Lesson Idea Name: The Phases of the Moon
Grade Level/Content Area: 4th Grade – Science

Content Standard Addressed:

S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of the position and
motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner – 1.1.a. Students articulate and able to do by the end of this lesson:

the learning process itself to improve learning the reasoning behind the different phases of the
outcomes.
moon. Students will work independently to learn
through videos, interactivity activities, and
articles to successfully learn about the different
phase changes.
What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?
Students will learn about the different phase changes of the moon. Students will then show their
understanding through assessment, drawing, communication, and explanation.

I would expand on my student's level on the Bloom taxonomy by allowing them to create their own
model of the different phases of the moon. Students can create an online presentation that they can
share with the class or create a model to show their understanding of the different phases.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems

and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

During the lesson, the teacher will get the students settled into their seats at the beginning of
class. Then the teacher will give a run-down of how today’s lesson will go. Students will listen to
morning instructions then sit quietly while they do their independent work. The teacher will monitor
students' progress on the computer as well as walk around to make sure students are on track.
Students can get up and take a break whenever it says so during the lesson. I will get to know
students' prior knowledge with the warmup question. Students will let me know what they already
know about the phases of the moon. Students learning will be assessed through the assessment at
the end of the lesson and with the open-ended questions. I will conclude the lesson by giving
students the chance to share out loud what they have learned.
Managing student learning:
The tools and resources provided will allow students to create their own model that can be
shared with others. An add-on to this lesson could be a group project where students will create
their own lesson for the class. Students will have to use their knowledge of the Phases of the Moon
to be able to explain to someone that knows nothing about the topic. With the lesson I have
created, involving open-ended questions forces the students to think critically and develop their own
understanding of the standard.
As the lesson goes on, I will be able to track the students' progress so I will know if more time is
needed to complete the lesson. At the end of my lesson, I provided a question that asked students if
they are comfortable sharing with what they learn today out loud with the class. Also, at the end
when the students are finished with their assessment, students are able to work with their
tablemates to help if someone doesn't understand something. When I see that everyone has
completed the quiz, I will get the students' attention and start closing out the lesson.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The experience of the lesson given aligns with the UDL framework guidelines. Students begin their
lesson with what do they already know about the topic. The goal that has been set for them is the
achievement for them to gain more knowledge about the topic. This is assessed later in the lesson
by asking about what they have learned. Through representation the lesson given is supported
through many different methods. Students watch a video about the lesson, read an article, and
communicate with their peers. With Action, the assessment is provided with sharing what they learn
in the lesson and playing an online assessment game.
Reflective Practice:
With the Web 2.0 lessons, students are able to approach learning at their own pace. Students do not
have to worry about being called on to answer a question or not understanding the material at the
same pace as the other students. Students are also exposed to different methods of learning. Some
students like hands-on activities, reading, or watching videos. With this online lesson that are
introduced to all types of learning strategies. For this lesson, I look forward to communication
between students. Every student has one question to answer and will need to comment on other =s
to praise them on their response and add insightful information. I will be fun to see how interactive
the students are with each other.
