CLASSIFICATION
Therapeutic: -antianginals -antihypertensives Pharmacologic: Beta blockers
INDICATION
-hypertension -angina pectoris -prevention of MI & dec. mortality in patients w/ recent MI -mgmt. of stable, symptomatic heart failure due to ischemic, hypertensive or cardiomyopathic origin
ACTION
-Blocks stimulation of beta1 (myocardial) adrenergic receptors -dec. bp & heart rate -dec. freq. of attacks of angina pectoris *well absorbed after oral admin.
CONTRAINDICATION
-uncompensated CHF -pulmonary edema -cargiogenic shock -bradycardia or heart block
SIDE EFFECTS
CNS: fatigue, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, memory loss CV: bradycardia, CHF, pulmo edema, hypotension RESP: wheezing EENT: blurred vision, stuffy nose GU: erectile dysfunction
ASSESSMENT
-Monitor VS and ECG every 515min during and for several hrs after parenteral administration. -Monitor I & O ratios & daily weights. Assess routinely for s/sx of CHF. -Angina: assess frequently and char. Of anginal attacks periodically during therapy.

CLASSIFICATION
Therapeutic: -antipyretics -nonopioid analgesics Pharmacologic: salicylates
INDICATION
-prophylaxis of transient ischemic attacks & MI -inflammatory disorders: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis-mild to moderate pain
ACTION
Produce analgesia and reduce inflammation and fever by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins. Aspirin only dec. platelet aggregation -analgesia -reduction of fever -reduction of inflammation
CONTRAINDICATION
-Hypersensitivity to aspirins or other salicylates -Cross-sensitivity with other NSAIDs may exist. -with viral infections
SIDE EFFECT
EENT: tinnitus GI: GI bleeding, dyspepsia, epigastric distress, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain HEMAT: anemia, hemolysis, inc. bleeding time MISC: anaphylaxis, laryngeal edema
ASSESSMENT
Patients who have asthma, allergies, and nasal polyps or who are allergic to tartrazine are an inc. risk for developing hypersensitivity reactions. Pain: assess pain and limitation of movement; note type; location and intensity before and at the peak after administration. Fever: assess for fever and note associated signs (diaphoresis, tachycardia, malaise, chills)

CLASSIFICATION
Therapeutic: anti-infectives
INDICATION
Tx of the ff bacterial infections: -UTI (cystitis & prostatitis) -gonorrhea -gynecologic infections -respiratory tract infections -skin and skin structure infections
ACTION
-inhibit bacterial DNA synthesis by inhibiting DNA gyrase -death of susceptible bacteria *well absorbed after oral admin.
CONTRAINDICATION
-hypersensitivity -cross-sensitivity among agents within class may occur
SIDE EFFECT
CNS: seizures, dizziness, headache, insomnia CV: arrhythmias GI:pseudomembra nous colitis, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain MISC: anaphylaxis
ASSESSMENT
-Assess for infection prior and during therapy. -Observe for s/sx of anaphylaxis (rash, pruritis, laryngeal edema, wheezing). Discontinue drug and notify physician or other health care professional immediately if these problems occur.
