Classifying objects is an important skill for dealing with
data topics later in the mathematics curriculum. Begin
with simple classifications – big and small, more and
less, straight and curved. Give students opportunities
to sort objects, groups or shapes, and to explain their
classification system. Ask them to count how many
in each category. These activities are beginning their
understanding of data representation.
Classroom activities
Which Hat?
Place two hats on the floor with the labels straight and
curved. Have a set of pictures of shapes and lines, eg
zigzag and curvy. Each student chooses one picture and
works out which hat it must go in.
Match Up!
Give the class half of a shape and colour pattern each.
Give them a time limit to find the person who has the
other half of their pattern and sit together. Then ask them
to draw and colour that pattern in their book or on paper.
