long as they’re different types) will
give you salis mundus :

This is a shapeless crafting recipe. You should make a few of these as you will be using this
a lot in the future.
Thaumonomicon
With the salis mundus in hand, rightclick a book shelf and watch it turn into your
Thaumonomicon:
Like many other mods Thaumcraft uses this book as your guide and reference manual.
When opening up the book you will see a tree. This tree will expand as you progress through
the mod and as you read more of the book.
Note: In order to reach certain levels you will need to flick through the pages. Please make
sure you read through any new pages or certain things will not unlock. This book is also like
a quest book where you will need to “complete” quests in order to progress

Please be warned that "item magnet" type items, if fast enough, can prevent the detection
that you actually have the thaumonomicon, this can be fixed by disabling the magnet and
throwing the thaumonomicon onto the ground then picking it up directly instead of with the
magnet:
The First Steps segment of the book explains a little more about salis mundus and will give
you a crafting recipe. It will also advise you on what you should be making next. After
reading the “First Steps” stage you will also unlock new stages which will pop up on the top
right of your screen:
When viewing the “opening page” of the book you will notice that certain steps have
“stages”. This means there are multiple steps to completing the “stage”.

Arcane Workbench
Next up, use salis mundus on a crafting table, this will turn it into an arcane workbench :
The arcane workbench will be used to craft many things in Thaumcraft. It can also be used
as a normal crafting table. The Arcane Workbench functions different from a normal crafting
table in the sense that it will not return items when the UI is closed. This means that only one
person can use it at a time if playing on a server, and can make building more complex
recipes easier or harder depending on how many of the ingredients you have available.
This crafting table is a bit different, as it has 6 spaces around the 3x3 grid which are for
crystals of the corresponding colour and also has a counter above the output slot:

This “141 available” will be different for you, as it is a counter of how much vis is in the
chunk. The amount of vis in the chunk changes depending on where you are in the world (in
a magical forest biome there may be more vis). It naturally regenerates on its’ own, but will
regenerate faster in or near chunks with vis crystals and silverwood trees.
Once the workbench has been made go back into your Thaumonomicon and click
“complete.” Before we skip ahead we need to progress through the Theorycrafting step in
our Thaumonomicon.
Knowledge is split into 2 types:
Observations : We can find out more about what is around us by scanning it (more on that a
little later).
Theories : Understanding the world through thought and practical experimentation.
In order to get these theories to advance our knowledge we will need a research table and
scribing tools. The recipe of both of these can be found in your Thaumonomicon under
“Theorycrafting”. It’s a good idea to make 2 scribing tools and also to have a stack of paper
on you. Just like in previous versions of Thaumcraft, sometimes you will come up with
theories while doing random things.
Observations
You will notice that in order to progress deeper into the Thaumonomicon you will need
“Observation: Fundamentals”. In order to complete it, we will need the Thaumometer . Under
“First Steps” you can find the crafting recipe.

Thaumometer
You will need one of each crystal and I would recommend making two Thaumometers. You
can sneakclick the crystals into the arcane workbench. You will also notice that it will cost
vis to make:
While holding the thaumometer in your hand you will notice blueish sparkles coming off of
items in the world. These represent things you have not learned about yet:
To scan items, rightclick them while holding the thaumometer. Some items such as crafting
tables and chests you will need to shift rightclick.
You can scan most things, even blocks with inventories such as furnaces and chests. When
you scan items such as chests you will also scan the items INSIDE the chest or inventory.

When you scan something that you have not scanned before, a message will pop up saying
“You have learned something new,” but if you have scanned it in the past, it will just say
“Nothing new can be learned from this”. Later if you have paper and scribing tools, you can
also scan the sun, each quadrant of the sky, and the moon once per day. This is a good
source of Tenebrae later on.
If you are using the Thaumic Inventory scanning mod as suggested, you can open your
inventory, pick up the thaumometer and then hover the thaumometer over items in your
inventory and it will scan these items. This saves dropping them on the floor. You should also
scan the spare thaumometer and your Thaumonomicon.
It's also a good idea to scan items such as scribing tools and salis mundus. You will
eventually unlock Observation: Fundamentals and a few other things. Once you have done
this go into your Thaumonomicon and complete the next stage of First Steps.
Make sure you scan as much as possible. Not all mod blocks will be scannable, but most
mobs and vanilla blocks will be. You can also see the amount of vis in the chunk with the
thaumometer in the top left corner of the screen when holding it in your hand.
Make sure you scan the crystals in caves, as this will give you a new stage on the first page.
Beginning now, scan every new item you craft, especially if it is from Thaumcraft.
Celestial Observation
Before you go any deeper into alchemy you should dive into Celestial Observation. This will
come in handy when doing research. While scanning, you should unlock its requirements
fairly quickly. If not, keep scanning and do a little research. Check after completing a theory:

Once completed you will be able to start scanning the moon and the sun as well as each
quadrant of the night sky (make sure you have paper and scribing tools in your inventory).
This can be done once per night. Each time you will get 1 of 14 pages (13 for the night and
one for the day).
Keep scanning and collecting these pages, as they are a good source of Tenebrae and can
help with theorycrafting
You should also scan mobs, especially the zombie with red eyes. These are angry zombies
and are part of Thaumcraft. Scanning them will unlock a stage asking you to get a zombie
brain. Scan the brain as soon as you get one.
Theories/Research
Place down your table and then rightclick it with one of the scribing tools in hand (this will
use up the scribing tools but will put them in the top left of the table). Your scribing tools will
not last forever and will run out of ink. Although, they can be repaired/refilled by combining

them with an ink sac. Rightclick the table again to open it. This table has a slot on the top
right corner for paper that you should keep full when possible:
You will also notice a bookshelf in the middle. This is because the research table is next to a
bookcase. The table will detect helpful blocks that are up to 4 blocks away. There are also 5
light bulbs these are called “inspiration”. As you progress through the mod you will gain
more and more ideas. There are also other items that will give you extra research options
such as:
● Bookshelf Gives more “Fundamentals” options
● Crucible Gives more “Alchemy” options
● Runic Matrix Gives more “Infusion” options
● Golem Press Gives more “Golemancy” options
● Brain in a Jar gives more “Eldritch” options
● Beacon Gives more “Auromancy” options
● Focal Manipulator Gives more “Auromancy” options
● Enchanting Table Gives options which use levels for research
Each time you use one of these bonus items (click it and then press “create theory”) it will
use up one of your Inspiration but will help to focus your research on a given field.

The highest field or fields, depending on the different papers you come up with, will be at
100% experience gained. The lower ones will be on a 33% reduction (hence the 0 next to
the Fundamentals).
Clicking on the next page with a question mark will bring up 2 pages and will give you an

Your research may differ.
With some of these pages there is a cost (this cost being ideas/lightbulbs). Others may not
have any cost, but they can still affect your experience progress. You might also notice that
your highest field may change.
‘Rethink’ pages will give you extra inspiration. This is almost always beneficial unless you
are finding yourself unable to complete some research tasks. Some tasks require you to
have certain items in your inventory, some require having that item and completing that task
will consume the item (Shown with an exclamation mark). Some tasks consume EXP, and
others still consume current research. Always read carefully before choosing a selection.

You can cancel the theory at any time, even at the last stage you can just mine up the table
(all XP in each Category will be lost).
There will be some pages that have an item on the page with an orange exclamation mark
next to it. This means that there is a requirement for that item and it will consumed with that
theory completion. If there is just an image of an item then you will just need to have it in
your inventory and it will not be consumed.
You can now navigate to the Theorycrafting section of your Thaumonomicon and complete
the stage. You will need to craft the items that are required as cheating them in will not
complete them..

When using the Bookcase for Research, you will notice that a lightbulb will be removed and

○ If you have Quarries going then you will find these in your system, they have
a small chance from dropping from Amber ore
● Pech Wand/Illuminating Curiosity
○ These can be traded very rarely from Pech (mages have the wands), gold
would be your best resource to trade.

If your Crucible is close enough to your research table you will get another icon on the table
giving you more bonus research:
The Crucible will allow you to insert items, break them down to their aspects and will allow
you to combine them to make new items. This is a very crude way to making items because
any extra aspects will be released into the air causing FLUX. The more flux you have in the
air, the higher chance you have of causing Taint, and Taint is not good.
In order for the Crucible to work it will need to be filled with water and have a heat source
below it. You can use fire, lava, magma, or later nitor. To insert items into the crucible you
can either drop them in or rightclick them onto the Crucible while in hand. Later, using
Goggles of Revealing will give you the ability to tell which aspects are currently in the
crucible. Be careful not to right click the water with an item as you will lose it.
PLEASE ENSURE THE CRUCIBLE IS IN A SAFE AREA. ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN AND
ITEMS WILL BE LOST IN THE CRUCIBLE.

Once water is placed into the Crucible, the water will take a few seconds to boil and then you
know it is ready for items to be inserted.
Complete the next step of the Discovering Alchemy stage in your Thaumonomicon. Once
completed, you will be given more information about Alchemy and how to create Yellow
Nitor.
To create Yellow Nitor you will first need to fill the Crucible, then you will need to add in the
following aspects:
● 10 Ignis
● 10 Lux
● 10 Potentia
Once these are in the crucible we will need to add in 1 Glowstone Dust. The best way to
create this is with:
● 2 x Torch
● 1 x Redstone
● 2 x Blaze Powder
Alternative:
● 2x torch + 1x coal/charcoal (some versions of Thaumcraft 6 do not have aspects on
coal)
Once these have been put into the Crucible, you will notice different coloured bubbles
appearing. This means that there are Aspects in the Crucible (always check your Crucible).
Next, you can right click with your Glowstone Dust. A big puff of smoke will appear and you
will be given one Yellow Nitor.

In the beginning of Alchemy it is difficult to add in the exact amount of Aspects needed per
item. In the above case we added in extras:
● Bestia (from torches)
● Potentia and Alkimia (from Blaze Powder)
These extra aspects will still be left in the Crucible even after crafting the Yellow Nitor. You
can see this by looking into the Crucible and seeing colourful clouds. This will slowly in time
dissolve into the world and cause small amounts of flux. You can also sneakrightclick the
Crucible to remove this manually but it will release all the flux into the air at once.
You can see how much flux was let loose by using your Thaumometer and look at the top left
of the screen:
This small dark sliver is flux entering into the local area.
You can also extract some of the remaining Essences by rightclicking the Cauldron with
Quartz Slivers (Nether Quartz in a crafting grid).

These will turn into Vis Crystals of whatever essences are in the Crucible:
Nether Quartz Slivers can be used to soak up most leftover aspects. For each sliver, 2
Essentia will be removed from the crucible in return for one Vis Crystal of that aspect. As it
takes 2 Essentia, this is best done with even numbers of Essentia and is safer than letting it
turn into flux.
If you do have a build up of flux, you might have to move your base, depending on how
much has built up. Flux will dissipate into surrounding chunks so be careful how much is
around. Scanning this flux will also unlock the Flux Section.
You can complete this section, however, this guide will cover more on Flux later.
Yellow Nitor can be placed in the world as a cool light source, and when put under your
Crucible it will heat up the water. It is also used in a few crafting recipes.

Since we now have access to the Alchemy tab, it’s a good idea to start some very basic
Alchemy so we can advance the first section of the Thaumonomicon.
Alchemical Metallurgy Basics
Under the Alchemy Tab, you need to look in Alchemical Metallurgy to unlock Artifice.
Under Alchemical Metallurgy you will be given a Recipe for Alchemical Brass Ingots. These
are simple to create. All they need is 5 Instrumentum and then add an iron ingot into the
Crucible. This can be done easily with a stone Shovel. Once you have made your first ingot
you can complete the section and leave the next section, as there are 5 parts to Alchemical
Metallurgy in total. You just need to make one ingot and can leave the rest for later.
Discovering Artifice
Now that you have done some basic Alchemy, you can work on unlocking Artifice. For this
you will need to have done some scanning, and if you are still missing the 2 Essences
Sensus and Machina, then you can scan a wooden pressure plate:

Weighted Pressure Plate (made from gold) if you have spare gold.

craft the Goggles of Revealing which give you a little bit of a Vis discount when crafting, but
also lets you see the aspects inside your Crucible:

unlocked it, you will need to travel to the deepest part of your world (Around Y level 10) and
the highest part (above Y 100).

Basics Completed
With the basic Thaumcraft research completed, you now know how to research, how
scanning and basic crafting works and you will have unlocked all the tabs in the
Thaumonomicon. Now it's time to choose what tab (Auromancy, Alchemy, Artifice, Arcane
Infusion or Golemancy) you wish to look into to further.
Each Section has its own benefits:
● Auromancy
○ Using the Focal Manipulator to create custom spells known as foci which can
be deployed using the Caster’s Gauntlet.
● Alchemy
○ Creating and manipulating Essentia via the Crucible, and other apparati, to
make various magical or mundane materials.
● Artifice
○ Similar to infusion, but with less magical items, and which are crafted rather
than infused; tends to be concerned with mechanical items.
● Arcane Infusion
○ Using an Infusion Altar to create advanced magical equipment from materials
and essentia.
● Golemancy
○ Creating highly customizable golems in a Golem Press to perform menial
tasks or to automate certain procedures.
Fundamentals
When you first start Thaumcraft this will be your starting tab, finishing this will unlock all the

Flux out of the air and turn it into Vitium.

You will need to place down 5 Jars in a cross pattern and on top of the middle jar you can
place the condenser and on top of the condenser you have to place at least 1 Lattiace.
There are a few rules with the lattice as stated in the Book:
“The lattice cannot be attached any old way however:
1) The lattice blocks must be attached to the top of the condenser and all the connected
lattice pieces must be above the condenser itself.
2) I can attach many lattice blocks together, but any lattice pieces further than 8 blocks from
the condenser will automatically detach.
3) It is theoretically possibly to pack a large amount of lattice pieces into this 8 block range,
but the benefit a lattice piece provides is reduced for each other lattice piece it is connected
to.
4) It may appear that a single unbroken line of lattices would be the best configuration, but
occasionally the filter in a lattice piece becomes clogged and unusable. All lattice pieces
after the clogged one will no longer aid the conversion speed, though they will still add to the
cost. The filter can be replaced by clicking on the clogged lattice piece with a fresh one.”

with a Essentia Filter when it gets blocked:

Closing Flux Rifts/Primordial Pearls
Now that you have scanned rifts you are probably wondering how to close these to stop
them from getting out of control. Luckily there is a way but the infusion recipe has Very High
Instability, the basic idea behind this is to blow the rift up so it closes:
Crafting these and throwing them into a rift will cause it to close very quickly but the rift will
also drop Void Seeds:
Scan these and collect them, these will be used later on. Rifts also have a chance of
Dropping Primordial Pearls but this chance is very low, there is about a 1 in 6 chance one
could drop from a very large rift. These pearls have a durability of 9 and can not be repaired,
they do not stack but are very much needed later on.
Eldritch Guardian
With high levels of warp come some strange debuffs, the guardia will spawn randomly and to
unlock this research you will just need to scan him. They are not too tough and don't really
drop anything, these are more annoying than anything else.

Thaumic Slime
The Thaumic Slime has similar parameters to its mundane counterpart: it moves, attacks
and dies the same way, splitting into smaller ones. The only difference is that smaller slimes
can stick together to form bigger slime again. When done so, the max health of the bigger
slime will be the sum of the max health of the 2 smaller slimes that formed it. The damage
will also grow the same way. The limit is 100 HP and 100 damage. The slimes of maximum
size can be grown by any autospawning machine, they will stick together in one as long as
the resulting slime stays in the spawn area. Note that the fully grown slime will still eat the
smaller ones, even though it cannot grow bigger anymore.

This mob floats in midair just like Bat and attacks player with lightning bolts from a small
distance. They can be found in the nether and around Taint. Scan these to unlock this
research:

Basic Auromancy
This section has three parts to it. The first part will require you to craft a Blank Lesser Focus.
To do this, you need to add the following aspects to a Crucible:
● 5 Auram
● 10 Praecantatio
● 20 Vitreus
Once this is done, add an Ordo Vis Crystal to the Crucible.
The easiest way to add these aspects is to first make Arcane Stone in your Arcane
Workbench (make around 18). This can then be crafted into Arcane Stone Slabs, which then
can be crafted into an Arcane Pedestal:

Note that this recipe does not require any crystals or Vis, and can therefore be crafted in a
regular crafting table. Any crystal can be used to craft these stones, so this is a perfect
recipe for getting rid of excess crystals you don’t want to smelt down.
Two Arcane Pedestals will give you the 10 Praecantatio. For the 5 Auram, you can use
Silverwood Planks or a Silverwood Log. Four glass can be used for the 20 Vitreus you need.
For the Catalyst, you need an Ordo shard. You can get this by throwing lead into a Crucible
and right clicking it with Quartz Slivers (Essence might be left over so you can safely
sneakrightclick this).

Focal Manipulator
The Focal Manipulator allows you to craft a Focus that you can use with your Caster’s
Gauntlet. If you put it in your offhand, you will see icons on the top left of your screen. The
big circle is the Focus you currently have equipped (none at the moment), and the bar is how
much Vis is in the area (each chunk has a different amount of Vis).
You have already crafted a Blank Lesser Focus. You can use the Focal Manipulator to add
some effects. If you put the Lesser Focus into the Focal Manipulator you will see a few
options:
Just like an Enchanting Table, you can rename this focus at the top. On the right you can see
the total complexity (0/15), the XP cost (vanilla experience) and the Vis cost. If yours looks
different, try removing the focus and inserting it again.
On the left you can see two icons: Touch and Fire. You can add these to the Focus by
clicking them:

In this example, when you touch something it will be set on fire. You can edit the duration
and the power of the flame. With Touch there are no options. The longer the duration, and
the higher you set the power, the more this will cost, and the higher the complexity will be. If
the complexity is too high, you will not be able to craft this Focus. You have to balance this
out.
Note: If you set the Burn Duration to 0 it will not set things or mobs on fire.
You will also see Vis per cast. This Focus will cost 0.8 Vis to cast and casting it too much
might drain the area of Vis. There is also a Crystal requirement to craft it.
Though you may be tempted to make a Touch focus, a Bolt focus will serve you much better
if you have the patience for it.
Once crafted, put the Focus into your inventory and press and hold F (or the appropriate key
binding). This allows you to select what Focus you would like to put into your Gauntlet.
Sneak + F will remove the focus.

Focus Pouch
You should have done enough scanning and research by now to unlock the Focus Pouch
and complete this quest.
The Pouch is very simple to craft and is very handy for storing Foci, but can be left for later if
you find yourself only using one or two as it has a high leather cost.
You can put this into your belt slot under your baubles equipment (open your inventory, press
the circle next to your character). The Pouch will automatically put your Foci into it when you
unequip them (sneak + F), and will let you select any you have. This means you don't have
to clog up your inventory with foci:

Recharge Pedestal
You should have enough research to complete this quest. If not, use the research table with
the Focal Manipulator bonus. You can craft one now or later as you need, as it’s currently not
very useful.
Vis Battery
This research will appear after you have scanned naturally appearing vis crystals and after
scanning Vis crystals among other Thaumcraft ores. This may pop up later on in your
thaumcraft journey.
These batteries will slowly store vis (up to 10) and in turn that vis can be released in the local
arua by applying a redstone signal. This can be handy for when the aura is low and you
need a boost for charing up items or crafting.
The cube will slowly go more and more blue as more and more vis is stored in the battery:
Workbench Charger
You might need to do a little more research for this, but once you have completed the quest,
you can craft the Workbench Charger: (This requires 200 vis to craft. You may need to find a

Elemental Effects
This stage should be no issue if you have scanned a snow golem. Completing this will give
you more options when configuring your Foci. Up to now you have only had fire, but with this
completed you unlock three more elements for use:
● Air
○ Will knock things back and cause a small amount of damage.
● Earth
○ Will break blocks and cause a large amount of damage.
● Frost
○ Slow 3 effect on mobs and does medium damage.
With Earth and Air you can only set the power (setting the power to low will let you spam this
ability more).
Focus Effect: Flux
Unlocking this enables you to do magical damage to mobs (hostile or not). This type of
damage bypasses armor.
Focus Effect: Exchange
The exchange effect replaces blocks with other blocks that are in your inventory. By
sneakclicking the target block (granite, for example), and then clicking other blocks (such as
stone), you will replace the stone with granite and put Cobblestone into your inventory. This
will work only if you have enough blocks in your inventory:

Focus Effect: Rift
Adding this effect will create a “Rift.” Think of this as a hole that you can walk through. For
example, why use a door when you can make a Rift and walk right through the wall, or fire it
at the feet of your enemies and watch them fall to their death.
You can also set the duration and how deep the rift is:

Vis Amulet
This amulet, once equipped, will charge your items with Vis (only items that can also be
charged in the Pedestal). This is an alternative to the recharge Pedestal. This research
requires you to visit the infusion tab so it will be locked.
Focus Medium: Projectiles
Casting spells is fun, but you can spice things up a little. No need to get up close and
personal when you can fire projectiles at mobs.
This research will require you to scan something with Motus. This can be done by scanning
a trap door. After doing some more research, you can complete the quest.
The next part to this requires you to be hit by 3 different types of projectile:

○ Place a firecharge in a dispenser and fire it at yourself (or let a Blaze shoot
you).
● Sticky Projectile
○ Find a llama, hit it and let it spit at you. They spawn in Savannah and
Mountain biomes.
Once you have done this you can complete this section. Now, in your Focal Manipulator, you
will have a new option: Projectile. Combine this with an element (fire, earth, etc.) to throw
things at enemies:
The Projectile option has four different modes:
● None
○ Point and click and your projectile will go in that direction.
● Bouncy
○ The projectile will bounce off solid blocks.
● Seek Hostile
○ Projectiles will seek hostile mobs.
● Seek Friendly

The last two are a bit iffy, and depending on how slow you set them, will determine if they
actively seek the mob. You need to shoot towards the mob for it to actively seek, as it will
kick in when the projectile is on a downward path.
Focus Medium: Bolt
The research for this is very simple and you should have no problem completing this. The
Bolt option is a mixture between the Projectiles and the Touch options for Foci. Unlike
Projectile, it does not have any options in the Focal Manipulator, but it does have a great
range (16).
Combining this with any element allows you to fire bolts of magical energy at your foes!

Focus Medium: Arcane Mine
This next stage will require more research, a tripwire and Vinculum. If you have not scanned
Vinculum yet, then scan a door or a gate.
Just like Projectile or Bolt, this will be your first modifier. You can set the target type to either
friendly or hostile. When combined with an element like fire or earth, it will allow you to throw
down mines that will explode when friendly (or unfriendly) mobs walk over them. When
mines explode, the AOE effect will damage any mobs nearby (including mobs not targeted
by the mine).

drop them down.
Focus Medium: Cloud
This research is normally hidden and will unlock after you scan dragon’s breath or a lingering
potion cloud
Focus Modifier: Scatter
Now you can lay mines and shoot lightning (amongst other things). The scatter modifier will
split trajectories into multiple, random trajectories. Meaning you can shoot lighting and have
it split off a few times.
In the Focal Manipulator you can set the scatter in the top of the list (scroll down on the left,
it's right at the bottom). You can then set the number of forks and the area it will affect in a
cone shape in front of you. For best results, set it to 1030%.

element (such as earth). With mine, you can pump up the angle to 360 and the number of
projectiles to 10.

The Split modifier will unlock two new modifiers for you to add to a Focus. The first will allow
you to hit your target with two effects such as Projectile and Bolt. Then, two elements can be

Now you may be thinking that you can start crafting with this straight away, but there are a
few things you will need to know about before attempting anything. There are a few other
requirements and some fun little mechanics involved.
● Instability
○ Instability can occur while you are crafting. Each infusion can take anywhere
from one to several minutes, and instability can lead to the infusion failing,
lightning striking or flux to generate. To reduce the instability, you need to
ensure that your Altar is symmetrical.

● The longer the infusion goes on, the worse these effects get.
Since each infusion requires components outside of the Altar, you need to put 8 (it can be 6,
which is symmetrically better for some recipes) Arcane Pedestals around the Altar, two
blocks away from it:
Placing the items that you need for Infusion crafting in a symmetric location will reduce
instability.
Place “occult” things such as candles and mob skulls around the altar (symmetrically) to
reduce instability. More than a total of 12 “occult” items will cause instability
Jars of Essentia (easily crafted in the Arcane Workbench with Glass Panes and Slabs)
Each craft will also need Essentia. This is why you will need Essentia near the Altar (the
amount of jars depends on what you are infusing). They can’t be too far or close to the Altar
(12 blocks away from the altar is the max distance). Having your Jars all around the altar
would be easiest, so you can see what you have and what you need.

To craft the Advanced Focus, you need to place a Blank Lesser Focus in the middle of the
Altar and then place the following around the altar on the other pedestals:
● 2 Quicksilver
● 1 Ender Pearl
● 1 Diamond
When looking up the recipe for crafting this focus you will notice at the bottom of the page it
will warn you that this has Minor instability. You do not have to go to crazy about balancing
your altar for this craft, as long as it is symmetrical (see above picture) then it should be fine,
the alter may become a little unstable but the process is fairly quick and should not stop.
As you craft different items in the alter this instability can be higher (Crafting the Vis Amulet
has high instability) and lower, just be sure to check this before crafting and take
precautions.

Alchemy
You did some very simple Alchemy at the beginning of this guide. This is a deeper look into
alchemy and how you can benefit from it. You have already unlocked Basic Alchemy and
unlocked the first part of Alchemical Metallurgy.
This guide has covered making Vis Crystals via the Quartz Sliver and Crucible. It has also
covered Nitor (this can also be made into different colours by combining it with Dyes in a
crafting table). You have crafted Glass Phials to make your scribing tools.
Hedge Alchemy / Alumentum
To complete this section you need 1 Magic Tallow. Throw an item that contains 1 Ignis into
the Crucible, and then add 1 rotten flesh to get 1 Magic Tallow.
You will want to unlock the Alumentum section. This can be completed if you have the
research. Alumentum lasts 3 times longer than coal.
The easier way to make Alumentum and to avoid a huge amount of Flux entering the area is:
● 2 Coal
● 2 Redstone
● 2 Gunpowder
Then using 4 charcoal as the catalyst, you will get 4 Alumentum. You can then use 2 Quartz
Slivers to extract the 4 remaining Alkimia. This would eliminate any risk of flux getting into
the area.
To get Magic Tallow and Alumentum, you can use 4 coal and 2 gunpowder. Then use
charcoal as the catalyst. Then throw in 16 rotten flesh (one at a time as a catalyst) to get out
Magic Tallow. You might run out of water but you can top up the cauldron. This should give
you 20 Magic Tallow. You can then use Slivers to get out the 5 remaining Alkimia.
Make sure you add the charcoal FIRST. Even when the Crucible is empty there will still be
essences in it, just add water.
Ensure you are wearing your Goggles of Revealing !
Once you have crafted your Tallow you can complete the Hedge Alchemy section.
The next stage of Hedge Alchemy will explain about Tallow Candles. These will come in
handy later on, but it will also show you how to make items such as gunpowder and slime
balls by putting in certain Essences into the crucible. It will also tell you how to convert rotten
flesh into leather.

Add one of these to the crucible and add one more to get two back. Complete this part and

Essences and items in the Crucible.
You will also need to create these items in the Crucible. The easiest and safest way (with
minimal flux) way to do this is:

The Easiest way to craft this in your crucible is to craft two, but this will give you 1 flux. You
can use the following to craft 2 urns:
● 6 Water Bottles
● 20 Cobblestone Slabs
● 1 Crafting Bench
Adding these to the Crucible, then two flower pots will give you 2 Urns and 9 Herba left in the
Crucible. Sliver as much out as you can and then release the remaining one as flux.
The Everfull Urn is a great tool when doing lots of Alchemy as it will fill up your crucible. You
can have it up to two blocks away from your crucible, on the same level. This should keep
your Crucible topped up without needing to manually fill it.

adding items to the Crucible and then Slivering the aspects out:

It doesn't hurt to have extras of these as you might use them for crafting or research. Once
you have these in your inventory you should be able to complete the section.
Next, you will need to research more for Alchemy, and you will also need to make a Essentia
Smeltery. Check with your mod pack to see how Brass Plates are made as these differ with
each mod pack:
When researching Alchemy, you can get a bonus with your Crucible. Some of these notes
might need Vis Crystals, so keep a stockpile.
Once you have completed the section you will be able to craft the Arcane Alembic, Warded
Jars, Void Jars, Blank Labels and Brass Lid Braces.
You will need to wear Goggles of Revealing for this next part.
So how does all this tie together? Well, the Smeltery will break down items directly into the
Essentia it is made of. Use coal or any other fuel to power it (Alumentum works best) and
store them in its inventory. When you put a Alembic on top of the Furnace it will extract one
type of the Essentia. The downside to the Smeltery is that it has a 25% chance of generating
Flux as a byproduct. It also is only about 80% efficient (losing some Essentia in the process).
If you put sandstone into the furnace and look at the Alembic, you will see it start to fill up
with Terra. you will also see some Flux being generated:

You can then right click the Alembic with a Warded Jar and it will put the essentia into the
Jar. Each Jar can only hold 1 type of Essentia, and can hold up to 250 of it. Once you have
removed the Terra, the Alembic will fill up with Perditio. You can also remove this by
rightclicking with a new Warded Jar.
You have the option of creating labels, but 37 labels takes a lot of slime. Alternatively, you
can simply use Goggles of Revealing. However they do have the added benefit of retaining
the label after they are emptied, and will only allow the Essentia that matches the label.. The
Jars will retain their contents when broken (with or without labels):
You can extract the Essentia from the Jars (and the Alembic) with a Phial, but these will only
hold 10 of each Essentia (can also be used to put Essentia into Jars by sneakrightclicking)
This can be an easy way to add Essentia to the Crucible.
You can also use multiple Alembics (up to five). Once one is full, the next one will fill up (or
more likely, if an item contains multiple aspects, one Alembic will start filling with one aspect
and the next will start filling with another aspect, and so on). Filling priority is from the
Alembic touching the Smeltery and up.

Void Jars can be used to delete the excess Essentia (use a label to only void the type
indicated).
This is not the most efficient way to collect Essentia from items, but you can make this
process a little easier with the help of Tubes.
Essentia Tubes
There is a little research to be done here, so either scan all the things you have made up
until now, or visit the Research Table. You need four Phials of Essentia in your inventory.
Break down items in the Furnace and then collect the Essentia.The easiest way to get these
is as follows:
● Phial of Vitium
○ Nether Wart
● Phial of Vinculum
○ Oak door or Amber
● Phial of Alienis
○ Ender pearl
● Phial of Alkimia
○ Gunpowder, blaze powder, brewing stand or magma cream
You may need more than one of the above items, and you will need to empty out your
Alembics with Jars.
The last Essentia you will need is Vitium. This is very hard to come by and there is no easy
way to get it. One option is to collect Mycelium from a Mushroom Island. Finding a
mushroom island can be easy with mods like Nature’s Compass

mod, finding a mushroom island is nearly impossible. In that case, your best bet is to go FAR
AWAY from your base/house and cause a whole bunch of taint. PLEASE DO THIS FAR FAR
AWAY.
Or you could just go to the nether and get nether wart but that’s just the easy way of doing
things.
To cause taint, bring a Crucible, Water, Nitor and five droppers. Set up your Crucible. Once
the water is bubbling, throw the droppers into the Crucible and then sneakrightclick it. This
will release a whole bunch of flux into the area. Alternatively, you can dump a few stacks of
dirt or cobblestone if you have extra lying around.

You will soon notice strange things happening, such as Rifts in the world that will damage
you if you walk into them and will also destroy items. This might not happen straight away so
be patient but you will get a message on screen saying that there is too much flux in the

You are looking for tainted blocks. Once the Seed has tainted a little bit of the area (leave it
for around 23 minutes) kill it and then collect as many tainted soil blocks as possible. You
also want to scan everything in the area too:
You will pick up a few Vitium Crystals as well. No matter what tool you use to mine up taint, it
will take a long time. Once you have a few blocks of tainted soil, return home and use that to
make Phials of Vitium. Store as much Vitium as possible because it’s hard to come by.
Note Using an Exchange Focus to switch tainted blocks with dirt is a much faster way of
collecting taint than mining it.

All these Tubes and Valves work together with the Alembic and the Smeltery. There is a lot
to cover and it's not always easy setting them up to do what you need them to.
Basic tubes can be attached to the Alembic, allowing Essentia to flow through into a Jar with
the same Essentia. When attached to a Jar, there will be a certain amount of “suction.” This
amount of suction can be determined with the Essentia Resonator (rightclick the Tubes).
You can also change Pipes with your Gauntlet (clear the Focus first with Shift+F, or whatever
your key binding is). This will detach pipes from other Pipes and Jars. This can be done by
sneak+right clicking.
Each Jar can only hold one type of Essentia, and hooking up a whole bunch of pipes to a
whole bunch of jars and expecting things to go smoothly is not going to work.
There is a relatively simple way to use pipes to your advantage if you have enough
resources. By using Essentia Buffers, Filtered Essentia Tubes, Jars, Void jars and Bellows
(these can be found early on under the Atifice tab) you can automate the whole essentia
capturing process without having to maintain it and without having to overcomplicate things
with other tubes. You will also only need to create one Essentia Smeltery and one Arcane
Alembic.
Before we build the system it's important to know what each of these tubes do and what we
can do with them:
● Essentia Buffer
○ These will pull Essentia to them and send them down to any other buffer
attached, you can limit which way the Essentia flows by SHIFTRight clicking
with your gauntlet
● Filtered Essenita Tube
○ You can set what Essentia can pass through these tubes by right clicking
them with a vial of essentia in hand.

We want essentia to go from point A to point B and be dropped off at the correct Jar without
getting stuck or clogging the system.

Do this for each buffer, this will ensure the essentia is pushed to next buffer until it finds the
right buffer with the corresponding Filter for its Essentia.

2. If you have normal pipe between buffer (no matter if its one or 10 lengths you will
need to put a buffer after the pipe (just like the first buffer).Otherwise the last buffer
(before the new tube) will get clogged up)
This is just one of many examples of how you setup your essentia transportation and to feel
more than free to create something else based on your base/needs
The easiest way to hook up jars to Alembics is to use Essentia Valves on each Jar, with
pipes going into each Alembic:
Make sure all the valves are closed. Open only one valve at a time (they turn
counterclockwise to open) to fill Jars with Essentia.
You can go crazy and use loads of materials creating the perfect system, but these pipes are
no easy thing to master. One strategy you can do is keep your jars nearby and move them
under the pipes as needed rather than spending the resources on creating valves. This may
be more of a nuisance, but can hold you over until you replace the pipe system if it isn’t your
cup of tea.
Alchemical Metallurgy
The Essentia Smeltery is great but it is still throwing a lot of Flux into the air and is not very
efficient. In order to be able to make something more efficient, you need to dig into
Alchemical Metallurgy once again.

You now know how to make Alchemical Brass. You can also make metals such as
Thaumium. Make one ingot of Thaumium to move on. Revisit your research table as well.
In the Crucible, using 2 Arcane Pedestals and an iron ingot as the catalyst will net you two
Thaumium ingots. Don’t forget to sliver out the remaining Essentia.
Once completed, you can craft Thaumium Blocks, Armor, plates and Tools.
Thaumium Essentia Smeltery
Now that you can make Thaumium Plates, you can upgrade the Smeltery. The current
Smeltery is not very efficient (it loses some of the Essentia when it breaks down items). Do a
bit more research and also make three Thaumium ingots in order to make a plate:

Smeltery. This new smeltery is 90% efficient (unlike the last which was only 80%).and also

This smeltery is unlocked as soon as you discover void metal and is crafted with Void metal
plates and has 95% Efficiency. It works the same as the previous version of the smeltery.

Improved Essentia Distillation
Since you already have the most efficient Smeltery, you may as well try and make it as
efficient as possible when breaking down materials. You can speed up the process with
Auxiliary Slurry Pumps.
A single Slurry pump can be placed (sneakrightclick with it in hand) on any side of your
Smeltery. It will act as a second output. You can even place four more Alembics on top of it.
There is one more stage of this research but it is currently not available.
You can decrease the amount of flux that is let into the surrounding area by adding Auxiliary
Venting Ports. With a bit of research, you should have no trouble completing this part.

You can add up to three Vents (with no Slurry Pump attached). You cannot add Vents to the
top, bottom or front face of the Smeltery. These Vents will cut the amount of Flux let into the
area by a third, but they do have diminishing returns (adding 2 would be most efficient).
Essentia Centrifuge
There is a way to break down compound Essentia (Essentia that is made up of more than
one aspect). This is useful when you have a lot of items with compound Essentia and you
need the Essentia that it is made out of. For example, breaking down Alkimia to get Aqua
and Praecantatio.
The Essentia Centrifuge needs to have Essentia pumped into the bottom of it. Once it breaks
down the Essentia you need to extract it from the top. It will break down the Essentia into
only one of the 2 Essentia that was initially broken down.

way of understanding it.
Alchemical Automation
So far you have used the Crucible to make various items, but there is a simpler way that has
little to no risk of letting flux into the air. By automating the Crucible, you will no longer have
to throw materials in by hand.
Researching Alchemical Automation will enable you to craft the Thaumatorium. This can be
crafted by putting two Alchemical Constructs on top of your Crucible and right clicking it with
Salis Mundus in hand:

The Thaumatorium makes creating things such as Thaumium and Alumentum very easy, by
simply hooking up jars, pipes and a chest to it. The Thaumatorium will automatically pull out
the requires Essentia from any Jars that are hooked up to it. There is no need to worry about
pressure or any other valves/pipes. Ensure that there is a flame below it (just like the
Crucible).
All you need to do for the Thaumatorium to work is to make sure that it's constantly full of
catalysts and has enough Essentia and that it’s creating the right thing. Once you tell the
Thaumatorium what you would like it to make, it will remember the item and keep crafting
that item until it has run out of resources.
When right clicking the Thaumatorium, you need to insert the catalyst for whatever you are
crafting (in this example, I am crafting Thaumium, so my catalyst is an iron ingot). You can
then select the item you wish to craft and it will tell you what it requires.

All you have to do now is click the desired item, and it will start looking for the required

It will also display what item it is crafting on to top of the furnace. Adding a chest to the front

Advanced Essentia Transport
Using pipes to try to get your Essentia to the right place is a hassle, and mastering them
correctly can be a nightmare. Thankfully, there is an easier way to move Essentia from one
place to another without needing to build a complex piping system.
In order to unlock Advanced Essentia Transport, you will need to quickly dive into the Arcane
Infusion Tab (on the left when you open your Thaumonomicon).
Clicking on Basic Infusion will unlock this for you. There is no need to do any research yet.
Going back to the main page of Arcane Infusion will give you two more stages you can dig
into. Currently, you only need to unlock infusion:

You need to scan a few things, do a little research and have the following in your inventory:
● Feather
● Stone Block
● Phial of Essentia Aer
Once you have these, complete this research. The next stage will require you craft a Runic
Matrix. The materials are simple and you should be able to create this without any issues.
Craft the Runic Matrix and jump straight back into the Alchemy Tab. This guide covers
Infusion later on. Keep the Runic Matrix in a chest as you will need this later (also scan it).
Under the Advanced Essentia Transport stage, you need to do a little bit of scanning, but if
you have been scanning as you go then you should be able to complete this straight away.
You should be able to craft two new (and very important) items:
● Filling Essentia Transfuser
○ When attached to Alembics, pipes or Essentia sources, it will draw out
Essentia to either empty Jars or Jars filled with the corresponding Essentia.
This has a 16 block range.
● Emptying Essentia Transfuser
○ Draws Essentia from Jars when placed onto tubes or other devices requiring
Essentia
The Emptying Essentia Transfuser goes on the Thaumatorium, and the Filling Essentia
Transfuser goes on the Alembic:

If you place your Thaumatorium near the Essentia storage system that was explained earlier
in the guide and you place a Emptying Essentia Transfuser on the Thaumatorium you can
craft items with no need for pipes:
Metal Purification
In order to complete this stage you need to use your research table (as you do more and
more research, you will need more and more extra items). There is only one stage in this
research and it will allow you to create clusters of iron, gold and cinnabar. These clusters
give you twice the normal amount of ingots when smelted.

Liquid Death
More research is needed for this (keep using the Crucible Bonus). When you complete this
stage you will be affected by Warp.
Liquid Death does what its says on the tin. It will damage anything (hostile or not), and when
something is killed by Liquid Death, it will drop Essentia Crystals. Great for using in mob
farms! Just don't step in it.
Bottled Taint
This is another stage that will give you a little bit of warp, but for now it's nothing to worry
about. A Bottle of Taint is basically Taint in a Bottle. Throwing a bottle on the ground (DO
NOT DO THIS NEAR YOUR BASE, find a faraway open area.) will slowly cause liquid taint
to spread. Once it disappears, it leaves behind Fibrous Taint, thus causing taint to take over
the area. This taint will continue to spread. This can be very useful for obtaining Vitium if all
the taintrelated objects you have are from the Giant Taint Seed’s doings. Be sure to make
an area cut off with other land with water to avoid unwanted spreading to other areas.
Potion Sprayer
Doing some further research will allow you to unlock the Potion Sprayer. This little machine
will allow you to craft potions from Essentia. This machine will make potions out of Essentia
and store them in the machine. When a redstone signal is applied, the potion will be

splashed out in a 3x3 area in front of the machine. This can be useful in a mob trap, or as an
area to buff yourself.
First, you will need to add a potion to the Sprayer. This will then tell you what Essentia is
needed to create the potion. Attaching an Emptying Essentia Transfuser to the Sprayer will
then automatically pull out the needed essentia from nearby Jars.
This will fill up the bar in the Sprayer (each notch is one potion). When a redstone signal is
applied, you will be sprayed with that potion. Think of this as splash potion machine.

Purifying Bath Salts/Sanity Soap/Arcane Spa
Some stages will give you Warp when you complete them. Warp is not good, and can have
some very strange side effects. By making bath salts, you can work your way to Sanity
Soap.
Sanity Soap will wash away temporary warp. It’s best to use this once you start completing
more stages that can give you a warp.
Using Soap is a chore and requires you to carry around more items. If you complete the
Arcane Spa stage, you will be able to craft the Spa. Pump water into it and fill it with Bath
Salts. This will then fill a 5x5 area with water. This way, you can hop in and hop out without
having to wash yourself with soap:

This wraps up Alchemy in Thaumcraft. There is nothing else you can learn in this section. As
Thaumcraft is updated, more and more stuff may be added. This guide will be updated as

Infusion Stabilization Stable Infusion
The infusion process can be difficult and very frustrating and trying to find answers online is
like looking for a need in a haystack, there are so many different formulas that it becomes
more of a science project.
Be warned that the set up below may not look pretty and could be very expensive but it does
work and will keep all of your future infusions stable. You can modify this as much as you
want but I can not guarantee that your setup will be stable if you decided to change anything.
There are addon mods for thaumcraft that will give you very high levels of infusion and they
may or may not work with the setup below, this setup is only for Thaumcraft infusion recipes
not addons but this still may work.
The basic concept of this is “there is never enough candles”, this may seem extreme but
even with infusions with Very high instability the infusion was still stable.

There are 4 jars in the middle of the altar, these can be filled with whatever essentia your
infusion needs:
This is very overkill and if there are simpler cheaper set ups then they can be posted.

Cloud Stepper Ring
The Cloud Stepper ring will allow you to “double jump.” It is simple to make; just add a
Mundane Ring (made with Alchemical Brass Nuggets) to the middle of your Infusion Altar
and then add an Aer Vis crystal and a feather to two of the Pedestals around the altar.
Remember: symmetry is key. You will also need to have a small supply (50) of Aer Essentia
nearby.
Rightclicking the Matrix with your Gauntlet will start the process and will give you a Cloud
Stepper ring. You equip this in your Baubles ring slot. Jumping twice in quick concession will
spawn a cloud below your feet letting you jump a second time. It also reduces fall damage
somewhat.

Infusion Boosting
Unlocking this requires a little research, but it's worth it. You can speed up the Infusion
process or make the process cheaper. The downside of making this process faster means it
would increase the cost of Infusion. The reverse goes with making the Infusion process
cheaper (will make it much slower). The Infusion Speed Stone or Infusion Cost stone must
be placed below each Pillar of the Altar:

Arcane Paving Stones
Unlocking this will unlock two new blocks:
● Barrier Stone
○ These prevent mobs from crossing them. They will let players cross, but any
other mobs or creatures will not be able to pass. They also prevent Golems
from crossing. These can be disabled with redstone. Its best to put these
down in lines that are unbroken. They also have colours on top of them when
next to a mob:
■ Red There is a gap in the area.
■ Blue Turned off with redstone.
■ Purple Preventing something from passing through.
● Paving Stone of Travel
○ You will run or walk faster while these are under your feet.
Verdant Charms
Once you unlock this stage, you can craft three charms that are worn in your Baubles slots.
These charms must be charged in the Recharging Pedestal, or you can wear the Amulet of
Vis as well as the Charms. The Amulet will charge these items while you wear them. You can
only wear one Charm at a time.

Headband of Curiosity
When worn, the headband will extract knowledge from Vanilla Experience. It's not much, but
it will help if you have a mob farm.
Boots of the Traveller
After doing lots of running, walking, swimming and jumping, you should be able to unlock this
stage. These boots allow you to run, swim and walk faster, and will let you jump higher.
These boots need to be charged first, and will need to be recharged as they are used, so
make sure you have a Amulet of Vis equipped.
Elemental Tools
Tools made from Thaumium are great, but they don't do anything diamond tools can’t.
Luckily you can upgrade them. You need to craft all of the tools (Thaumium Axe, Sword,
Hoe, Pickaxe and Sword) and do a little research. Each one of these tools can be infused
which will give them unique abilities:
● Axe of the Stream
○ When used on a tree, it will look for the furthest block (Log) and then mine
from the top of the tree down, even if you hit the bottom of the tree. All wood
will float towards you. Pressing and holding Right Click will pull items towards
you. You can disable the effect if you hold sneak while chopping.
● Pickaxe of the Core
○ When mining ore blocks you have a chance to mine up a cluster (when
smelted these produce double the normal amount of metal). When
rightclicked against any surface (such as stone) it will show you where the
nearest valuable resources are:

○ Sneakrightclicking will force the pickaxe to act like a normal pick.
● Sword of the Zephyr
○ When hitting foes, it will send gusts of wind towards the enemy, hitting
surrounding targets. While blocking, gusts of wind will blow away enemies
and loose items. It will also slowly lift you into the air.

○ Will dig out a 3x3 area of blocks of a similar material. When rightclicked, it
will attempt to fill a 3x3 area with blocks of the same material (if they are in
your inventory).

Thaumium Fortress Armor
Thaumium armor is great, but by infusing it you can make it much much better. Thaumium
Fortress Armor, when worn as a set, provides the same protection as diamond armor, but
with the added benefit of providing extra magical damage resistance and having a much
higher durability.
Wearing it as a complete set will increase the overall protection offered by all other pieces:
Infusion Enchantment
Enchanting your weapons and tools the regular way depends on luck. Thankfully, you can
use Essentia to enchant items in the Infusion Altar.

Runic Shielding
Unlocking this section allows you to use the Infusion Altar to enchant your armor or any
Baubles item with a Runic Shield. This shield acts as the first line of defence. When you get
hit, this shield absorbs the damage. Once the shield has been depleted, you will start taking
damage.
There are three levels which you can add to your armor. The third level can be difficult, as
the instability rating is high.
Fortress Armor Faceplates
The Fortress Armor Faceplates can be enchanted via the Infusion Altar. These all have very
high levels of instability. Each one has its own unique properties:
Helm of Adds the Goggles of Revealing Effect to the helm. This can be put on
Revealing alongside other masks.
Grinning Devil Reduces the effects of Warp.

Angry Ghost When struck in combat, the creature striking you has a chance to suffer
Faceplate the withering effect.

Infusion Stabilization
The deeper you go into thaumcraft the more and more infusion you will be required to do, the
problem with infusion is that the harder the infusion recipe is the more unstable the infusion
becomes. If you do not stabilize the infusion altar it will fail and might not ever complete, it
can also cause lightning, random explosions, taint to spawn and materials to be destroyed.
When infusing items you can see how stable the altar is by looking at the Matrix in the
middle of the Altar while wearing the Goggles of Revealing:
To unlock this research you will need try an infusion recipe that is not stable and becomes
very unstable during the process. This will trigger you to unlock the Infusion Stabilization
Research.

You can avoid using stabilizers if you build your alter in such as way that it stays stable.
Stabilizers need to be placed the same way as candles or skulls, they can also prevent items
from being knocked over or destroyed by connecting them to the pedestals with redstone
relays. Pedestals also act as a relay, red rune should appear on the base.
Crystal Farming
If you scanned crystals early on, you will have already unlocked ores. During infusion, you
unlock crystal farming. This enables you to grow Crystals without having to go mining for
them. To do this, you need to infuse a crystal with seeds, Salis Mundus and a few different
Essentia (this is different for each crystal, and only works with the crystals you can find
underground and flux crystals). Once completed, you can plant these crystals and watch

Charm of Undying
After scanning a totem of undying you will unlock the ability of craft a Charm of Undying, It
works the same as Totem of Undying except it can be worn as a Charm.
End of Arcane Infusion
This wraps up Arcane Infusion in Thaumcraft. There is nothing else to learn in this section.
As Thaumcraft gets updated, more stuff maybe added. This section will be updated when
new versions of Thaumcraft come out.
Golemancy
There is no reason for you to do all the leg work when you can get Golems to do it all for
you. From carrying stuff around to fighting for you, Golems can just about do anything.
Golems, as a whole, is not as simple as going from one stage to the next and explaining
what each stage gives you. It's best to try to research everything, and then go into detail
about what each rune and Golem does.
You would waste materials just making Golems to see what each one can do and what its
abilities are. You will have to unlock the Arcane Levitator, under Artifice. This is not
complicated, and only needs you to scan a few things.
Doing all the research and the bare minimum crafting is more efficient. Once you have done
each stage, you should go into crafting Golems.
Before you go into Golems, ensure you have the following on hand so you can craft Basic
Golems:

If you examined a red eyed “Angry Zombie” and killed a few for their brains, then you should

Crafting a Simple Golem with no modifiers is a great way to learn how they work and which
Golem to use for what task. In most examples, this guide will use wooden Golems, unless
otherwise stated.
You can hit your golems (please don’t do this), and when they die they will drop a few
materials (such as wood or any other materials they are made from). There is an easier way
to pick these little guys up, by sneakrightclicking on the Golem.

Seals
Having your Golems walking round and doing nothing is not very useful. The only way you
can get these guys to work or do anything is with Seals.
Seals are placed into the world and then configured with the Golemancer’s Bell. Some Seals
have more configuration options than others, and some are as simple as putting them down
and telling which Golem to do what.
When putting a Seal down in the world, you will notice that it almost becomes invisible. This
is normal and not a bug. You can view the Seal again by having your Golemancer’s Bell in
hand. You can put other blocks on top of your Seal, and you can put down more than one
Seal on one block. You can pick Seals back up again if you sneakrightclick on them with
the Bell.
The Golemancer’s Bell will show you where the Seal is and the area in which the seal is
active. It is also used to configure the Seal:
When rightclicking a Seal with the Bell, you are given a list of options on the left. This might
not be the same for all Seals, but the collection seal has some great examples:

Seal crafting is very simple. There are a total of 15 different seals: 11 are simple and 4 are
advanced versions of the simple ones.
Control Seal: Collect
This Seal will check an area (you can configure the size) and look for items that can be
picked up by Golems.

Control Seal: Store
When this Seal is put onto a container, Golems will put items into that inventory. If placed on
a block that doesn’t have an inventory items will be dropped at that location.
You can configure how many items should be put into the inventory and you can filter items

Control Seal: Empty
When this Seal is placed on a chest, Golems will empty the chest. This can also be
configured to ignore items. This Seal is essentially the opposite of the Store Seal. Items can
only be taken out when a specific task requires that item.

This Seal is similar to the Empty Seal but instead, Golems will only take items when there is
a need for the items. If you sneakrightclick your Bell, you can request items to be brought
to you.

Control Seal: Block Break
This Seal will command Golems to break any blocks in the highlighted area. The hardness of
the blocks will determine how quickly blocks are broken. You can filter what kind of blocks
should be broken.
Due to the nature of Golems this Seal would not be great for mining.

Control Seal: Guard
Golems (that are combat capable) will guard an area, not letting any hostile creature pass
without a fight. If the Golem has Deft, anything killed will drop experience.

Control Seal: Butcher
This Seal acts much like the Guard Seal except it will only target adult animals and will also
ensure at least 1 breeding pair stay alive.

Requirements:

Control Seal: Harvest
This Seal does not always work 100% of the time. When this Seal is placed down, Golems
will attempt to harvest crops (within the given area) and will replant crops if there are seeds.
You can toggle this on and off, replanting and request provisions.
Requirements:

Control Seal: Lumberjack
This Seal will allow nearby Golems to harvest trees. Golems will only target logs and they
will start to harvest the FURTHEST log connected to the tree.
Requirements:

Control Seal: Use
Allows Golems to act like players, enabling them to leftclick or rightclick whatever block this
Seal is placed on. You can set to rightclick with specific items. This Seal will stay in place
even if the block it was on was removed.
Requirements:

Control Seal: Stock
This Seal is much like the Store Seal but it will keep a certain amount of items in a container,
ensuring a minimum amount of items are kept inside, and will prevent it from being
overstocked.

Advanced Seals
There are a few alternative versions of some Seals. These advanced Seals come with a few
more options when rightclicking them with a Bell:
● Area
○ You can now pick the Up/Down height of the Seal.
● Filter
○ You can now filter 9 specific items.
● Options
○ Use meta, NBT, Ore dictionary and same modes as filters for items.
There are other options in other Seals, so the above options may change/differ depending
on the Seal. Advanced Seals act the same as normal Seals, but with more options and more
limitations to which Golems can use them.
There are four total:
● Advanced Control Seal: Collect
○ Has more Control over what items should or should not be collected
● Advanced Control Seal: Store
○ Has more control over what items should be stored (NBT data, Ore Dic)
● Advanced Control Seal: Empty
○ Has more control over what items should be taken out (NBT data, Ore Dic)
● Advanced Control Seal: Guard
○ Gives you greater control over which creatures the Golem will target.

Artifice
Artifice is where the real fun in Thaumcraft begins. You might have already looked around
the Artifice tab a little, to help unlock other stages in other tabs. Artifice is all about fun tools
and gadgets that can make your life a little easier and a little more fun.
Arcane Lamp
When this lamp is placed down it will slowly spawn light sources (up to 16 blocks away) if the
light levels are low. This lamp can be controlled by redstone. When the lamp is removed, the
created light sources will disappear:
Lamp of Growth
Unlike its Arcane counterpart, the Lamp of Growth stimulates nearby plants to grow, BUT it
must be fed Essentia (Herba). It can be controlled by redstone:
Lamp of Fertility
Just like the Lamp of Growth, this lamp needs to have Essentia (Desiderium) pumped into it.
This lamp will force animals (if there are less than 8) to breed.

Magic Mirror
You need to scan an Enderman in order to complete this stage. These only work in pairs, so
if you want to use them, make two. When placed down and linked, these mirrors act as a
portal. Any item put into one mirror will fall out of the second.
To link these mirrors, you need to place down your first mirror and then rightclick it with the
second mirror. You will know these are working when you place down your second mirror
and it has a black spot in the middle (of both of them).
Whenever items are put through these mirrors, there is a chance there might be a little bit of
flux caused.
Magic Hand Mirror
Much like the Magic Mirror, the Magic Hand Mirror will act as a way to SEND items (you can’t
receive items). To link it, rightclick on an unlinked Magic Mirror. Then you can rightclick the
Magic Hand Mirror while in hand, and put items in the empty slot to send them to the Magic
Mirror.

Essentia Mirrors
These are just like Magic Mirrors, but they can only transport Essentia. This does not work
with tubes but will work with Transfusers. You have to link these mirrors:
Hungry Chest
Any items that fall onto this chest will be automatically deposited into the chest.
Arcane Levitator
The Arcane Levitator will slowly float any creature up when stood above it (by default it is 8
blocks). The Levitator is powered by the local aura and the amount is dependant on the
configuration. The toggle is on the back of the device. Hold sneak to slowly float down:

Infernal Furnace
In order to complete this section you will need to go into the Nether. The Infernal Furnace is
another multiblock structure you need to use Salis Mundus on. This fuel free furnace will
smelt anything you throw into the top of it and it will spit out any nuggets and ingots from the
front. You can place a chest in the hole to catch the items, and a brain in a jar nearby to
catch the experience.
You have a chance to gain bonus materials such as nuggets and Rare Earth. The furnace
will not double your ores unless they are ore clusters. If your throw in items that cannot be
smelted they will be destroyed.
When throwing meat into the furnace you have a chance to gaining Meat Nuggets. These,
combined with sugar, will make Triple Meat Treat which, when eaten, will give you
Regeneration.

Arcane Bellows
These Bellows can be attached to Furnaces and Crucibles to speed them up, but their main
purpose is to speed up the Infernal Furnace. You can attach up to four to the Infernal
Furnace and it will decrease the amount of flux generated, increase its speed and increase
the chances of getting bonus nuggets and Rare Earth.
Thaumic Dioptra
These items will show the levels of Vis and Flux for the surrounding chunks. The default view
is Vis, and if you right click it, then it will show Flux:

Arcane Pattern Crafter
The Arcane Pattern Crafter will craft 1 item from 1 material. You need to place it on a chest
and put a chest above it. Once the chests have been placed, you need to toggle what
recipes you would like to have the Pattern Crafter craft. The dial on the bottom of the Crafter
can be right clicked and the 3x3 grid above will change. Once you have your recipe, add
materials to the top chest and the Pattern Crafter will craft on its own until the top chest is
empty:

Arcane Grappler
The Arcane Grappler is a grappling hook powered by Vis (you will need to charge it).
Rightclick will fire a grapple that will attach to any surface and then pull you towards it. You
will gain a little be of speed so be careful not to kill yourself. Sneaking will detach the
grappling hook. The Grappling Hook has a 20 block range.
Vis Generator
The Vis Generator will generate 10 FE/RF per tick at the cost of vis from the aura. A single
point of vis will power the machine for 5 seconds of operation. These can be hooked up to
Thermal Expansion machines.
Arcane Ear
The Arcane Ear will emit a redstone signal if it hears a note it recognises from a nearby note
block. There is also a toggle version which will either toggle on or off when it hears a note.

Automated Crossbow
The Automated Crossbow shoots at enemies when they are within a 24 block range. When
you place these in the world they will have 15 Health and they can be picked back up again
by sneakrightclicking. You need to give them arrows to shoot. They have a 1 slot inventory
but placing them on an upwards facing dispenser filled with arrows will auto refill them:
Advanced Automated Crossbow
The advanced version of the Automated Crossbow is more configurable, with which entities
it will target. It also has a greater fire rate and 20 health. You still load it with an upwards
facing dispenser:
Arcane Bore
When placed down and given a redstone signal, the Arcane Bore will mine out blocks in front
of it. You will need to give the Bore a pickaxe in order for it to work. If the pickaxe is

enchanted, it will increase the Depth, Speed and Width. A Fortune enchantment can also
increase drops. Placing down a chest next to the Bore will autodeposit items. The Bore will
use 1 vis per 4 blocks mined. Pickaxes will last up to 50 times longer in the Bore. You can
change the direction the bore faces by leftclicking it with an empty hand from the direction
you would like it to mine.
Eldritch
This is considered the “endgame” of Thaumcraft. You are given the ability to craft hightier
weapons, armor, and tools, at the cost of your sanity. Researching any topic in this tab will
require Eldritch research alongside gaining warp when you unlock it.
To start with the eldritch tree, a crimson cultist needs to be scanned. I found this easiest by
running around with high warp (ate half a stack of zombie brains from my zombie farm) in a
desert (good visibility). A red and purple portal will spawn and out will pop some cultists. The
mages have seeking projectiles so watch out for those. After scanning a cultist, you will need
one of the books they have a small chance to drop. You may need to encounter a few portals
before one drops.
Unlocking Eldritch
To progress in “Delving into the Eldritch”, you’ll need to obtain something native to the void,
void seeds. You need the Causality Collapser which has the “Flux Rifts” and “Flux” research
as prerequisites, found on the “Fundamentals” tab.
The Causality Collapser is a device that when thrown (as you would a snowball) into a rift,
closes the rift. The Thaumonomicon recommends that you first stabilize the rift.

After the rift collapses in either case, you will get void seeds (about 10) and a chance at a
primordial pearl/mote.
Before we can unlock the Eldritch tab you will need to do a little research, this can be made
easier if you place a Brain in a Jar near the Research table. You will also need to fight a few
Crimson Clerics (the guys in the robes) as well as Scan both types, this will unlock The
Crimson Cultist Research and The Crimson Rights Research, they will also drop Crimson
Rites, this book cannot be consumed or read but it will be used for research:

Once this research is done it is time to find some Cultists.
The Crimson Cult
The cult can be found randomly in the world (deserts are best) they will appear out of a
portal, they will keep spawning until your destroy the portal, scan Both the Crimson Knight
and Cleric to Unlock this research.
There are 2 types of Portals a Great and Lesser Portal, the great portals will be bigger, have
more health and will also spawn boxes around them and spawn Cultists at a great rate as
well as have “Boss Type” health:

Void Seeds
As long as you have closed a few rifts, scanned the seeds and gathered some Eldritch
research then you should be able to complete this almost instantly.
After completing this you will be able to use the void seeds to make Void Ingots (Scan
these), Void Tools, Weapons, Armor and Void Metal Blocks:
These tools, weapons and armor do have warping 1 (you might go insane) but they do have
the amazing property of being able to repair themselves.
After Examining the metal you should also jump into Golemancy, you should be able to
make Void metal Golems who can self heal.
Voidseer’s Pearl
With a little Observation and Theory work into Eldritch you should be able to unlock this fairly
quickly, the Voidseer’s Pearl is not easy to craft as the infusion process has very high
instability but once made it can be used to provide a Vis discount directly proportional to how
much permanent Warp you have incurred.
Primal Crusher
This tool will act like a Pickaxe and a Shovel but will also mine a 3x3 grid, it also repairs
itself, a very handy tool to have that might not ever break.
Void Thaumaturge Armor
This 3 part set of robes when warn will give you:
● Vis discount depending on your level of warp
● Repair Itself
● Goggles of Revealing in the Hood
● Same Durability as Thaumium Fortress Armor
● You will gain temporary warp that could turn into permanent warp

Void Siphon
Void seeds are not so easy to come by unless you want to open and close rifts, this will get
expensive. The void Siphon can be placed down near rifts, they will slowly drain the rift and
make Void Seeds. This will be dropped into the Void Siphons inventory, this will close rifts
over time and more then once can be placed near a rift:
