Journal Week #7

This week I was able to sit in on a session with a child who is very aggressive. I asked

my supervisor if I could for educational purposes because I know I will see cases like this when I

become an occupational therapist. He is new to the clinic, so we are still trying to find ways to

work with him. It was interesting to see how the session went. There were times where he would

try to come attack me, but my supervisor made sure that someone was blocking me so he

couldn’t get to me. We came to the realization that he isn’t trying to hurt anyone. He gets too

excited and doesn’t know how to express his emotions, so he will come at you and try to grab

you. I’ve watched him grab some of the other OTs, and he doesn’t actually try to hurt them. He

usually will just hold on and shake and usually trip over his own feet. This is something that will

be worked on throughout his sessions. When I was able to see him complete tasks, I was amazed

to see how smart he was. He doesn’t really talk much, but when I saw him sorting the alphabet, it

was like he was a completely different person. Every week I am able to learn something new, so

I was glad to have had this opportunity to further my knowledge about this career and what it

entails.

Additionally, I have been sitting in on a speech session with one kid who doesn’t really

speak. He will whisper here and there. We have come to the conclusion that he might have

selective mutism. The speech therapist that I have been working with had a conversation with his

dad to do further testing. As a therapist, you cannot diagnose a child, but you can highly
recommend for the child to get tests done. His father was completely in denial which we knew

would happen. This is the sad part about my job. Many of the parents who come in don’t want to

believe their kid has a disorder, so they come in undiagnosed and there isn’t anything we can do

about it.

Overall, I had another great week. I was able to gain a lot of knowledge and experience. I

have started to become more upset as the weeks pass by, because I don’t want this internship to

end. I will truly miss all of my coworkers and clients.
