INTRODUCTION
DTH
DTH stands for Direct-To-Home television. DTH is defined as the reception
of satellite programmes with a personal dish in an individual home.
DTH does away with the need for the local cable operator and puts the
broadcaster directly in touch with the consumer. Only cable operators can
receive satellite programmes and they then distribute them to individual
homes.
WORKING
The way DTH reaches a consumer's home is different from the way cable
TV does. In DTH, TV channels would be transmitted from the satellite to a
small dish antenna mounted on the window or rooftop of the subscriber's
home. So the broadcaster directly connects to the user. The middlemen like
local cable operators are not there in the picture.
AIRTEL DIGITAL TV
Bharti Telemedia Limited, doing business as Airtel Digital TV, is
an Indian direct-broadcast satellite service provider owned and
operated by Bharti Airtel.[4] Its satellite service, launched in October
2008, transmits digital satellite television and audio to households in
India.[5] It has a total subscriber base of 10.07 million as of 30 March
2015.[6][7] Airtel Digital TV's standard-definition broadcasts are in
MPEG-4 with Interactive Service and 7-day Electronic Programme
Guide.[10] A universal remote is included in the package that can,
over IR frequencies, control both the TV and the DTH box.[11][12] Airtel
Digital TV HD provides channels of resolution 1080p pixel with a
16:9 aspect ratio. The set-top box is compatible with 7.1
Channel Dolby digital Plus surround sound and is the first HD set-
top box in India to be compliant with the standard.[13] Airtel Digital TV
provides on-demand services on connected boxes that includes a
catalog of movies, TV series and other programmes
across English and various Indian languages.[14] It also offers
interactive services such as iDarshan, iKidsworld, iMusicspace and
games.[15][16] On 4 May 2010, Airtel digital TV announced the launch
of its HD+ recorder.[8] On 24 May 2011, Airtel announced that its
digital TV HD and HD-DVR boxes are software-enabled to
view standard-definition (SD) content up-scaled to 1080i HD.[9]
TATA SKY
Tata Play (stylised as TΛTΛ PLΛY, formerly Tata Sky) is an Indian direct
broadcast satellite (DTH) service provider using MPEG-4 digital
compression technology, transmitting using INSAT-4A and GSAT-
10 satellite.[1] Incorporated in 2005; it currently offers a total of 601
channels, 495 SD channels and 99 HD channels and services, along with
many other value added services. As of March 2020, according
to TRAI Tata Play serves 22 million subscribers which is 33.37% of
total DTH users in India. Tata Play is the largest DTH service provider in
India.
Tata Play entered into an agreement with French firm Technicolor to
supply 4K set top boxes from early 2015.[2]
Tata Sky was an equity strategic alliance in the nature of a joint venture
between the Tata Group and 21st Century Fox, which owned 80% and
20% stakes respectively[3] until 2008, when Singapore-based Temasek
Holdings picked up a 10% stake in Tata Play from the Tata Group. Tata
Sky was incorporated in 2001, but launched services on 8 August 2006.[4]
Tata Sky's parent company, 21st Century Fox, formerly owned an
international group of DTH businesses that include Sky
Italia in Italy and Sky UK in the United Kingdom. The company uses the
Sky brand under a licence from Sky Group.[5]
Tata Sky partnered with Ericsson to launch the first Video on
Demand (VOD) services in India in 2012.[6]
On 9 January 2015, Tata Sky became the first Indian DTH operator to
offer 4K set-top-boxes to its consumers.[7][8][9]
On 20 March 2019, The Walt Disney Company completed acquisition
of 21st Century Fox, making them their new 30% stakeholder, replacing
21st Century Fox.[10]
On 26 January 2022, Tata Sky was rebranded into Tata Play as the
company decided to drop the 'Sky' brand name after 15 years.[11]
SUNDIRECT
Sun Direct is an Indian direct broadcast satellite service provider. Sun
Direct was launched in December 2007.[2] It transmits digital satellite
television and audio to households in India. Sun Direct uses MPEG-
4 digital compression, transmitting HD Channels on GSAT-15 at 93.5°E
and SD Channels on MEASAT-3 at 91.5°E.[3] Sun Direct currently offers
total 465 channels and services, along with many other active services. It is
the first and No.1 service provider to launch HD Counterpart. Sun Direct is
a joint venture between the Sun Group of India and the Astro Group
of Malaysia. Sun Group entered into an MoU with the Astro group on 27
January 1997, when Aircel was not in existence, but since the government
of India did not allow the use of KU band transponders for DTH services
the project was put on hold, the firm said in a statement. After the DTH
policy was announced by the government in December 2007, Astro picked
up a 20% stake in Sun Direct TV, the stake was valued at approximately
$115 million.[4] Sun Direct TV was registered on 16 February 2005.
[5]
However, the failed launch of Sun Direct INSAT 4C resulted in Sun
Direct lack of transponders, delaying the launch.[6] The service was finally
launched on 18 Jan 2008 after availability of transponders from INSAT 4B.
[7]
Sun Direct spread rapidly all over the country owing to lowest pricing of any
DTH services in India. In December 2009, Sun Direct was launched
in Mumbai, country's financial capital and announced its pan India launch.
By 2009 it became the leading DTH provider with 3 million subscribers.
[8]
This makes it the second largest DTH service provider of India. In April
2010 Sun Direct became the No.1 DTH service provider of India with 5.8
million subscribers and soon launched its HD service in India.
As of March 2021, Sun Direct crossed the 23 million subscriber mark.
COMPARITIVE SEGMENTS
REVENUE- In accounting, revenue is the total amount of income generated by the sale of goods
and services related to the primary operations of the business. [1] Commercial revenue may also
be referred to as sales or as turnover. Some companies receive revenue
from interest, royalties, or other fees.[2] "Revenue" may refer to income in general, or it may refer
to the amount, in a monetary unit, earned during a period of time, as in "Last year, Company X
had revenue of $42 million". Profits or net income generally imply total revenue minus total
expenses in a given period. In accounting, in the balance statement, revenue is a subsection of
the Equity section and revenue increases equity, it is often referred to as the "top line" due to its
position on the income statement at the very top. This is to be contrasted with the "bottom line"
which denotes net income (gross revenues minus total expenses).[3]
In general usage, revenue is the total amount of income generated by the sale of goods or
services related to the company's primary operations Sales revenue is income received from
selling goods or services over a period of time. Tax revenue is income that a government
receives from taxpayers. Fundraising revenue is income received by a charity from donors etc. to
further its social purposes.
For example, it can be shown as the amount of money a company brings in (revenue) from its
consumers, divided by the total amount of money paid from all consumers for that service or
product.
It can also be shown as the amount of products/services sold ('unit sales volume') by a
company divided by the total volume sold to all the consumers in that market.
It is necessary to commission (hire) market research (generally desk/secondary research,
although sometimes primary research) to estimate the total market size and a company's
market share.
Increasing market share is one of the most important objectives in business. The main
advantage of using market share is that it removes the effects of industry-
wide macroenvironmental variables such as the state of the economy, or changes in tax
policy. For example, if you were one of only two psychiatrists in Chicago, then it would not
matter how bad the economy was because you would always have a huge slice of the
consumer-base "pie" for your service. If your service was less needed, then advertising more
would help increase your market share.
The market shares for different companies tends to change over time, causing change in the
market share values; the reason can be political ups and downs, a disaster, etc
SHARE PRICE
A share price is the price of a single share of a number of saleable equity shares of a
company. In layman's terms, the stock price is the highest amount someone is willing to pay
for the stock, or the lowest amount that it can be bought for. In economics and financial
theory, analysts use random walk techniques to model behavior of asset prices, in particular
share prices on stock markets. This practice has its basis in the presumption that investors
act rationally and without biases, and that at any moment they estimate the value of an asset
based on future expectations. Under these conditions, all existing information affects the
price, which changes only when new information comes out. By definition, new information
appears randomly and influences the asset price randomly.
Empirical studies have demonstrated that prices do not completely follow random walks.
[1]
Low serial correlations (around 0.05) exist in the short term, and slightly stronger
correlations over the longer term. Their sign and the strength depend on a variety of factors.
Researchers have found that some of the biggest price deviations from random walks result
from seasonal and temporal patterns. In particular, returns in January significantly exceed
those in other months (January effect) and on Mondays stock prices go down more than on
any other day. Observers have noted these effects in many different markets for more than
half a century, but without succeeding in giving a completely satisfactory explanation for their
persistence

Tata Sky has extended its lead at the top with a market share of 32.58%. Tata
Sky ended the Q1 FY21 with 32.09% share, and it has been increased to 32.58% at
the end of September 2020. The second-largest DTH operator continues to be Dish
TV. However, unlike Tata Sky, Dish TV lost its market share. The remaining two
service providers- Airtel Digital TV and Sun Direct also increased their market
share marginally. The total active Pay DTH subscriber base has increased from
70.58 million in June 2020 to 70.70 million in September 2020. A year ago
(September 30, 2019), the total active Pay DTH subscriber base used to be 69.30
million, which saw a slight increase to 70.70 million.
