SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Calculate a specified measure of position (e.g. 90th percentile) of a set of data.
Interprets measures of position.
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. interpret percentiles;
2. calculate specified percentile of a set of data;
3. solve problems involving percentiles for grouped data.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Measures of Position for Grouped Data (Percentile)
B. References: Learners Material pp. 390-397
C. Materials: Laptop, TV, whiteboard & marker
III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Cleanliness
3. Checking of Attendance
B. Review
What are the different measures of position? How to calculate the percentile for
ungrouped data?

C. Motivational Activity (Diad)

Interpret the picture.

D. Lesson Proper
The Percentile for Grouped Data

Example:
Calculate the
40th, 66th, and 85th percentile of the Mathematics test score of 45 students.

Class Interval Frequency Class Boundaries <cf

41 – 45 11 40.5 – 45.5 45 P85

36 – 40 6 35.5 – 40.5 34 P66

31 – 35 9 30.5 – 35.5 28
26 – 30 P40 7 25.5 – 30.5 19
21 – 25 8 20.5 – 25.5 12
16 - 20 4 15.5 – 20.5 4

N = 45
Solution:
1. Calculate 40th percentile.
P35 = K(N)/100
= 40(45)/100
= 18
This means we need to find the class interval where the 18th score is contained.
Note that 13-19 scores belong to the class interval: 26-30. So, the 18 th score is also within
the class interval. The P40 class is the class interval 26-30.
LB = 25.5
N = 45
<cf = 12
f=7
i=5
18−12
P40 = 25.5 + ( )5
7
P40 = 29.79
Therefore, 40% of the students got a score less than or equal to 26-30.
E. Application (Triad)
Anthony is a secretary in one big company in Metro Manila. His salary is in the
th
70 percentile. Should Anthony be glad about his salary or not? Explain your answer.

F. Generalization
Therefore, how to calculate percentile of a grouped data?
IV. EVALUATION (By group)
The scores obtained by 44 students in Grade 10 English test are distributed as follows. Calculate
its percentile and interpret the result.

Group 1 – P25, P37 and P69

Group 2 – P16, P50 and P 87

Group 3 – P28, P75 and P88

Group 4 – P30, P 58 and P95

Class Interval Scores Frequency (f)

50-54 1
55-59 3
60-64 2
65-69 5
70-74 8
75-79 10
80-84 9
85-89 4
90-94 2

V. ASSIGNMENT
Denise and Christine scored 32 and 23, respectively, in the National Career Assessment
Examination (NCAE). The determining factor for a college scholarship is that a student’s score
should be in the top 10% of the scores of his/her graduating class. The students in the
graduating class obtained the following scores in the NCAE. (see Learner’s Material pages 396-
397 Activity 6)
