GLASS
OPTICAL AND THERMAL PERFORMANCE
CUSTOMER : ADVANCED ALUMINIUM SYSTEM :
PROJECT :
DOUBLE GLAZED UNIT
6mm Clear Float Glass
12mm Air Space
6mm Clear Float Glass
NOTES
The above data has been estimated and approximated from computer analysis on the LBNL Window v7.3.8.0 Fenestration Product Thermal Analysis
Program and Optics 6.
The above performance figures are related to glass (center) only with no spacer or framing.
The considered environmental condition: NFRC 100-2010 (outside air temperature 32○C \ inside air temperature 24○C).
Performances scheduled may vary from actual depending on manufacturers permitted variations in color and coatings.
EXPLANATION OF TERMS
Light = (visible) radiant energy covering wavelength range of 380 nm to 780 nm:
% Transmission = percentage of visible light directly transmitted through the glass
% Reflection Outdoors = percentage of outdoor visible light directly reflected from the glass back outdoors
% Reflection Indoors = percentage of indoor visible light directly reflected from the glass back indoors
Solar Energy = radiant energy from the sun having a wavelength range of 300 nm to 2500 nm at an air mass of 1.0, global.
% Transmission = percentage of solar energy directly transmitted through the glass
% Reflection Outdoors = percentage of solar energy directly reflected from the glass back outdoors.
Shading coefficient (SC) is the ratio of solar heat gain passing through a particular product compared to 3-mm clear glass under the same conditions.
The lower the SC, the better the glasses ability to reduce summer heat gain and, therefore, reduce air- conditioning costs. Clear glass has the highest
SC, followed in general by tinted glass; pyrolytic coated glass, then sputter-coated glass and Heat Mirror™. Glass with a SC approaching 1.0 obviously
has a close heat gain characteristic to 3-mm clear glass.
U-Value is the overall coefficient of heat transmission due only to a difference in indoor and outdoor air temperatures. The lower the ‘U’ value, the
less heat is transmitted through a material in a given time for a given temperature difference. ‘U’ value is expressed in terms of Btu/hr ft² °F or
W/m². °C.
ASHRAE ‘U’ values are expressed for two different sets of environmental conditions:
Summer ‘U’- outside air temperature 32°C, inside air temperature 24°C, wind speed 3.4 m/sec; direct solar intensity 783 W/m².
Winter ‘U’ - outside air temperature -17°C, inside air temperature 24°C, wind speed 6.7 m/sec, direct solar intensity zero.
European calculated U-Values are similar to ASHRAE winter except the outdoor air temperature allowed for is 0°C having the effect that the
ASHRAE winter ‘U’ value for the same product will register slightly lower.
Relative Heat Gain (RHG): gives the design professional a ready guide in reviewing comparative glass types as to their performance to reduce cooling
costs.
The ASHRAE standard RHG is calculated using both SC and ‘U’ value for a standard set of environmental conditions:
RHG = (SC*630) + (U-Value summer *7.8)
