(B.Sc. NURSING 4th YEAR)

Course Description: This course is designed for students to appreciate the concepts and principles
of obstetrical nursing and helps them to acquire knowledge and develop attitude and beginning skills in
rendering nursing care to normal and high-risk pregnant women during antenatal, natal and postnatal
periods in hospital and community settings. It also helps to develop skills in managing normal and high-
risk neonate and participate in family welfare programmes.

Objectives: -
At the end of the course the students
1. Appreciate the historical perspectives, trends and issues in obstetric Nursing
2. Identify the anatomical, physiological and psychosocial changes take place during pregnancy.
3. Render comprehensive care to mother during antenatal, natal and postpartum periods.
4. Demonstrate beginning skills in conducting normal deliveries.
5. Identify and manage abnormalities and complications of pregnancy, labour and puerperium.
6. Demonstrate competence in caring for high risk newborn.
7. Describe the pharmacological agents, their effects during, pregnancy, childbirth, puerperium,
lactation and role of the nurse.
8. Describe the recent advancement in contraceptive technology, birth control measures and role
of the nurse.
9. Give health education to antenatal, intra-natal, postnatal mothers and their family members.
10. Explain the legal and ethical issues pertaining to obstetrical nursing.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS:

Be in complete and proper clinical uniform.


1. (For boys ) White shirt should be tucked in properly with black belt and trousers, clinical apron ,ID card ,well groomed hair, white socks with black shoes should be
worn.
2. (For girls) White apron and pants ,proper hair bun with net , clinical apron ,ID card ,white socks with black shoes should be worn.
3. Accessories and ornaments/valuables are not allowed during the clinical duty.
4. Nails should be cut short.
5. Carry your clinical diary daily.
6. Complete your clinical criteria for respective areas.
7. Perform procedures according to the areas allotted.
8. Complete Case Books side by side.
9. Timely submissions for the criteria are mandatory.
10. Any misbehavior and disobedience will lead to penalization.
11. Clinical criteria:
• 1 case study for each area.
• 1 case presentation for each area.
• 1 nursing care plan for each area.
• 1 health education (Health talk) for each area.
