II. Stakeholders of The Organizations
Stakeholders can be both internal and external to a company. Internal stakeholders are
those who have a direct interest in a firm. External stakeholders are people who do not work
for a company but are impacted by its actions and consequences in some way. To put in
simplified, a stakeholder is someone who has an interest in a firm and can influence or be
influenced by it and most company try to be responsive to their stakeholders and focus on
five main groups which are customers, employees, investors, local communities and
suppliers.

The first stakeholder in the organization is employees, it is because employees are

closely related with the firms, and this gives them a special role among other stakeholders.
Employees affected by the organization's success or failure because they work for it and
spend so much of their effort, times towards the organization. If the organization have bad
management, it can impact employees as well as the company overall operation. In Proton, to
make sure the employees working with the optimum working condition the management take

Many people believe that businesses exist to serve the needs of their customers.
Customers are stakeholders in a business since the quality of service/products and their value
affects them. In today's business world, an organization must satisfy its customers in order to
succeed, and these are the reason why customer become one of the stakeholders. A business
also cannot survive without customers, customers purchase goods from business and because
of that customer are interested in how an organization operates. In Proton, they believe
customers satisfaction are one of the most crucial growth factors in Proton automobiles in
terms of sales and after-sales volumes. Based on the Corporate Report of Proton, they have
launched an aggressive campaign across the whole networks for both service outlets and sales
to strive for faster improvement to boost their customer satisfaction. Also, to maintain interest
in Proton automobiles and expand sales, they enhanced segment focus to enable better
package offers, improve customer experience across all touchpoints, and develop their
integrated marketing approach between car sales and after-sales service. As a result,
customers not only benefit better deals for car financing but also from value-added packages
that include a combination of other financial products.

Next, investors become internal stakeholders whose performance is greatly influenced

by the organization concern and its performance. an investor is any person or
organization/entity who invest capital with the expectation of receiving a financial return.
Proton was originally mainly held by HICOM, and by 2005, Mitsubishi Group had divested
their minority stake in Proton to Khazanah Nasional, and DRB-HICOM had entirely bought 6
Proton in 2012. Currently, Proton was funded by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group because
DRBHICOM stated in 2017 that it would sell a 49.9% share in Proton to Geely Automobile
Holdings. With the collaboration between local and China investors, Proton strengthened

8|Page
further with investment into production, and created X50 SUV and previously released
Proton X70 SUV. The inclusion of the new model is likely to boost the automobile vendor
community, with yearly purchase intent of at least 1.8 billion ringgit (440 million dollars).

A supplier is an example of an external stakeholder. Basically, a supplier is an entity

that supplies the raw material which is good and services that related to the company. This
entity is a member of a company's supply chain, and it may provide most of the value
contained in its products. As for Proton, they have collaborated with top global suppliers
from South Korea, Japan, India, Europe ASEAN and especially China to improve
performance, emissions, and quality standards in order to support Proton future product
release. Based on the statement of Chairman Proton Dato' Sri Syed Faisal Albar he mentions
that one of the critical success factors is Quality in Supply Chain. Regarding this, all supplier
of Proton are expected to execute a number of quality efforts to ensure that high-quality
components are manufactured and installed in Proton automobiles.. To guarantee supplier's
quality system and manufacturing process are in a controlled environment and compliance
with the global quality automotive standard, All Proton suppliers are subjected to stringent
year-round quality audits. Furthermore, this has always been the way forward for Geely
Holdings Group and the way for Proton also to have a good relationship with the supplier,
ever since Geely came on board, was to strengthen its relationship with suppliers by chiefly
helping them to improve quality, reduce costs and develop new products. One of the key
initiatives to help achieve this is by pairing each Malaysian supplier with a Chinese supplier
through joint venture and technical assistance agreements.

The last of the organization stakeholder is local and international communities. Most
business also tries to be socially responsible to their local communities, and they may
contribute to local programs. For Proton, community CSR is an internal part of the company's
public relations strategy that focusing on philanthropic activities and donations to
orphanages, youth, Non-Government Organizations, and other special interest groups. For
example, "Yayasan Proton'' had carried out several educational initiatives, 10 selected scholar
from universities across the country received "Yayasan Proton" scholarships and also
Yayasan 7 Proton created "Adopted School Programme" that required financial support for
educational activities. Also, Proton actively created “Program Sejahtera: Adopt a
Community” with the aim of helping the poor family by contributing RM175,000 to helping
build five units of 50 houses. During this Pandemic, Proton was still actively involved with
9|Page
local communities by produce 60,000 face shields for frontlines. By involving with the local
and international community, it can give a positive impact towards the organizations, people
tend to have a good perspective of the organization, and it will give a good impression to the
public to support their business entity.

III. Areas of Social Responsibility

When it comes to defining a company's sense of social responsibility, there are four
common concerns, which is responsibility towards its employees, its customers, its investor
and its environment. People used to believe that the relationship between corporate social
responsibility and the community benefits was inverse, that if firms benefited society, it came
at a financial cost to them. Recent research has pointed out that establishing shared value
(CSV) benefits both parties and not at a cost to one or the other.

Firstly, areas of social responsibility are related towards the employees. As an

organization, it is important to take responsibility towards employees and make sure they are
happy and pleased with their jobs. It is wrong to treat employees like machines and expect
them to work continuously for eight to nine hours at a time simply because they are paid. Do
not treat your employees if they are slaves. Management must ensure that individuals
associated with their organization are actually enjoying what they are doing. As mentioned,
Proton takes responsibility towards their employees, such as improving the ergonomic
workplace, ensuring the worker have basic knowledge about workplace safety. Proton
regularly conducted fire evacuation procedures and emergency drills for its employees.
Additionally, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia (NIOSH), a
unit under the Ministry of Human Resources, and Proton have collaborated to develop a
framework of Safety and Health Induction to promote a safety and health culture among
contractors and workers. Other than providing a basic need for employees, the organization
also cannot discriminate against people in any employment relationship, company should
treat employees equally. 8

Second is responsibility towards customers, an organization should treat their

customers fairly and honestly by deliver what the company promises to the customer. As a
large company, the main objective to success and have a stable operation, the organization
should focus towards customers by maintaining consumer right, price and so on. we can see
these areas of responsibility towards the customer is applied by Proton. Proton maintained its

10 | P a g e
high standards by adhering to the TQM principles (TQM), it is because Proton is devoted to
an effective quality improvement framework to fulfil the need of customers' right to get safe
products and services. Also, Proton takes initiative to take all customer complaints and follow
a stringent 8 stage problem-solving process to ensure that the problem occur by customer is
resolved permanently.

Next is responsibility towards the investor. Investors should be given complete and
accurate information by management. They should receive periodical reports, circulars, and
profit statements. The company's financial performance must be accurately reported so that
potential investors may make informed investment decisions in the future. As stated in the
Corporate Report of Proton, The Board is dedicated to giving shareholders, the investor, and
regulatory authorities with a balanced, meaningful and clear evaluation of the Group's
prospects and financial performance. Proton management will timely make an announcement
of quarterly financial statements and related press releases to keep shareholders and other
stakeholders informed about the Group's performance. Also, The Proton Board Audit
Committee will assist the Board in overseeing the company's financial reporting processes
and quality. In addition to the year-end audit, Proton guarantees that external auditors
conduct regular audits of the Group's quarterly results in order to improve the quality of
financial reporting.

Last but not least is responsibility towards the environment, respect for the
environment, efficient use of natural resources and prevention of contamination from the
various processes involved in our industrial activities are all important to us and as
manufacturing organizations try to introduce guidelines for continuous improvement in their
environmental performance. As for Proton, they take responsibility towards the environment
by slowly improving to prevent air pollution, reduce the usage of paper and so on. this can be
seen in the Proton factory; the manual spraying process has been totally replaced with
electrostatic type robots. Also, in its offices, Proton has implemented technology that has 9
decreased the use of paper and ink. The Group's approach to sound environmental
management has reduced operational costs while also generating a more peaceful and
healthier working environment for all workers. In addition, Proton is committed to designing
environmentally friendly products to the best of its ability. This involves taking into
consideration environmental impact. They will continue to lead the industry in lowering or
eliminating environmentally damaging substances.

IV. Approaches to Social Responsibility Program
Defensive stance, accommodative stance, obstructionist stance, and proactive stance
are the approaches to social responsibility. Proton Holdings Sdn. Bhd. are using a proactive
stance that means they actively seek for opportunities to contribute and involve with any
social environment such as welfare. In social responsibility, proactive stance is the top level.
By practicing proactive stance, they build consumer trust. This will help them to maintain the
good name of Proton as well as the customers that the company has spent time and money to
obtain. When proactive stance techniques are used, it is easier to keep customers and gain
new ones.

Proton Holdings Sdn. Bhd. is a company that usually anticipates a lot of programs for
individuals and groups that are in need. For instance, they helped the community in Kota
Bharu, Kelantan in 2015. They already take part to help the villagers by donating some
groceries like breads, rice and sardines, they also help the villagers to clean their house which
is full with mud without hesitation. This is really good because it will help the NGOs to do
their daily activities and make it easy to go anywhere. For MAC, it will help them to
distribute goods and for PEYATIM, it will help them to visit any orphanage or do volunteer
activities.

Thus, Proton Holdings Sdn. Bhd. will create a positive relationship with the
community and have a positive public image, this is because their good deeds to the
community will benefit them because customers will feel happy to support a company that
helps the community. Therefore, Proton Holdings Sdn. Bhd. is known as a company that is
usually involved in proactive, volunteering and welfare programs to help each other as well
as to stabilize their company reputation. Their effort to help our community is really helpful
and has a beneficial 10 outcome to the society overall. Other companies should consider it as
a responsibility and begin working to become socially responsible as quickly as practicable.

V. Corporate Social Responsibility Program

Definition of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a self-regulating business
model that helps a company be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public.

the Silver Book, with the purpose of supporting Malaysia's most disadvantaged communities
in breaking free from poverty. As a result, Proton pledged to assist in the construction of five
of the 50 dwellings required for the rehabilitation programme for the most vulnerable
members of society.

VI. Social Responsibility Management

Social responsibility is having a sense of duty to society and everything that is a part
of it and managers are accountable to society at large and not only for the company
shareholder. Individuals and consumers place trust in business to do their duties and take
leadership role in making the company and society much better. Therefore, PROTON

14 | P a g e
Firstly, social responsibility must start from upper management who charged with

Then, the upper management committee must do a plan that details about the level of
management support. As a result, the company shows that how they are actively seeking for
the opportunity to get involve into the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and the
detailing of plan should be there. As revealed by, in 2019, a new executive officer, Dr Li

as the top SUV X70 Proton Malaysia, as well as how Proton can generate better activities for
the general public. Furthermore, according to Dr. Li Chunrong, this program can help Proton
gain more profit in the future by providing additional ideas.
