communicate clearly and express themselves Students should be able to retell one of
creatively for a variety of purposes using the Aesop’s fables we previously read, determine
platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital elements of culture, central message or
media appropriate to their goals lesson in that fable, and use what they know
to write their own adaptation of the fable of
their choice and then use Microsoft
PowerPoint to create an animated digital
book of their story.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can write my own adaptation of one of Aesop’s fables and create a digital story book for my
fable using Microsoft PowerPoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom

blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will plan for my students to create a digital storybook using Microsoft PowerPoint. This will
be implemented in the unit for standard ELAGSE3RL2: Recount stories, including fables,
folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral
and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. In this unit we will have
already read some of Aesop’s fables and discussed the elements of these fables in lessons, so
the children are becoming familiar with these stories. I will introduce some the of stories to
them as traditional books and some of the stories as eBooks so that they are also familiar
with what eBooks look like. I picture myself using Microsoft PowerPoint often in the
classroom during lessons so I will introduce to my students that they will be using Microsoft
PowerPoint to create their own eBooks like the ones we’ve seen in previous lessons and then
I will follow up with creating my own example eBook with Microsoft PowerPoint with the
class to serve as the example and as an introductory tutorial for how to use the software.

The lesson goals and goal for the assignment will be communicated verbally and displayed
visually on the board, and we will spend a short moment discussing as a class what the
students think the lesson goal means and putting it into their own words to ensure everyone
understands the goals. The students will be guided through the planning and creating process
from mapping out their story to utilizing the technology to work independently while I as the
teacher guide their steps and check in frequently with what they have done, what they will
do next and how they will do this so that they are working on their own, but they have the
teacher guided support necessary to be successful. I will do this by floating around and
checking on everyone’s work as well as by conducting individual meetings to give feedback
throughout the creating process and support them as they develop their eBooks with
suggestions, advice and showing them how to use the software. When they finish their eBook
we will conclude with having students share with the class and receive constructive feedback
from peers as well as from the teacher.

Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?

Students will work in pairs to co-engage with the software and collaborate to create their
eBooks. As I float around to assist students and check in on their progress I will make sure I
bring their attention back to the learning goal by reading It aloud and directing their focus to
where it is visually posted in the room for them to look at whenever they need to. I will ask

specific questions in order to guide their thinking and work towards the learning goal such as:
“how will you include this element in your story?” “How do you think you could convey this
lesson in your story?” “Let’s think about how Aesop communicated this idea to his readers,
how do you think you could do that with your story?” “How would you like to show this
element in your story? How do you think we can use one of the tools in Microsoft PowerPoint
to do that?”. By doing this I can make sure the students thinking is on task and that they are
working towards the learning goals of the lesson as well as offer advice for how they can
utilize more tools in Microsoft PowerPoint they may not have used yet to make their eBook
even better and provide them an opportunity to explore more features in the program.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

By using Microsoft PowerPoint, we make information accessible and give students the
opportunity to show learning through visual and auditory means as well as the ability to add
captions for other languages to support ELL students. Students have options for means of
navigation, accessing tools and assistive technology and mode of physical response to engage
with the technology and lesson content in the way that they choose that best works for
them, allowing us to reach all students. This lesson using Microsoft PowerPoint also allows
students the option of choice of fable according to their interest and opportunity for means
of developing self-regulation and executive function through working independently with the
assistance and guidance of the teacher so that they are supported appropriately while also
able to work at their own pace

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

This lesson idea supports learning in all tiers of Blooms Taxonomy; Remembering,
Understanding, Applying, Evaluating and Creating. Not only will students more deeply
understand the content they are learning through meaningful engagement with technology,
but they will be applying what they learn to creating something new as they explore and
navigate the presentation program they are using. I look forward to using lessons such as this
one to encourage developing technology skills and foster the development of students who
are able to work independently and practice executive function by taking more active roles in
their learning.
