MOMENTUM BEHIND CDN MARKET SHOWING NO SIGN OF SLOWING

Activity in the burgeoning content-delivery (CDN) market is set to accelerate in 2011, as a growing number of players from the telecoms and media industries place the concept at the center of their strategies. Thats one of the many findings from Informa Telecoms & Medias latest research project, an ongoing survey of senior executives at CDN providers, network operators, equipment vendors and content providers. Interest was already running high at the end of 2010, by which time 41 network operators had confirmed to Informa their plans to take part in the CDN market (see fig. 1 and 2). But the reaction to the survey has exceeded even our alreadyhigh expectations. Since its launch in February, it has generated hundreds of responses, with several weeks still to run.

Over four out of 10 respondents thought delivery of content to the TV settop box would be a priority for their CDN strategies within the next six months, with about three out of 10 saying the same about connected TVs and tablets (see fig. 4 on page 5).

THE END OF THE BEGINNING FOR AKAMAI?

Most respondents were certain that the explosion of interest in CDNs would change the market forever. Only 7% said that the current market leader, Akamai, would be dominant in five years, with the vast majority predicting a number of different scenarios (see fig.5 on page 2). The most popular prediction, with 22% of the vote, was that no one party would dominate; the market, they say, will be fragmented with multiple conventional and telecoms-operator CDN providers. That said, about one-quarter said that Akamai would continue to dominate at an international level, with multiple telecomsnetwork operators dominating at regional or national levels or both.

WHERE TO BEGIN: BUILD, BUY OR PARTNER?

Although the majority of respondents are firm in their commitment to playing a role in the CDN market, there is much room for debate about how to make the most of the opportunity. The two most popular options for market entry, for example, are at opposite ends of the spectrum: partnering with existing CDN providers, and building CDNs using vendor technologies (see fig. 3). Many operators believe that only by building their own CDNs can they bring something new to the market. Existing CDN providers argue that only by piggybacking on their live networks can newcomers succeed. Whatever the case, many respondents are not sure how to proceed. The third-most-popular option was planning to enter, but undecided.

FROM GIGABYTES TO BIGGER BENEFITS

The growing interest of telecoms operators was also reflected in the respondents opinions of what a CDN strategy should be about. Revenues from CDN transport the bread-and-butter of the industry to date was ranked as the least important goal of a CDN strategy. The more cost-effective delivery of own-party video and of third-party video were tied for first, followed by the potential to establish a more balanced commercial relationship with content providers. These findings highlight operators desire to use CDNs not only to make money but also to save on the costs of traffic generated by the BBC iPlayer, Hulu and other video services riding over the top of their networks. But operators still appear convinced that they can compete on more than just price. Selling CDN services as a loss leader was ranked as the least attractive selling point of operator services, while their unique ability to control quality of service on last-mile broadband networks came out on top.

Unsurprisingly, interest in CDNs is being driven by the growing popularity of online video, with respondents ranking the service far and away the most important to CDN success. The importance of online video is also closely linked to the opportunities offered by the emergence of new big screen connected devices.
