Lesson Idea Name: How can we help our environment every day?
Grade Level/Content Area: 3rd Grade Science

Content Standard Addressed: S3L2: ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
1.7 Global Collaborator: 1.7.b. Students use able to do by the end of this lesson:
collaborative technologies to work with others, 1. Students will be able to describe how humans
including peers, experts or community members, harm and help the environment around us.
to examine issues and problems from multiple 2. Students will be able to identify ways we can

3. Students will be able to utilize technology to
further their understanding of a topic at a
unique pace and collaborate with peers about
the issue.
What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?
The students will be able to identify ways they can help the environment we live in given their new
understanding of human impacts.

One way I will promote higher levels of critical thinking in this lesson is by instructing students to
come up with their own ways to reduce pollution in their own lives/at home.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

To begin the lesson the teacher will ask the class to share with each other what they know about

pollution and how it is affecting the earth we live in. The teacher will listen and then inform the
students that today they will be learning about the many ways humans impact the world around us.
Students will be grouped into groups of 3-4 and each group will be given a laptop with a Padlet page
pulled up of an interactive lesson for the students to actively engage in. After each activity, video, or
informational piece students will be asked a question such as if they have every experienced
something like what happened in the video or if they could think of a better way to fix the issue
stated. At the end of the lesson the students will participate in a Flippity quiz that will reward them
with a certificate at the end. After each group has received their certificate, we will regroup, and the
students will tell the teacher what they learned and how they can make a positive impact in the
environment we live in.
Managing student learning:
Students will be actively learning throughout this activity because they are not simply reading about
pollution and human impact in a textbook. The students are given an abundance of interactive
activities such as short videos, games, and clickable information. The students are also working in
groups and must collaborate with one another to complete the activities.
When students have been working through the Padlet for a while and seem to get off task the
teacher will ask the students to pause and tell the class what they have learned so far.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
This activity supports engagement because of the interactive Padlet page, and the students are also
able to work through the activities at their own pace with their peers. They also will have plenty of
time to collaborate not only with each other, but with their teacher to encourage confidence in their
learning.
Reflective Practice:
I believe this tool will help students build and understanding in a way they could not with traditional
tools because it is not whole group discussion with pencil and paper. Some students do not enjoy
taking notes and learning out of a textbook or writing notes about a video. By implementing these
technologies students are actively engaged with one another and can think about ways they can
help their environment after watching and collaborating with each other about what they just
learned. I look forward to the students using the interactive page together and listening to them
discuss the ways they will positively impact their environment.
