STORAGE & PRESERVATION OF POLYURETHANE ANTI-EROSION STRIPS AND
DE-ICING CABLE COVER

1. Introduction.

A. Specifications PS 51016-2-1, PS 51016-2-2 and PS 51016-2-3 detail the general requirements for
the satisfactory storage and preservation of Civil and Military propellers and propeller blade
assemblies respectively.

This specification details requirements peculiar to polyurethane anti-erosion strips and de-icing
cable covers.

B. The information was originally contained in RAS 500 Part 2, Chapter 4, and PS 205.

C. This specification supersedes PS 1016-2-5 for all Dowty Propellers contracts.

2. Requirements.

A. The instructions in paragraph 3 shall be carried out whether or not specified on drawings.

3. Procedure.

A. Storage of anti-erosion strips and de-icing cable covers.

(1) Components are to be stored away from the sunlight – preferably in the dark- at an even cool
temperature and in still air.

(2) Each component must be stored in the packing in which it is received from the manufacturer.

(3) Each component must be labelled with the date of moulding.

(4) In accordance with the special requirements for care and inspection of polyurethane rubbers in
the footnote to paragraph 3.1. of British Standards F68, the maximum initial storage period of
the component is three years from the date appearing either on the component or on its
packing.

(5) Provided the component is inspected in accordance with paragraph 3.3 of F68 and found to be
satisfactory, it may be stored for a further two years.

(6) Where customers special requirements specify a shorter period of storage, such requirements
must be adhered to.

(7) A regular inspection of stock is necessary to ensure that the older components are being used
in preference to later ones.

(8) During storage, distortion of the components must be guarded against, and the following
instruction should be complied with:-

Components must be supported for their full length, and, if stacked, not more than 4
components are to be in one ‘Stack’. Stacks must not be tied in any way.

(9) Should a component be removed from its packaging, e.g., for inspection, great care must be
taken to ensure that the surfaces for bonding are not handled and do not become contaminated
in any way. The component must be re-sealed immediately in its package after inspection.
