DENR-CENRO Taytay joins the 2nd
International Conference on the West
Philippine Sea
A
fter over a month period since
the last attendance to a
research symposium, CENRO
Taytay again participated in another
research conference, the first for CY
2016. Two posters entitled Sustainable
Coral Reef Ecosystem Management in
Bacuit Bay, El Nido, Palawan: A
Conservation Effort on Coral Reef
Rehabilitation (1) and Reef Assessment
in Matinloc, Tapiutan, and Cadlao
Island, El Nido Palawan (2) were
exhibited to the 2nd International
Conference on the West Philippine Sea
held on February 18-20, 2016 at
Legend Hotel, Puerto Princesa City,
Palawan.

The conference aims to present the
previous and current researches in the
West Philippine Sea (WPS) on
management and inclusive growth of
the area. This also serves as venue to
gather multidiscipline information in
order to understand more the West
Philippines Sea at the perspective of
research and development. It provides
opportunities for the delegates to
personally exchange new ideas and
application experiences to establish
business or research relations and to
find global partners for future
collaboration. The results will be the
basis to initiate food security, income
generation, trade development, and
industries at different parts of the sea.
The Said conference was attended
by scientists, scholars, local
government units, business sectors,
non-government organizations, and
students from the different universities
in Asia and around the world. This also
served as venue to present research
activities and foster research relations
among universities, research
institutions and other industries. A
number of lecturers, plenary speakers
and oral and poster presenters
participated in the three (3) days event
to exchange ideas on sustainable
utilization and management of
resources in the coastal marine areas
and small islands, of which could be
reflected to the sustainable use of WPS
through the changing time and climate.

his speech emphasized the agency’s
various projects in Palawan and the

Director, on the other hand, discussed
on his talk the environment of Spratly
which is home to several species of
fish and corals. He also noted the
declining fish biomass due to muro-ami
fishing. Meanwhile, the plenary
speakers, Mr. Edwin Gil Q. Mendoza,
Division II Director of Maritime and
Ocean Affairs Office of Department of
Foreign Affairs and CHED
Commissioner Dr. Ruperto S.
Sanggalang conversed the Asean
Community; Asian Economic
Integration and West Philippine Sea
and the lower performance on research
of the country compare to other Asean
countries.
The conference proper conjoined
the poster viewing and presentation of
different researches and studies until
the second day. The participants were
toured in Puerto Princesa Underground
River and Ugong Rock Adventures on
the third day of the conference.
The plenary speakers, participants and guest of the 2 nd
International Conference on the West Philippine Sea held on
February 18-20, 2016 at Legend Hotel, Puerto Princesa City.
Western Philippine University
(WPU) sponsored and hosted the said
event which is being conducted every
