Lesson Idea Name: Phases of The Moon

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd Grade Science

Content Standard Addressed:

S2E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to develop an understanding of the patterns of
the sun and the moon and the sun’s effect on Earth.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be

1.2 Digital Citizen representation of the phases of the moon in order.
Students recognize the rights, responsibilities,
and opportunities of living, learning, and working
in an interconnected digital world, and they act
and model in ways that are safe, legal, and
ethical.

1.3 Knowledge Constructor

Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge,
produce creative artifacts and make meaningful
learning experiences for themselves and others.

1.4 Innovative Designer

Students use a variety of technologies within a
design process to identify and solve problems by
creating new, useful, or imaginative solutions.

1.5 Computational Thinker

Students develop and employ strategies for
understanding and solving problems in ways that
leverage the power of technological methods to
develop and test solutions.
1.6 Creative Communicator
Students communicate clearly and express
themselves creatively for a variety of purposes
using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and
digital media appropriate to their goals.

1.7 Global Collaborator

Students use digital tools to broaden their
perspectives and enrich their learning by
collaborating with others and working effectively
in teams locally and globally.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to explore the content in the Padlet to control their own learning. They learn the
moon phases, how the sun and the moon effect the moon phases and create a representation of how
the moon phases are ordered.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating

☒ Creating

Students will be given time to create their own representation of the phases of the moon in this lesson.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying  the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class,  or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will start by students activating prior knowledge, using their Padlet access. They will then
watch a Phases of The Moon video on Brain Pop and review the vocabulary and write/ voice record
the words in their own way. Next, they will explore learning a little more, writing what they think the
sun and the moon’s position have to do with moon phases. They will get creative by posting a funny
and appropriate Gif of how they thought people related when there was a new moon (aka no moon)
and creating a rap verse using the information they have learned thus far. Their assessment will be a
playing a game of Kahoot! to review and finally, representing all the phases of the moon using Oreos.
All students will have access to the Padlet in the classroom but can also access outside with they
would like. Link to Padlet: https://padlet.com/kstgerma/m453qxu2hisaymh0
Managing student learning:

The Padlet they will use Padlet to become active and social learners instead of passive learners. They
will be given the opportunity to interact with tools online and their peers, simultaneously. I will give
students a time limit of an hour to explore the features, watch videos, and complete their activities;
they will be given more time if needed. The Kahoot! will be included in this time. They will receive
another 30 minutes to complete the representation activity using Oreos. Students will use Padlet to
complete all the activities and will be able to interact with their peer through the duration of the
lesson. Students who want to share their work will be able to and I will reengage students every 5
minutes or so to see where they are with their learning and “pull them back in.”

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson supports engagement by providing a variety of activities that appeal to student’s interests.
They can respond to learning trough videos, voice recording, pictures, drawing, gifs, links, etc. This
lesson will support all engagement, representation, and expression of their learning.

Reflective Practice:

I believe this will help students build understanding through engaging and hands on activities and
interaction with their peers. I look forward to the Oreo phases of the moon portion of this lesson!
