ABSTRACT
Business development can be summarized as the ideas, initiatives, and activities that help make a
business better. This includes increasing revenues, growth in terms of business expansion,
increasing profitability by building strategic partnerships, and making strategic business
decisions. Business development can include many objectives, such as sales growth, business
expansion, the formation of strategic partnerships, and increased profitability.

Successful business development impacts every department within a company, including sales,
marketing, manufacturing, human resources, accounting, finance, product development, and
vendor management. Business developers should be aware of new market opportunities,
possibilities for expansion, competitor developments, and the current sources of the company's
revenue.

The business developer is concerned with the analytical preparation of potential growth
opportunities for the senior management or board of directors as well as the subsequent support
and monitoring of its implementation. Both in the development phase and the implementation
phase, the business developer collaborates and integrates the knowledge and feedback from the
organization's specialist functions, for example, research and development, production, marketing ,
and sales to assure that the organization is capable of implementing the growth opportunity
successfully.

Business development is to be thought of as a marketing tactic. The objectives include branding,

expansion in markets, new user acquisition, and awareness. However, the main function of
business development is to utilize partners in selling to the right customers. Creating opportunities
for value to be ongoing in the long term is important. To be successful in business development
the partnership must be built on strong relationships.

Business development is an important aspect of any business venture. Business development

executives work by evaluating the performance of a company and identifying areas for
improvement. They require a specific set of skills to be successful in their ventures. In this article,
we will look at what is business development, what role it plays in a company's growth and what
skills you need to work as a business development executive.

A business development executive or a business developer is a professional who assists companies

in expanding their business operations and value. They may work as part of the company as a
regular, salaried employee or as an independent consultant on a contract basis. Depending on the
industry, the day-to-day tasks of business developers and the strategies they employ may vary, but
the overall mission remains the same.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

“Knowledge is not the power, Implementation of that Knowledge is the Power”

∙ Listen
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the
communication process.

Listening is a soft skill that allows people to understand the information others convey to
them. It is part of the communication skill set that includes speaking skills, also known as
verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.

Listening is key to all effective communication. Without the ability to listen effectively,
messages are easily misunderstood. As a result, communication breaks down and the
sender of the message can easily become frustrated or irritated.

∙ Understand
A clear understanding of your skills and strengths will also help you to build your
'personal brand', enabling you to market yourself more effectively to potential employers
both on paper.

∙ Learn
"Learning skills" is a term that describes the tasks involved in learning, including time
management, note-taking, reading effectively, study skills, and writing tests.

Learning keeps your mind engaged and body active. It helps you get new and knowledge-
based perspectives on the world around you. It helps you gain new experiences, trains
your brain to handle a wide range of challenges, and keeps your neural pathways active.

∙ Speak
Speaking is an act of making vocal sounds. We can say that speaking means to converse,
or expressing one's thoughts and feelings in spoken language. To speak often implies
conveying information. It may be from an informal remark to a scholarly presentation to a
formal address.
Speaking skills are the skills that give us the ability to communicate effectively. These
skills allow the speaker, to convey his message in a passionate, thoughtful, and
convincing manner. Speaking skills also help to assure that one won't be misunderstood
by those who are listening.

∙ Practice
Practical skills are self-help and life-saving skills and lessons that you can learn, teach to
others, and practice every day to prepare and protect your and others' health. Most
practical skills do not require special certification or formal training to perform, but you
do need education.
Practice lets us execute a task while using less and less active brain processing. It makes
things automatic. When performers master one aspect of their work, they free their minds
to think about another aspect.

INTERNSHIP DISCUSSION

Just having a good degree is no longer enough to secure that all-important graduate job
offer in today’s world. Pertinent work experience is now just as valuable as your degree
and exam results when it comes to building a successful career. As a result, internships
have become an essential way to help candidates make themselves stand out. The
importance of an internship has been shown in several recent surveys. According
to NACE’s Class of 2019 Student Survey, “More than half of all graduating seniors who
applied for a full-time job (53.2%) received at least one job offer. Within this group,
57.5% of students who had an internship and 43.7% of graduating seniors who did not
have an internship received a job offer.” Not bad right? Let’s keep it going.

We will discuss everything you need to know about internships and determine why
interning at a company is vital to career growth.

So, let’s get started!

∙ The concept of an internship

You need the experience to get hands-on knowledge in your career field. In today’s
labour market, employers rely heavily on resumes that demonstrate relevant work history,
whether it is from actual job experience, volunteer work, or interning at a company.

An internship is an official program offered by organisations to help train and provide

work experience to students and recent graduates. The concept of working as an intern
began a long time ago but has drastically evolved over the years. Internships first started
as a labourer who would take on young individuals and teach them their art or trade. In
exchange for being taught a skill, the trainee would agree to work for the labourer for a
specific time. Even then, the purpose of an internship or rather an apprenticeship was to
gain new skills to be able to obtain future work.

∙ How valuable is job experience?

Getting work experience is an essential aspect of starting your career as a young graduate.
The earlier you start gaining experience for your CV, the better. Job experience is not just
restricted to an office job with a large organisation. You can get an internship at a small
company or get experience by freelancing. Any experience where you use skills that you
can transfer to your future career is an excellent addition to your CV. It can help you
demonstrate your commitment and capabilities to an employer while highlighting the
skills that are both appropriate and transferable to the post you are applying for. An
internship is one of the best ways to gain that all-important job experience.

Here are the top 5 reasons we think show the importance of an internship.

∙ Internships provide exposure to the real world.

∙ Internships give you a platform to establish critical networking connections.

∙ Internships allow you to learn more about yourself.

∙ Internships equip you with more than just technical skills.

∙ Internships allow you to gain a competitive edge.

∙ Final Thoughts

To sum up, internships play a crucial role in shaping one’s career. It not only helps
undergraduates and graduates gain real exposure to working environments but also helps
them develop the necessary skills required to stand out in a saturated job market.
CONCLUSION

In a nutshell, this internship has been an excellent and rewarding experience. I can
conclude that there have been a lot I’ve learnt from my work at Super77. Needless to say,
the technical aspects of the work I’ve done are not flawless and could be improved
provided enough time. As someone with no prior experience whatsoever I believe my
time spent in research and Interaction with clients it was well worth it and contributed to
finding an acceptable solution to build a leadership. Two main things that I’ve learned the
importance of time-management skills and self-motivation.

Chapter 2.0: About the Department

∙ Business Development
In the simplest terms, business development can be summarized as the ideas, initiatives,
and activities that help make a business better. This includes increasing revenues, growth
in terms of business expansion, increasing profitability by building strategic partnerships,
and making strategic business decisions.

“Business Development Executive,” “Manager of Business Development,” and “VP,

Business Development” are all impressive job titles often heard in business organizations.
Sales, strategic initiatives, business partnerships, market development, business
expansion, and marketing—all of these fields are involved in business development but
are often mixed up and mistakenly viewed as the sole function of business development.

∙ Understanding the Basics of Business Development

Business development activities extend across different departments, including sales,

marketing, project management, product management, and vendor management.
Networking, negotiations, partnerships, and cost-savings efforts are also involved. All of
these different departments and activities are driven by and aligned with the business
development goals.

For instance, a business has a product or service which is successful in one region, such
as the India. The business development team assesses further expansion potential. After
all due diligence, research, and studies, it finds that the product or service can be
expanded to a new region, such as Brazil.

∙ Sales

Sales personnel focus on a particular market or a particular (set of) client(s), often for a
targeted revenue number. In this case, business development assesses the Brazilian
markets and concludes that sales worth $1.5 billion can be achieved in three years. With
such set goals, the sales department targets the customer base in the new market with their
sales strategies.
Internship Report Title

Fig.1

∙ Marketing

Marketing involves promotion and advertising aimed towards the successful sale of
products to end customers. Marketing plays a complementary role in achieving sales
targets. Business development initiatives may allocate an estimated marketing budget.
Higher budgets allow aggressive marketing strategies like cold calling, personal visits,
roadshows, and free sample distribution. Lower budgets tend to result in passive
marketing strategies, such as limited online ads, print ads, social media ads, and
billboards.
Internship Report Title

Fig.2

∙ Project Management

Does the business expansion require a new facility in the new market, or will all the
products be manufactured in the base country and then imported into the targeted market?
Will the latter option require an additional facility in the base country? Such decisions are
finalized by the business development team based on their cost- and time-related
assessments. Then, the project management/implementation team swings into action to
work towards the desired goal.
Internship Report Title

Fig.3

∙ Product Management

Regulatory standards and market requirements vary across countries. A medicine of a

certain composition may be allowed in India but not in the United Kingdom, for example.
Does the new market require a customized—or altogether new—version of the product?

These requirements drive the work of product management and manufacturing

departments, as decided by the business strategy. Cost consideration, legal approvals, and
regulatory adherence are all assessed as a part of a business development plan.
Internship Report Title

Fig.4

∙ Negotiations, Networking, and Lobbying

A few business initiatives may need expertise in soft skills. For example, lobbying is legal
in some locales and may become necessary for penetrating the market. Other soft skills
like networking and negotiating may be needed with different third parties, such as
vendors, agencies, government authorities, and regulators. All such initiatives are part of
business development.

∙ Cost Savings
Business development is not just about increasing sales, products, and market reach.
Strategic decisions are also needed to improve the bottom line, which includes cost-
cutting measures. An internal assessment revealing high spending on travel, for instance,
may lead to travel policy changes, such as hosting video conference calls instead of on-
site meetings, or opting for less expensive transportation modes.

Management can implement similar cost-saving initiatives by outsourcing non-core work,

such as billing, accounting, financials, technology operations, and customer service.
Strategic partnerships needed for these initiatives are a part of business development.
Internship Report Title

∙ What Should a Business Developer Know?

Since business development involves high-level decision making, the business developer
should remain informed about the following:

The current state of the business in terms of SWOT analysis (strengths,

weaknesses, opportunities, and threats)

The current state of the overall industry and growth projections

Competitor developments

Primary sources of sales/revenues of current business and dependencies

The customer profile

New and unexplored market opportunities

Internship Report Title

New domains/products/sectors eligible for business expansion, which may complement

the existing business

∙ The Right Fit for Business Development

A business developer can be the business owner(s) or the designated employee(s)
working in business development. Anyone who can make or suggest a strategic business
change for a value-add to the business can contribute towards business development.
Businesses often encourage employees to brainstorm innovative ideas, which can help in
improving the potential of the overall business.

Businesses also seek help from external incubator firms, business development
companies (BDC), and small business development centers (SBDC). However, these
entities assist in business establishment and the necessary fine-tuning only during the
early stages of business setup.

∙ The Business Plan

The business development scenario discussed above is specific to a business expansion
plan, whose impact can be felt by almost every unit of the business. There can be similar
business development objectives, such as the development of a new business line, new
sales channel development, new product development, new partnerships in existing or
new markets, and even merger and acquisition (M&A) decisions.

For example, in the case of a merger, significant cost savings can be accomplished by
integrating the common functions of the manufacturing, finance, and legal departments of
the two firms. Similarly, a business operating from five different offices in a city can be
moved to a large central facility, resulting in significant operating cost savings. However,
would this lead to employee attrition, if the new location isn't convenient for everyone?
It's up to the business development team to assess such concerns.

In essence, business development involves high-level decision-making based on a

realistic assessment of all potential changes and their impact. Through new ideas and
initiatives, it aims to improve the overall business prospects, which drive the functioning
of the different business units. It is not sales; it is not marketing; it is not partnering.
Instead, it is the eco-system encompassing the entire business and its various divisions,
driving overall growth.

Fig.6

∙ Business Development Ethics

Business ethics involves implementing appropriate and fair practices regarding issues
such as corporate governance, insider trading, bribery, discrimination, corporate social
responsibility, and fiduciary responsibilities. Laws and regulations often set the standard
for business ethics, which companies can then choose to follow and build on in order to
earn trust and loyalty from consumers and market participants.

∙ Why Is New Business Development Important?

New business development is important for generating jobs, developing key industries,
and keeping the economy moving forward.

∙ What Are the Key Skills for Business Development Executives?

Development executives need to have leadership skills, vision, drive, and a willingness to
work with a variety of people to get to a common goal.

∙ What Should a Business Development Plan Include?

A business development plan, or business plan, describes what a business's objectives are
and how it intends to achieve them, including goals, start-up costs, and targeted
milestones.

∙ The Bottom Line

Business development may be difficult to define concisely, but it can be easily understood
using a working concept. An open mindset, willingness for an honest and realistic self-
assessment, and the ability to accept failures are a few of the skills needed for successful
business development. Beyond the ideation, implementation, and execution of a business
development idea, the end results matter the most.

The brightest minds in business development should be ready to accommodate a change

in order to achieve the best results. Every approval or disapproval is a learning
experience, better preparing these professionals for the next challenge.

Chapter 4.0: Reflection Notes (Specific outcomes)

Experience was amazing, got an opportunity to learn new things and also new skills like
leadership, time management, etc. Work Life Balance is my biggest problem during these
challenging times & one session has changed my entire thoughts. Now I am able to
manage my study and other works. Super77 taught me theories like 888 theory, U-turn
theory and many more. Applying these theories in life made me see a new perspective of
life, taught me a new way to approach my problems. I learned how to be happy and
content in every aspect of life. The way of teaching left a great impact on me. I learned
how to be a nice human being, a better way to live my life and many other important
lessons. I learned how to find the right direction.

∙ Verbal commination

Verbal communication skills are more important than ever. Countless meetings,
presentations, code reviews, conferences and networking events mean that clear and
assertive verbal communication are essential for current and future jobs.

Good communication skills can be the difference between getting a promotion or moving
laterally, selling your product or struggling with slow growth, influencing colleagues
with your idea or doing what you are told.

Communication skills are important to many aspects of your life and career, including:

Managerial role - how do you command respect from your colleagues while building a
strong culture and team spirit? How do you deal with an unexpected crisis and
communicate your action plan to your team? Oral communication skills are essential for
many areas of management.

Workplace success – you’ll frequently be talking to clients, customers, talking in team

meetings, requesting information, giving feedback and discussing problems. All require
strong communication skills so that you are understood clearly without any
misinterpretation.

Secure a new job – in employer surveys, oral communication skills consistently rank
amongst the top soft skills companies look for. They want new employees to be able to
speak clearly, concisely and confidently.

Advance your career – it’s important to be able to communicate your thoughts on how
the processes, products or services can be improved. Business value these skills in
management positions.

∙Storytelling

∙ Written communication

Written communications skills are those skills that use written words to deliver your
point. While it may have features similar to verbal communication skills, there are some
significant differences. Verbal communication relies on body language and your voice's
tone to deliver information. Written communication skills use grammar, punctuation and
words. For a written communication to be effective, ensure it is clear, concise, complete
and courteous. If you want to develop your written communication skills, you need to
practice writing and give attention to details.

∙ Core element of written communication skills

Internship Report Title

∙ Conciseness

The goal of every written communication is to get to the point quickly. It is essential to
include only relevant details to communicate your information effectively.

∙ Clarity

Clarity helps your readers understand the message you are trying to convey. By bringing
clarity to your writing, you reduce instances of misinformation, misconception,
miscommunication and mistakes. Clarity comes with using simple language and avoiding
complex words or sentence structures.

∙ Tone

The tone is the voice of your writing and conveys the emotions to the readers. For
business writing, use a professional tone with an appropriate degree of friendliness and
formality.

∙ Active Voice

Active voice uses action verbs that make your writing clearer, more accessible and
engaging to the readers. It is preferred over passive voice because active voice allows a
reader to move through your writing quickly. Active voice flows better and makes your
writing more persuasive. While passive voice finds its use in other forms of writing, in
professional communication, passive voice dilutes the content's action.

∙ Grammar and punctuation

Grammar and punctuation make your writing clear, engage your readers, avoid
miscommunication and make your communication effective. In professional
communication, grammar and punctuations help deliver correct information to the
readers.

∙ How to improve your written communication skills

∙ Know your goals

Having a clear goal helps in writing a clear and concise copy. Your goal may be to get
readers to respond to the email, make corrections in their work or pass on the information.
Irrespective of your goal, try conveying your goal at the beginning of the message. Every
written communication has a purpose and your writing must convey that purpose to the
readers. Explain clearly what you expect from the readers.
Internship Report Title

∙ Choose the right words and tone

Your word choice and writing tone make your writing compelling. Certain forms of
written communication, like proposals, require a formal tone. Using an informal tone in
such documents confuses the readers. Avoid using jargon, idioms, metaphors and fancy
words. Stick to simple business language because concise and clear written
communication delivers the right information.

∙ Use outlines

For longer-form content such as reports or newsletters, write an outline to organise your
thoughts. It ensures your work remains organised and focussed. Start by writing the
document's objective, followed by a list of main points you want to include. Outlines
provide a logical order to your written communication.

∙ Stay on the topic

Effective written communication is all about staying on topic. Avoid irrelevant

information. Before writing anything, ask yourself how it will help your readers. Clarity
is essential for increasing the reader's engagement with your writing. Try keeping your
paragraphs and sentences short because over-complicated sentences slow the reader
down. It is best to leave out words that shift your focus away from the main topic.

∙ Edit and revise

Read your document two or three times to ensure that it flows well, the writing makes
sense and is free from all unnecessary details. Apart from proofreading for grammatical
errors, give attention to how the document sounds. Also, look for visual styles, word
spacing and word division. Reread your document after some time to further eliminate
potential errors.

∙ Personality Development

Personality development is described as the process of improving and grooming one’s

outer and inner self in order to make a positive difference in one’s life. Each persona can
be honed, polished, and refined. Boosting one’s faith, strengthening speech and language
speaking ability, broadening one’s breadth of experience, cultivating certain interests or
talents, acquiring fine etiquettes and courtesy, bringing charm and elegance to the way
one dresses, speaks, and walks, and ultimately imbibing oneself with positivity,
liveliness, and harmony are all examples of this method. The entire development process
takes place over a period of time. Though there are many crash courses on personality
growth open to individuals of all ages, incorporating them into your daily life and
bringing about a meaningful shift in yourself takes time. It is not important to participate
in a personality

enhancement course; instead, one can pick up a few hints and develop one’s own aura or
charm. I also improve and development my personality.

∙ Keys to improve personality

∙ Confidence is the key!

That, indeed, is the secret. The most critical advice for personality growth is to be positive
about who you are and what you do. Never question your ability, and if there is anything
you need to change, give it your best so you can conquer your doubts and gain trust.
Learn success stories or fill yourself with motivational thoughts or “encouragements” to
help you gain self-esteem and grow a charismatic personality. Have trust in yourself and
bring in the effort in everything you do. There is nothing more appealing in a person’s
personality than a high level of self-assurance.

∙ Be You!
Though you should always look up to others for inspiration, you should always stay true
to yourself. Trying to be someone else takes you nowhere and backfires. Trying too hard
to blend in with a new community or a need to join can never detract from your
uniqueness and validity. Instead of trying to change into something else, focus on being
the better version of yourself.

∙ Dress to Impress!
While we will not suggest that emphasising your outer self above your talents and
abilities is important, but one’s clothing does play a part in leaving a positive impact. Not
just that, but recognising that you look fine and are dressed appropriately gives you a
boost of confidence. Dress in a respectful way and be mindful of your surroundings.
Though bright colours and excessive tattoos or piercings give off an unprofessional vibe,
perfectly ironed clothes make you seem presentable.

∙ Watch Your Body Language!

Your body language is almost as important as your verbal communication skills in
determining your personality. It shows a lot about you and facilitates others in making
correct decisions about you. Anything you do, such as how you walk, sit, speak, or eat,
has an effect on the people around you, and using the right body language will make a
huge difference in your personality. Walk with your head straight and your spine straight.
Don’t let your head droop. Maintain a calm stance when speaking and maintain regular
eye contact.

∙ Positivity

In order to have an appealing personality, all the feelings and behaviour must be
constructive. The way we think has a significant impact on how we behave. And
cultivating optimistic thinking inside one’s mind boosts one’s self-confidence and

improves one’s personality. Life’s conditions and events will be full of rises and lows at
any moment. However, in order to have a better perspective on life, you must strive at the
lighter side of things and concentrate on the positive aspects.

∙ Time Management

Time management skills are those that help you use your time effectively and
achieve desired results. Time management skills can help you allocate your time
properly and accomplish tasks efficiently.

Some of the most important skills related to successful time management skills
include:

∙ Organisation

Staying organised helps you to keep track of your responsibilities and priorities, like what
you need to do first and when to do the rest of it. An organised list of tasks acts as a map
to guide you from morning to evening and helps increase your productivity. A well-
organised plan helps you break down large goals into smaller, easily achievable tasks and
enables you to complete those tasks on time.

∙ Prioritisation

Prioritisation is the key to successful time management. When you prioritise your daily
tasks, you ensure that you will complete the important tasks first. Write down every
single task starting with the top priority. For instance, you can break down your tasks as
the following:

A-level tasks: Things that will lead to major consequences if not done today

B-level tasks: Activities that may have a negative effect if not completed today

C-level tasks: Activities that have no consequence if not completed today.

∙ Goal setting

Goal setting is the process of defining your aims and objectives with a certain plan to help
you achieve the set goals. Setting goals is a key step in excelling as a professional.
Without goals, you may find it challenging to complete your tasks in a well-organised
manner. Setting both short- and long-term goals can lead to success in your career.
An example of a short-term goal may be to increase sales in your department by 40%.
A long-term goal could be something like completing law school or starting your own
business.

∙ Communication

Communication skills are a major component of success in life. Effective communication

promotes trust and makes your plans and goals clear to people you work with. It plays a
crucial role in resolving conflicts and preventing potential conflict situations. Strong
communication helps you delegate more work, which lets you focus more on the
important tasks that support your goals.

∙ Planning

Planning is the core of time management. With a proper plan, you can prioritise your
tasks accordingly, which can help avoid confusion and unnecessary stress. A planned
work schedule helps you complete the tasks in the given time frame. For example, a plan
for a project manager might include ordering supplies, scheduling labour, acquiring the
proper permits and so on.

∙ Delegation

It is an important process to manage multiple tasks satisfactorily. While managing a

project, you can delegate some of the tasks to your subordinates. This will help in
reducing your workload so that you can focus more on important tasks, such as planning,
business analysis and others.

∙ Stress management

Positively handling stress keeps you motivated and helps you complete tasks at the
scheduled time against all adversities. Exercise, yoga or having snacks during breaks can
help you reduce stress. In fact, including stress-relieving activities or self-care rituals into
your daily schedule can positively impact your productivity on work-related tasks
throughout the day.

∙ Flexibility

It's vital that you maintain some flexibility in your schedule. Often, a task will take longer
than you expect or your supervisor will give you a priority task you weren't expecting.
Clearly note in your daily schedule where you have space to adjust in preparation for last-
minute changes.
