When a thirteenth month becomes necessary, it is
put after Adar and is Ve-adar (“second Adar”)* The
exact day in our own calendar on which the different
Flebrew months start can’t be given since, the Fle-
brew calendar being a lunar calendar, the starting
days shift from year to year, compared with our solar
calendar. The use of the thirteenth month, how¬
ever, keeps them from shifting too far.
Nisan, which becomes the first month of the year,
according to Ex.l2:2, begins at the beginning of

ISAAC ASIMOV is a leading science
fiction writer, a Professor of Biochemis¬
try at Boston University, a loving father
of two, an insatiable reader, an exuber¬
ant scholar, and an indefatigable writer
of good books. Among some of his best
for younger readers are:
REALM of NUMBERS
“This lucidly written approach to math¬
ematics will fascinate anyone, including
adults, interested in the subject, and may
enlighten confused or reluctant students.
Explanations of complex symbols are
brilliantly done.”
Saturday Review
REALM of MEASURE
“A highly desirable book for both science
students and general readers.”
Chicago Tribune
REALM of ALGEBRA
“Asimov has done an excellent job of
explaining the building blocks of algebra
. . . The whole thing is handled so well
one is sorry to see the book come to an
end . . .”
Scientific American
BREAKTHROUGHS in SCIENCE
“A handy introduction to the world’s
great men of science.”
Books for Young Readers Magazine
Other books on language by Isaac Asimov:
WORDS of SCIENCE
“In addition to being a useful reference book, this is a delight¬
ful book for children of any age to read at random, because
of the charm and freshness of the author’s information and
speculation, and his sense of the essential reasonableness and
simplicity of all science.”
The New Yorker
WORDS in GENESIS
“In this fine and scholarly book the author retells the story of
Genesis with particular emphasis on the derivation and his¬
tory of the words associated with the book . . . adds something
new to the traditional story of Creation.”
Christian Herald
