POINTS TO REMEMBER

What is printmaking?
For all you know, you have already done a print and did not even know it. Do you
remember the toy stamps you used to play with when you were younger? You probably
created your first print when you tapped a stamp to the ink pad and then pressed the
stamp onto paper.
What are popular printmaking techniques?
The different processes used to make prints include relief or wood block print,
linoleum block printing, and vegetable block printing.
What is relief block printing?
The first and oldest process to make a print is relief block printing. In relief block
printing, an artist draws an image on a smooth block of wood (woodblock), then cuts way
the background, leaving the image a bit raised in relief.

THE ELEMENTS OF ART

The discussion that follows explains the elements of art particularly organic
and inorganic lines, colors, textures, and shapes.
There are two kinds of lines that will be discussed in this lesson. There are the organic
and inorganic lines. These lines are common in the attire and body accessories of the
cultural communities in the Philippines.
Organic lines - These lines have length and direction that form an irregular shape.
Organic lines are found in nature like those lines formed in banana plants and in coconut
trees.
Inorganic lines - Inorganic lines are marks with length and direction that are straight
and form a geometric shape.

ARTFUL STENCIL PRINTS
Cutting or tearing a paper can create a stencil. Using stencils is another way to
make prints in a number of exact copies or replicas.
Stencils are reusable (acetate templates can be washed and cleaned). Arrangement of
which can be duplicated or altered in color, contrast or value. Artists enjoy stencil making
because they can see exactly where they are printing.
Is it pattern day today? Are you wearing your favorite polka dot blouse, striped socks,
flowered cap, plaid skirt, or checkered T-shirt? Patterns are important in your everyday
lives.
Patterns best reflect the design principles of repetition, variation, contrast, emphasis,
rhythm, and harmony.
Different kinds of motifs have been a part of the ornaments in decorating the surfaces of
the materials used by the artists from the cultural communities. They might even use motifs
for symbolic meaning.
