DOWTY PROPELLERS STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL

NDT 3DAP
NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING INSPECTION OF
GROUND CHROMIUM PLATED PARTS

1. General

A. This specification details the procedure for the inspection of the ground areas of chromium plating
for grinding abuse of the chrome and of the steel substrate. Prior to plating the parts will have been
acid etch inspected to NDT 6DAP and magnetic flaw detected to NDT 2DAP.

B. Where grinding of the chromium plate produces damage to the steel substrate such that cracking
takes place, the cracking may often be detected by magnetic flaw detection as detailed in Part 4
Procedure 1 of this specification.

C. It is possible to have areas of abused chrome plate, with or without damage to the steel substrate.
Fluorescent penetrant flaw detection can reveal various abusive conditions that can occur to the
chrome plate during grinding. This inspection is covered by Part 5 - Procedure 2 - of this
specification.

D. Personnel qualified to carry out NDT 2DAP shall be deemed qualified to perform Procedure 1 of the
specification. Similarly, personnel qualified to carry out NDT 8DAP qualify to perform Procedure 2.

E. NDT 3DAP supersedes NDT 3 for all future Dowty Propellers contracts.
Where existing drawings/documents call up NDT 3, NDT 3DAP must be used in lieu.

2. Associated Specifications

A. PS 5101 Chromium Plating.

B. NDT 2DAP Magnetic Particle Flaw Detection.

C. NDT 6DAP Etch Inspection of Steel Components.

D. NDT 8DAP Penetrant Flaw Detection.

3. Equipment and Materials

A. The equipment and materials applicable to Procedure 1 of this specification are listed on Part 4 of
NDT 2DAP.

B. The equipment and materials applicable to Procedure 2 of this specification are listed in Part 4 of
NDT 8DAP.

4. Procedure 1

A. Inspect as follows:

(1) Carry out magnetic flaw detection of the ground chrome plated areas only, as specified on the
appropriate NDT 2DAP Technique Sheet, but using current values of 1500 amps Peak per inch
of diameter (600 amps Peak per cm of diameter). This will normally be 1.5 times the current
values given on the NDT 2DAP Technique Sheet.

(2) Where doubtful indications occur, re-examine with the current flowing where this is possible.

(3) Where crack indications are present, reject the part.

(4) Complete the process of demagnetisation, kerosene wash and dewatering oil dip.

5. Procedure 2

A. Inspect as follows:

(1) Where parts require pre-cleaning or where vapour degreasing is not permitted or is inadvisable,
parts should be degreased in the recommended cold degreasing fluid and allowed to dry.

(2) When permitted, degrease in trichloroethylene vapour degreaser to PS 5203, then cool to shop
temperature.

(3) Immerse in penetrant for 10 minutes. Remove and allow 15 minutes drain.

(4) Wash using air/water spray gun to normal NDT 8DAP settings. Water temperatures shall be
maintained between 10 and 38 °C (50 and 100 °F).

(5) Immerse in Ardrox 9PR12 emulsifier (10% mix by volume in water) for maximum of 5 seconds
and immediately immerse in second wash tank.

(6) Perform second water wash operation using an air/water spray gun, to normal NDT 8DAP
settings, on the chrome plated areas until surface fluorescence is just removed. The unplated
areas may retain fluorescence due to the short emulsifier time. Rinse under ultra violet light
with the water temperature between 10 and 38 °C (50 and 100 °F).

(7) Use a ‘clean air’ line and blow all surplus water from cavities and entrapment areas.

(8) Dry in the oven at a maximum temperature of 66 °C (150 °F). Keep the drying time to minimum
and remove from the oven when just surface dry. Allow parts to stand for 5 to 15 minutes.

(9) Apply a non-aqueous wet developer with a spray gun or aerosol can.

(10) View parts within 5 to 20 minutes of developer application and sentence to the requirements of
Part 6 - Acceptance Standards.

(11) Wash off surplus developer in the second wash.

(12) Immerse in the emulsifier for a minimum of 2 minutes.

(13) Wash off in the second wash.

(14) Immerse in a suitable dewatering oil.

6. Acceptance Standard

A. Where no indications exist, or where the chrome exhibits an even crazed pattern (see figures 1 and
2) the part is to be accepted.

B. Where patterns such as Spiralling (Figure 3), Chatter (Figure 4) or Banding (Figure 5) are evident,
the parts are to be rejected. Where false indications may occur due to grinding texture, it is
permissible to hone or lap the surface and re-inspect to this procedure.

C. Where parts are rejected, the chrome plate is to be stripped and the parts re-inspected to NDT
6DAP and NDT 2DAP.

7. Control Requirements

A. NDT 2DAP, Part 8, Control Requirements, apply to Procedure 1 of this specification.

B. NDT 8DAP, Part 8, Control Requirements, apply to Procedure 2 of this specification.
