JUNKER GAS CALORIMETER

THEORETICAL DESCRIPTION

Ÿ Easy determination of calorific value of gas between

1000 to 26,000 Kcal/m3

Ÿ Mostly used in educational institutes, biogas plants,

research labs etc.

Ÿ It operates on the principle that the heat liberated from

a known quantity of gas burnt inside the chamber of
calorimeter can be completely utilised for raising the
temperature of a known quantity of water in
calorimeter.

Ÿ By considering the heat absorbed by the calorimeter

and water and the heat given out by the sample are
used to determine the calorific value of the gas.

Ÿ The apparatus consists of the inner combustion

chamber in which the gas is burnt. This chamber is
surrounded by water jacket through which the flues
passes.

Ÿ Water enters the calorimeter at a constant head and

steady flow rate. Its inlet and outlet temperatures are
recorded.

Ÿ The gas whose calorific value is to be determined is

made to pass through gas flow meter with facility of
revolutions to record its volume at room temperature
and is burnt in the inner combustion chamber.

DIGITAL TEMP. GAS FLOW METER WITH Ÿ The gas on combustion heats the water jacket and
INDICATION REVOLUTION FACILITY then passes down the flues in water jacket thereby
ensuring complete heat transfer of combustion to
water.
Ÿ The hot products of combustion move upward in the chamber and then downward through the flues provided
in the water jacket and escape through exit. A thermometer at the exit indicates its temperature. Water which
is moving in a direction opposite to that of the gases in the flues goes out from the upper position.

Ÿ Its temperature and volume are recorded. Water formed by the condensation of steam is also
collected.Knowing the volume of water and the rise in its temperature the heat given out by the gas can be
known.
TESTING CAPABILITES AND TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
Ÿ Tripod stand provided with adjustable levelling screws to hold the calorimeter in vertical position. The
thermometers are inserted in such a way that the scales are visible to observe.

Ÿ The gas flow meter is levelled using the spirit lever by adjusting the levelling screws and the outlet of gas flow
meter is connected to the burner.

Ÿ The water is poured through the holder provided for inserting the thermometer till it reaches the mark.If the
water level is above the mark the excess water is drained by opening the cock provided.

Ÿ The inlet tube is connected to the outlet of the pressure governor by rubber tube provided.

Ÿ The float is lifted slightly by holding the thread and water is poured till the water overflows through the side
wall tube. The inlet of the governor is connected to the gas source ensuring that the outlet nose cock and the
cover is closed.

Ÿ Water supply from the water tap is connected to water inlet. The rubber tube is connected to the water
overflow tube and its other end is placed in the sink. The thermometer is then inserted. The water main is
turned on and water supply is adjusted as per requirement during the test. This lets out the air bubbles inside
the water circulating system.

Ÿ The gas is allowed to pass for two to three revolutions as indicated by the flowmeter. Then the burner is
lighted thereby adjusting the air regulator sleeve and gas tap to get a perfect non luminous flame. The burner
is clamped keeping it to the top most position.

Ÿ The water outlet temperature is allowed to indicate a steady temperature which may take 20 to 30 minutes.
2000ml measuring jar is kept beneath the swinging water outlet tube thereby counting the number of
revolutions the gas flow meter pointer takes to find the volume of gas consumed during the test period.

Ÿ When the pointer makes 2 to 3 revolutions the water outlet is swinged back to waste. The temperatures of
water inlet, outlet ans gas flow meter are noted immediately

FOLLOWING OBSERVATIONS ARE MADE

1. Volume of water collected during the test period = ..........m3

2. Specific weight of water = 1000kg/m3

3. Room temperature = ...........°C

4. Volume of gas burnt during the test period = ..........m3

5. Water inlet temperature T1 = ........°C

6. Water outlet temperature T2 = .......°C

Complete test procedure along with the formula for finding the calorific value will be provided in the manual
along with the apparatus.

PRECAUTIONS
1. The gas flow meter should be kept in a perfect horizontal position and there should not be any excess water.

2. Donot rotate the pointer of the gas flow meter by hand especially when there is water inside the meter as it
may damage the meter.

3.Test readings for water inlet and outlet temperatures and gas flowrates are to be taken only after the steady
state conditions are reached.

4. Waterflow must be at a uniform rate and any fluctuation in the flow rate must be avoided.

Wishing You A Precise Testing
