CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

This section of the manuscript must include background

information and purpose. The background information includes a brief

summary of what has already been done in a particular area of interest,

the nature of a problem, and its potential significance should be

highlighted. References quoting relevant work by others should be

provided, with particular care taken not to miss out on important

previous work. It usually starts with more general and broad-based facts

and then moves on to specifics. As a general rule, it must be succinct

and focused as possible (Author Surname, Year).

The purpose of the study must also be reflected in this section.

This aims to inform the reader about the purpose of the study and how

it relates to previous work. This paragraph provides information about

how the hypothesis for a study, clinical or investigative observation, or

idea for a procedure or its modification came about, either from personal

thoughts and experience or from referenced work by others. This section

highlights new, different, or special aspects of what the researcher sims

to undertake in the study (Author Surname, Year).

1
College of Pharmacy

Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the study help define the focus of the research,

identify variables to be measured, indicate various steps to be involved,

establish the limits of the study, avoid the collection of any data that is

not strictly necessary.

The general objectives must be stated first. State what the

researcher wants to achieve in general terms.

1. Break down general objective into smaller, logically connected

parts that systematically address the various aspects of the

problem.

2. Specify exactly what the researcher will do in each phase of the

study, how, when, and for what purpose.

3. This must be stated using action verbs that are specific enough to

be measured.

Null Hypotheses

The null hypothesis is a type of denial of the existence of a trait,

characteristic, quality, value, correlation, or difference of the result. It

is always stated in negative form.

1. First null hypothesis

2. Second null hypothesis

2
College of Pharmacy

Significance of the Study

This section will emphasize the importance and benefits of the

research. It can be written from general significance to specific

significance. This section may include the benefits that the study will

have for others in the subject area or to the general public. This can be

stated in the order of importance or hierarchical. This can also include

statements on how the study is expected to resolve lingering questions

or gaps in the field of study.

Delimitations and Limitations of the Study

This section will state what the study will not include or what the

design of the study will not allow. Generally, a component of

delimitations is to present the boundaries established in the

development of the study. Specifically, a component of delimitations

could include choices such as the selection of objectives, variables, or

theory. It must be clearly stated what the study will include and exclude.

The limitations of the study are to present limits related to the

methodology which reflect parameters relevant to the application and

interpretation of data. State here the limitations of the study that are

beyond the control of the researcher and how the limitations affect

issues of internal validity.

3
College of Pharmacy

Definition of Terms
Key Term 1. Establish how the key term is defined for the study.
Operational definition must be used. The specific understanding of each
key term must be stated in this section.
Key Term 2. The key terms must be alphabetically organized.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

Topic a

This part of the manuscript establishes the context of the topic or

problem and place the research in a historical context. This part also

distinguishes what has been done from what needs to be done. This part

determines the relationship of the topic relative to current and past

studies (Author Surname, Year).

This chapter should include a general introduction, the body of the

chapter, and a conclusion or discussion section. The introduction gives

a brief idea of the topic to be covered in the chapter as well as the

general organization of the information. The body contains the

discussion of sources and is organized either chronologically,

thematically, or methodologically. The conclusion or recommendations

will discuss what the researcher has drawn from reviewing the literature

so far and where might the discussion proceed (Author Surname, Year).

This chapter may include tables, figures, and diagrams that will

aid in presenting the topics.

5
College of Pharmacy

Related Studies

This section presents studies and investigations already conducted

to which the current proposed study is related or has similarity.

Figures must be cited in text, e.g., (Fig. 1)

images, may be placed immediately below the paragraph where the figure is mentioned in
text.

CHAPTER 3

MATERIALS AND METHODS or METHODOLOGY

Procedure

This chapter provides the rationale and methodological detail of

the study. For the research proposal hearing, this chapter is usually

written in the future tense. Once the proposal has been accepted, the

tense must be changed to the past tense to describe what the researcher

did to conduct the study.

The procedures must be described in sufficient detail to enable

other researchers to evaluate the work or to duplicate the research. The

source of materials and sampling and the experimental design should

be indicated as to how the materials are gathered, prepared, acquired.

The collection of data must also be described in sufficient detail. The

experimental method should spell out the variables between

experimental and control samples.

Ethics review requirement on research involving human subjects

as participants or living animals as a subject in research. There must be

a section stating that the research protocol will undergo review by the

Institutional Ethics Review Committee or the Institutional Animal Care

9
College of Pharmacy
and Use Committee. The requirement for an Ethics Review shall be

determined by the thesis committee during the proposal hearing.

The flow of the research process must be presented in a schematic

diagram for a better view of the whole study. The flow of research is

considered a Figure and must be placed right after the first page of

Chapter 3.

CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Results and discussion are placed together in one chapter for

readers to have a continuity of thought to understand the meaning of

the results as they are presented. They are presented in an orderly and

coherent sequence. The presentation of the results and discussion is

according to the sequence of the objectives of the study in Chapter 1.

The data presented here are already summary of the results obtained

from the actual study or experiment. They may be presented in graphs,

tables, and images. Only data and illustrations that are pertinent to the

research must be included.

After showing the results, the discussion follows immediately. The

interpretation of the data must be presented with a particular emphasis

on how the results answered the objectives of the study. The findings

are then related to previous observations, and to the principles as to

how the results were obtained. Findings of the study or experiment

should also relate to practical applications or future studies.

12

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

This part is the summary of the results from Chapter 4 based on

the objectives of the study of Chapter 1. It presents here the key

information about the most important outcomes of your research.

Conclusions

The conclusions should be brief statements about the

generalizations inferred from the results. This also includes the

theoretical and practical implications of the findings discussed. The

conclusions will also answer the general and specific objectives of the

study in a general view.

Recommendations

The recommendations are placed in a separate paragraph. This

part of the manuscript includes a detailed description of suggestions for

future action based on the significance of the findings.
