1.2 Chapter 2: Asia

Asia is the world’s largest continent in the world and the birthplace of world’s major religions such as
Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Shintoism, Confucianism, and
Taoism(Daoism). This culturally diverse continent is composed of various regions namely: Southeast
Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, Northern Asia, and Western Asia. Despite the recognizable
differences in culture, there are similarities in values, beliefs, social etiquette, religious practices and
languages that are shared by the countries in each region.

Kingdom of Thailand was formerly called Siam.Bangkok is named by its people as Krung Thep or “the
City of Angels”. The region is the home of the UNESCO’s World Heritage site, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya
Historical Park located in the city Ayutthaya. The country is divided into six regions;
• Northeast Region is the home of the Khmer temple complex, Phanom rung;
• North Region where the country’s tallest peak, Doi Inthanon is found;
• Central Region is where the capital Bangkok lies one of the major destinations showaing Thailand’s
historical attractions, temples and shopping centers.
• South Region offers wonderful beaches and islands such as the Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi

• Eastern Region is an amalgam of ocean and mountain while West Region is known for its national
parks like Thong Pha Phum National park and Mueang Sing Historical Park.
Thai people express their warm greeting by saying “Sawasdee” accompanied by wai, a traditional way of
greeting in Thailand. To make it sound more polite the word “Khrap” (for male) or “Kha: (for female) is added at
the end.
Food plays a vital role in the Thai culture and has been part of the country’s hospitality industry. Its
distinct taste makes it more appealing. Some of the must try foods are som tam, tom yum goong, pad thai and
kao phad(fried rice).
Some of the recommended tourist attractions and activities in Thailand are;
• Visiting the Thai Grand Palace and floating market;
• Taking cruise at Chao Phraya River;
• Riding the country’s transportation “tuk-tuk”;
• Trying an elephant ride;
• Bargain shopping at Chatuchak;
• Going for a Thai Massage.

Nihon or Nippon also known as the “Land of the Rising Sun” is divided into eight regions: Kanto, Chubu ,
Hokkaido, Kansai , Kyushu, Shikuko, Chugoku and Tohoku. Tokyo the country’s capital is situated in the
region of Kanto. The bustling capital of the country is the home to many of the most attractive tourist places
such as;
• Ginza District a shopping district consisting of luxury brands;
• The Imperial Palace which serves as the house of the Imperial family;
• Tokyo Skytree the tallest skyscraper in Japan
• Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea which are popular theme parks in Tokyo.
Japan has four seasons, which are spring, winter, summer and fall. Spring (March to May) is the season
to view the cherry blossom (Sakura). Winter(December to February) is the perfect time to visit Japan’s ski
destinations and to experience onsen (hot spring). Summer (June to mid September) is the best time to
observe Japan’s festivals such as the Gion Festival in Kyoto festival registered in UNESCO intangible cultural
heritage. Fall (September to November) is a good time to see the country covered with colorful leaves.

Republic of Singapore is an island nation found in the south of Peninsular Malaysia. Its name originated
from the word “Singapura”, a word derived from the Sanskrit “simha” (lion) and “pura” (city) or “The Lion City”.
This highly developed city-state offers remarkable tourist destinations like:
• Its landmark , the “merlion” , a half-lion and half-fish mythical creature is an iconic attraction;
• Night safari is the first nocturnal zoo in the world;
• Jurong bird park , river safari, Singapore zoo and S.E.A Aquarium are attractions that will be enjoyed by
those wildlife lovers.
A taste of Singapore can be experienced in the hawker center. This vibrant food center provides flavors
of Singapore. Some of the recommended foods to try include the country’s national dish which is the chicken
rice, chili crab, laksa, nasi lemak and roti prata.
Locals may refer to the common language as “Singlish” a mixture of Singaporean and English spoken by
the locals in the country. Some of the Singlish phrases are;
• “Chope”, used to reserve a seat
• “Lah” or “Leh” used at the end of conversation like “Go home lah,can?” meaning “Just go home
now,ok?”

Republic of China (ROC) was formerly known as “Formosa” which means “beautiful”. It is surrounded by
Japan in the north and Philippines in the south. Taiwan is a country that put high respect to various religious
practices. Taipei the capital is situated in the northern part of the country. It houses major tourist attractions
such as:
• Taipei 101 the country’s tallest skyscraper;
• National Museum of History which showcases Taiwan’s Historical Treasures;
• National Palace Museum which exhibits Chinese imperial arts and artifacts collections;
• National Taiwan Museum
Taiwan is also famous for its pearl milk tea or bubble tea, a drink composed of black teas, pearls, and
milk. Taiwan’s teas include black, oolong , white and green tea.

while the capital’s name derived from the word “Al Manama”, which means “place of rest”. Dressing modestly
is observed in the country. Abaya is worn by women and thob is for men.

• Qala’at Al-Bahrain (Bahrain Fort) a UNESCO World Heritage site;
• A Adhari Park an amusement park;
• Al Areen Wildlife park and reserve;
• Al Fateh Grand Mosque.

Republic of the Philippines is divided into three major island groups: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Filipinos are described as hospitable and fun-loving people. Religion has a great influence in the country’s
festival or “fiestas”.
Some of the must-experience festivals are:
• Feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila;
• Sinulog Festival in Cebu – honors the Senor Santo Nino;
• Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo, Aklan – celebrated in honor of Infant Jesus;
• Dinagyang Festival in Ilo-ilo;
• Obando Festival in Obando,Bulacan – honoring St. Paschal ( for couples who want a male child) St.
Claire (for couples who want a female child) and Our Lady of Salambaw (patroness of fishermen);
• Moriones Festival in Marinduque – celebrated during Holy Week;
• Pahiyas Festival in lucban, Quezon – honors the patron saint of farmers.
Philippines is also rich in natural and man-made attractions such as:
• Country’s best beaches Boracay,Aklan; El Nido,Palawan; Pagudpud,Ilocos Norte; Panglao,Bohol;
Camiguin Island,Camiguin; Mactan,Cebu and Pearl Farm Davao
• UNESCO World Heritage sites: Banaue Rice Terraces, Ifugao Province,Cordillera; Puerto Princesa
Subterranean River National Park, Palawan; Historic City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur; Church of San Agustin, Paoay,
Ilocos Norte; Nuestra Senora dela Asuncion in Sta Maria, Ilocos Sur and Santo Tomas de Villanueva Church in
Miag-ao, Iloilo.

(Socialist Republic of Vietnam) established in 1976, lies in the eastern most part of mainland Southeast
Asia. It is divided into three economic zones namely: the Northern Vietnam, Central Vietnam and Southern
Vietnam. Hanoi is the gateway to view the natural beauty of the North Vietnam including the world Heritage site
of Halong Bay located in the gulf of Tonkin. Central Vietnam is notable for Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park,
The Complex of Hue Monuments, My Son Sanctuary and Nah Trang beaches. Southern Vietnam allows you to
have a glimpse of the past. Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum, and Cu Chi Tunnels are some of its
attractions.
Vietnamese culture is influenced by Chinese culture. Respect for the family values is still evident despite
foreign colonial rule. Part of the major cultural celebrations in the Vietnam are the Birthday of Buddha, the Mid-
Autumn Lantern Festival and the Lunar New Year or Tet. The people of Vietnam place great value on modesty
and humility. They are conservative who are not pleased to see people displaying their affection in public.
As a tourist, it is important to show respect by:
• Not refusing a gift, it is a sign of respect;
• Using both hands when you give something to someone;
• Avoiding pointing of fingers;
• Taking your shoes off when entering someone’s home.
Vietnamese Cuisine is a combination of Chinese and Thai techniques. Rice is Vietnam’s staple food
while Pho is the famous dish. Pho is a noodle soup that is composed of rice noodle, broth (chicken or beef)
and vegetables.
Here are some of the useful Vietnamese phrases:
• Hello – Xin chao (Sin chow!)
• How are you? – Khoe Khong? (Kweh kohng?)
• I’m fine, Thank you – Khoe, cam on (kweh, gauhm uhhn)
• Thank You – Cam on (gauhm uhhn)
• I’m Sorry – Toi xin loi (sin loy)
• Good bye – Tam biet (tam byet)
• Yes – Vang (vuhng)
• No – Khong (kaumng)

Federation of Malaysia is divided into West and East Malaysia. West Malaysia is situated in the southern
tip of the Malaysian Peninsula. It is bordered by Thailand in the north and Singapore in the south. Also, it is
where the capital Kuala Lumpur sits. The Peninsula houses various modern historical and cultural attractions
such as:
• Petronas Tower the tallest twin towers in the world;
• Lego Land a themed park in Johor Bahru;
• Genting Highlands an entertainment destination;
• The historic city of Melaka and George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site;
• Batu Caves a sacred Hindu shrine in Malaysia
East Malaysia can be found in the island of Borneo, bordered by Indonesia in the south and Brunei in the
north. The states of Sarawak and Sabah are situated in the Island. It boasts its UNESCO World Heritage sites
such as Kinabalu Park and Gunung Mulu National Park.
Malay, Chinese and Indian are the three major ethnic groups of the country.
Other Traditions to be observed by the visitors are;
• Greeting “Salam: which is their traditional way of greeting;
• Removing of shoes when entering a Malaysian home
• Avoiding using the right forefinger to point a person, place and objects.
Food is an essential part of the country’s culture, some of the must try Malay cuisine are char kway teow
(stir fried rice cake strips), laksa, roti, nasi lemak and rendang.
Some of the Malaysia phrases that can be found useful are;
• Good morning – selamat pagi
• Good Afternoon – selamat tenga hari
• Goodbye – selamat tinggal
• Thank you – terima kasih
• Welcome – selamat dating

(Kingdom of Cambodia) is the home of the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The archaeological park houses the magnificent architectural and aesthetic works during Khmer Empire
including the world’s largest religious complex, Angkor Wat.
Tourism in Phnom Penh is growing and developing. The popular tourist attractions are mainly historical
and cultural such as:
• Wat Moha Montrei, a temple built in 1970 situated in the capital of the country;
• Independence Monument, a statue that commemorates Cambodia’s Independence from France in
1953;
• The Royal Palace, the King’s royal residence.
Khmer is the official language, while English is commonly spoken in the hospitality industry and in
business. Sampeah is a gesture showing respect. It is used for greeting, thanking and apologizing. It is done
by placing both palms together in front of chest. There are levels in performing sampeah: chest level is used to
greet friends or similar age; mouth level is for teacher, bosses, or high ranking individuals; nose level is for
parents or grandparents; eyebrow level is for kings and monks and forehead level is for God and sacred
statues.

Republic of India is the largest of the eight countries in South Asia it occupied a huge portion of the
region. The national capital of India is New Delhi which can be accessed through the Indira Gandhi
International Airport. India is the birthplace of Buddhism, great epics such as Mahabharata and Ramayana and
Mahatma Gandhi, India’s great political and spiritual leader known for his nonviolent independence movement.
High respect for all the belief systems can be seen in most of the country’s festivals, such as Diwali
(Deepavali) known as Festivals of Lights which is considered to be the most significant celebration in India
practiced by Hindus and non-Hindus. Ramadan or Eid-Ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims, Christmas is
celebrated in commemoration of the birth if Jesus Christ , Ganesh Chaturthi Festival is a dedicated to honor
Lord Ganesh and Budh Poornima is a celebration for the birth of Buddha.
Some of the UNESCO World Heritage sites to visit are:
• Taj Mahal – a white marble mausoleum for Taj Mahal, the wife of emperor Shan Jahan;
• Agra Fort – this historical fort served as the residence of the Mughal emperors;
• Historic City oof Ahmadabad – this walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage site that was founded by
Sultan Ahmad Shah;
• Churches and Convents of Goa – composed of Roman Catholic spiritual edifices;
• Ellora Caves – large sacred rock- cut temples;
• Jaipur City – a city known as “Pink City”
