3.6 Plate Loading Test

The Plate Loading Test was carried out at following locations. The key plan showing the test
locations is as shown in Annexure 1. The test results are appended in Annexure 4.

4. Laboratory Testing:
The following Laboratory Tests were conducted on the collected Disturbed and washed soil
samples are as follows:
Natural Moisture Content as per BS1377-Part 9_1990
Consistency Limits as per BS1377-Part 1_1990
Grain Size Analysis as per BS1377-Part 2_1990
Specific Gravity as per BS1377-Part 2_1990
Differential Free Swell Index as per BS1377-Part 3_1990
 Evaluation of shear parameters of Soils by;
a. Undrained Direct shear test as per BS1377-Part 7_1990
b. Consolidated Undrained Triaxial Test as per BS1377-Part 7_1990
c. Unconsolidated Undrained Triaxial Shear Strength test as per BS1377-Part 7_1990
Laboratory test results are appended in Annexure 6.
5. Results and Discussions:
5.1 Sub –Soil Strata Encountered
The sub-soil profile indicates that the sub soil is non plastic, non cohesive and non swelling
frictional soils possesses reasonable good angle of internal friction.

6. Recommendations:
6.1 Calculation of Bearing Pressure
The bearing pressure is calculated by considering the settlement criteria and shear criteria as per
following standards of practice.

6.1.1 The allowable bearing pressure given below is at the depth calculated from the existing
Ground level and shall be as mentioned in bore log sheets.

6.1.2 The recommended allowable bearing pressure at different foundations depths from existing
Ground level are as given below.

6.1.3 The bearing capacity is calculated based on Meyerhof (1965) equation mentioned in
“Foundation Analysis and Design” by Joseph E. Bowles, fifth edition considering SPT
values, strata observed till the termination of each bore and considering allowable uniform
settlement of 25 mm. The 2 m x 2 m size of footing is considered for calculations.
