4.0 Literature review
The legendary Warren Buffett once said that every investor can be a research analyst. All that they need
to do is to ask some very probing questions about the company. When you buy a stock, you actually
buy a part of the company behind the stock! So you buy the company’s products, its strategy, its
management quality and its future prospects. Stock research is all about understanding the company
behind the stock in elaborate detail. Here is your guide.

How good is the future of the business?

That is where it all begins. When you buy a company’s stock, you buy for the future. As Buffett put it,
“If the past is all that mattered, then archaeologists would be the wealthiest persons in the world.” As an
investor, you need to ask some tough questions. Does the company operate in a high-growth business or
stable business? Is the demand for the products cyclical or round-the-year? What are the big ideas the
company has to increase profits?

A company is as good as the cash flows it generates

In warfare, a victory that comes at a huge cost is as good as a defeat. The same is true of growth too. If
the company is paying top dollar to buy market share, the question is what happens after three years.
Burning cash round-the-clock cannot go on forever. At some point, eyeballs and footfalls must translate
into profits for the company. Again, profits are not reflective of the actual cash flows of the company,
so focus on the operating cash flows generated.

Look at the risks in terms of existing and future competition

Not all competition is visible. Telecom in India was disrupted by an oil and gas company. Sometimes
competition comes from disruptive products. Hero Honda disrupted the two-wheeler industry with
focus on motorbikes and fuel efficiency. Look at the way ecommerce companies and discount brokers
have disrupted retail and financial services respectively. As an investor, watch out for such potential
risks.
UPSTOX:
Our aim is to make cutting-edge trading software accessible to every citizen of India so that trading and
investing in the stock markets is possible for all. We then changed our brand name to Upstox in 2016.

There are trillions of rupees of wealth in India, lying in unproductive assets, losing value over time. We
will help millions of Indians do better with their wealth.
We will help them participate confidently in the public markets and build generational wealth through
the power of compounding.
We will help them invest by providing the right financial education to make the right investment
decisions at the right time.
We will do this through a seamless digital platform that will bring together the best of cutting-edge
technology, intuitive design, ease and safety.
Story:
We have been in the business of building wealth for our customers for over a decade. Ravi, Shrini and
Raghu had spent most of their lives in the United States where they had started multiple companies
together. One of their annual family trips to India in 2009 turned into a life changing moment when
they saw the tremendous potential in the Indian market - back then, the equity market participation in
India was just 2%.

So Upstox was born in 2009 (then known as RKSV) in a small apartment in Delhi, serving a small
cohort of customers, helping them grow their investments in the public markets. We then moved to
Mumbai, and momentum grew. Thousands of customers joined us purely through word of mouth.
Kavitha joined the team a few years into our journey and supercharged our growth, strategy, finance
and operations. This was the beginning of our exponential scaling.

We kept innovating at the cutting edge of fintech, even before fintech was a thing! We were the first in
the industry to launch unlimited trading plans at a fixed price.

Another first was going completely paperless for our onboarding back in 2016. Thanks to the ‘financial
superhighway’ innovation of the government (the push for digital identity via Aadhar and eKYC and
the push for digital payments), our scale grew by orders of magnitude.

We expanded our proposition from India to Bharat, with 70% of our new users coming from Tier 2 / 3
markets. This exponential growth came because of reducing barriers to entry to all customers. In 2021,
we took this rocketship to the moon with our partnership with the Indian Premier League (IPL). In
2020, we had crossed a cumulative number of a million customers, and in 2021, we added the same
number in a single month! Our first nationwide partnership with the world’s largest cricketing league
along with our mass media campaign made us a household brand across the country.

We are just getting started, and we will continue to build for every Indian’s prosperity.

Cost Sheet:
A cost sheet is a statement that shows the various components of total cost for a product and shows
previous data for comparison. You can deduce the ideal selling price of a product based on the cost
sheet.
A cost sheet document can be prepared either by using historical cost or by referring to estimated costs.
A historical cost sheet is prepared based on the actual cost incurred for a product. An estimated cost
sheet, on the other hand, is prepared based on estimated cost just before the production begins.

Importance and objectives of cost sheet

Cost sheets help with a number of essential business processes:

1. Determining cost: The main objective of the cost sheet is to obtain an accurate product cost. It gives
you both the total cost and cost per unit of a product.

2. Fixing selling price: In order to fix the selling price of a product, you need to create a cost sheet so
you can see the details of its production cost.

3. Cost comparison: It helps the management compare the current cost of a product with a previous per
unit cost for the same product. Comparing the costs helps management take corrective measures if costs
have increased.

4. Cost control: The cost sheet is an important document for a manufacturing unit, as it helps in
controlling production costs. Using an estimated cost sheet aids in monitoring labour, material and
overhead costs at each step of production.
