HOW TO PREVENT MENTAL ILLNESS

A pleasure greetings to all of you, freshmen. Welcome to the University of Saint Louis
Tuguegarao. Why are younger adults among the most affected by mental health issues? A lot of
students are suffering from mental illness because of the pressure we feel from our families.
Some of you are optimistic about a new beginning, but some are struggling with mental health
and academic challenges. There is a time we want to give up and want to be free from high
expectations, pressure, and all. But a little advice to all of you, freshmen, that before you give
up, remember all the hard works, sleepless nights, hunger, and tears you've experienced just to
get from here. Maybe it's just the beginning of the beginning but you already started it, so why
not finish it, right? It may be hard for now but rest assured that the outcome is more than you
expected.

As we all know, mental health influences what we feel and how we think and behave. As you
enter this University, you can't avoid stress but you can prevent suffering a mental illness
caused by stress. The main reason why students are suffering from mental illness is because of
the high expectations of our family to us. We're afraid that they might treat us as a failure when
we failed to reach their expectations of us. Being an emotionally fit and stable person makes
you truly alive and can easily manage emotionally difficult situations. You should first start taking
care of yourself like calming your mind by listening to soft music, being more social, setting
realistic goals for yourself, and taking care of your body. Being surrounded by individuals who
understand your circumstances and respect you as the unique individual that you are will help
you avoid mental illness. Don't stay with toxic people. You can also pursue a hobby or any other
creative activity that you enjoy to relieve your stress from academics and others. As much as
you can, be optimistic and stay away from negative thoughts.

Always remember that our mind is one of the most powerful organs in our body, regulating the
functioning of all other organs. When our minds are unstable, they affect the whole functioning
of our bodies. Being both physically and emotionally fit is the key to success in all aspects of
life. People should be aware of the consequences of mental illness and must give utmost
importance to keeping the mind healthy like the way the physical body is kept healthy. Mental
and physical health cannot be separated from each other. And only when both are balanced can
we call a person perfectly healthy and well. We may also connect spiritually with ourselves and
serve as role models for others. We'd also be able to serve people without being a mental drain
on them.
