RACISM AND DISCRIMATION BECAUSE THE

UNFAVORABLY BECAUSE OF BEING MARRIED TO (OR ASSOCIATED WITH) A

A GROUP OF PEOPLE OF OUR SOCIETY ESTABLISH A DIFFERENT BEHAVIOR
the Western Hemisphere to do so. During more than 300 years of slavery in the Americas, Brazil had been the country
that had imported the most African slaves, since it had brought seven times more African slaves into the country
Another important difference was the degree of miscegenation or mixture of races that had occurred, due in large
part to the predominance of the male sex among its colonizers. Unlike colonization in North America, which was based
on families, the Portuguese settlers in Brazil were mostly single men. For this reason, those settlers looked for
African, indigenous or mulatto women as companions, miscegenation or crossbreeding being very common. Today,
Brazilians often express pride in their history of miscegenation and continue to have rates of marriage between
members of different races that are much higher than those in the United States of America.
Miscegenation and intermarriage suggest fluid race relations in Brazil and, unlike the United States or South Africa,
there were no specifically racist laws, such as segregation or apartheid, throughout the 20th century. . For these
reasons, Brazilians regarded their country as a “racial democracy” from as early as the 1930s and until recent years.
They considered AAthat racism and racial discrimination were minimal or nonexistent in Brazilian society, unlike
other multiracial societies in the world. A relatively narrow conception of discrimination meant that in the past only
explicit manifestations of racism or racial laws were considered discriminatory, with only countries such as South
Africa or the United States considered truly racist. On the other hand, the issue of race was not openly discussed in
Brazilian society, while other societies were seen as obsessed with race and differences between races.
