1. CLASSICAL SYMPHONY mins.
The classical symphony is a lengthy composition for orchestra which
has several sections which are called, movements. It is also considered the
highest form of music in the Classical Period because of its complexity and
a large layer of timbre and instrumental sections.
Symphony came from the word ‘sinfonia’ which means “sounding
together”. Before the full development of the symphony, it is introductory
music for opera. Subsequently, Italian opera is very known at the time,
therefore, ‘sinfonia’ gained a lot of exposure and later on, it was played
even outside the opera houses. In the 18th century, it was totally detached
from the opera as a separate instrumental form as mentioned by Riggle
(2020) in study.com

Trivia: The term “Symphonia” is also a term used for a vocal composition
from the Middle Ages, as Libin (2020) mentioned in the Britannica.com

Listen to at least one composition of Haydn to fully gain a big picture of a

symphony as a composition. Kindly refer to the readings attach to the link
to extract the lists of the composition

2. CLASSICAL CONCERTO

Concerto is a composition with three movements and begins with a

sonata-allegro comparable to the classical symphony. The three movements
are fast (introduce the idea of the composition), slow (more meditative and
reflective), fast (showcase the full extent of technical capabilities of the
soloist) as Botero (2019) discussed in his podcast in Youtube.com.

Svanoe (2020) discussed that a concerto is a composition written for a

particular instrument, a soloist, and the orchestra.
In the Classical Period, where only a few instruments are available it is
written for the keyboard or the other instruments of the orchestra. The
soloist sits or stands before the orchestra to be heard by the audience. At
present, a concerto can be written for any instrument. Palada (2017)
explained that some of the solo instruments used in the classical concerto
include violin, cello, bassoon, trumpet, clarinet, horn, etc.

One of the highlights of the concerto is in the “cadenza”; when the soloist
plays to showcase virtuosity and the entire orchestra pause in silence.
