STORAGE AND PRESERVATION OF HYDRAULIC MOTORS AND HYDRAULIC PUMPS

1. Introduction.

A. This specification details requirements for the satisfactory storage and preservation of hydraulic
motors and hydraulic pumps. Hereafter in this specification motors and pumps will be jointly referred
to as ‘units’.

B. This specification supersedes PS 1016-9-3 for all Dowty Propellers contracts.

2. Requirements.

A. The instructions in paragraph 3 shall be carried out if not otherwise specified on drawings, and must
be used in conjunction with PS 51016-1-1.

3. Procedure.

A. Equipment out of service but installed in an aircraft.

(1) If the unit has been out of service for a period of six months, it shall have all accessible external
surfaces cleaned, and be examined for general condition, satisfactory condition of protective
coatings and freedom from corrosion.

(a) Carry out any necessary rectification.

(b) Fully inhibit in accordance with paragraph E.

(2) After every subsequent twelve months re-examine and re-inhibit as in paragraphs 3.A.(1)(a) to
3.A.(1)(b) inclusive.

(3) Installed units shall be completely overhauled after ten years from the date of last overhaul, or
from the date of manufacture in the case of new equipment.

(4) Carry out protective treatment in accordance with paragraph 3.D.

B. Equipment in storage.

(1) Units may only be stored for up to one month without being fully inhibited and re-inhibited after
every subsequent twelve months. Refer to paragraph E. for inhibiting procedure.

(2) Stored units shall be completely overhauled after ten years from the date of last overhaul or
from the date of manufacture in the case of new units.

(3) Carry out protective treatment in accordance with paragraph 3.D.

C. Combined storage in installed time.

(1) Units shall be completely overhauled after a combined storage and installed time of ten years
from the date of last overhaul or from the date of manufacture in the case of new units.

D. Protective treatment.

(1) Short term storage and installed equipment (up to one month).

(a) Fit blanking caps, plugs and covers to all uncoupled connections and open orifices.

(2) Long term out of service installed equipment (over one month).

(a) Fit blanking caps, plugs and covers to all uncoupled connections and open orifices.

(b) Clean all accessible external surfaces.

(c) Apply corrosion preventative to DEF 2331, (PX 1), NATO C-614 to all accessible
unprotected external surfaces, and coat any exposed oil seals with silicone grease
compound
DEFSTAN 68-69, (XG 250), NATO S-736.

(3) Long term stored equipment (over one month).

(a) Proceed as in paragraphs 3.D.(2)(a) to 3.D.(2)(c) inclusive.

(b) Clean the drive shaft serrations with white spirit and apply preservative to DEFSTAN 91-38,
(PX 6).

(c) Wrap unit in greaseproof paper or mouldable wrap to DEFSTAN 81-129 and tape with
pressure sensitive adhesive tape to DEFSTAN 81-25 or DEFSTAN 75-1.

(d) Enclose in a polythene bag and heat seal.

(e) Pack in a suitable container.

E. Inhibition.

(1) Inhibiting oil.

(a) Equipment which normally operates on mineral or mineral based fluids, shall be inhibited
with fluid to DEFSTAN 91-48, (OM 15), NATO H-515.

(b) Equipment which normally operates on synthetic fluids e.g. Skydrol, Oronite etc. shall
inhibited with the same fluid on which it operates.

(c) Fluid shall be to the cleanliness standard of PS 910-1.

(2) Procedure.

(a) Drain any existing fluid from the unit.

(b) Fill the unit approximately 90% full with inhibiting fluid and rotate the drive shaft several
times to ensure full circulation.

(c) Fit blanking caps, plugs and covers to all uncoupled connections and open orifices.
