Module Activity: Learning Task#1: Preparing

Herbarium Specimens
In this activity, you are required to collect a known plant sample (including English name and scientific
name) that you will prepare for herbarium. A smaller plant is preferred so the whole plant (roots, stem,
leaves, and flowers) can be collected.

Additional instructions:
Be sure to remove the soil by shaking and washing the specimen. Then allow to drip dry or pat
dry using paper towel. Wipe the leaves with wet paper towel to remove dust or other adhering
insects that can cause the specimen to decay.

DESCRIPTION OF PLANT Herbaceous: A herb that is a member of the
Legumes and has climbing stems with short,
soft hairs.
Flower: Dark Blue funnel-shaped, 4 cm by 3
cm, single or paired, standard obovate,
notched or rounded at apex, blue with
yellow base, or entirely white.
Leaves: alternately-arranged leaves are
pinnate with 5-7 elliptic or ovate leaflets,
2.5-5 cm long. Each leaflet is thinly papery
or membranous, and measuring 2.5-5 cm
long and 1.5-3.5 cm wide.
