Evia (the old name is Euboea) is the second largest (3655 sq. Km) Greek island after Crete, with a
population of about 220,000. It is separated from mainland Greece, but as it is close to land, it is
connected by two bridges:
- Chalkis Bridge - modern and one of the largest suspension bridges in Europe
- the older Negroponte sliding bridge, which crosses over the narrowest part of the Strait of Euripus.
In the center of the island lies the largest settlement and capital Chalcis - a modern city with many
shops, bars, restaurants, the Archaeological Museum, with ruins of ancient temples and a 15th
century Fortress.
Evia Island is about 150 km long, but this distance can be travelled in at least four hours as most of
the island is mountainous. There are regular ferry lines to the island itself, distributed across its
three geographical regions:
Evia has excellent tourism infrastructure that can satisfy every taste. The island attracts its tourists
with its pleasant climate, healing thermal springs (Oedipsos), numerous sandy beaches in bays with
turquoise waters, various historical monuments, religious temples and incredible museums.
Northern Evia is larger and wider in area, with many pine and olive groves. An interesting landmark
here in the area of Agios Georgios is the church "Panagia Lihada" - dedicated to the Mother of God,
and therefore her great icon is kept in it.
Southern Evia is almost uninhabited, but there are picturesque small coves with unorganized sandy
beaches splashed by the blue water of the Aegean Sea.
Accommodation on Evia Island can satisfy even the most demanding visitors - both large hotel
complexes with all amenities and more economical apartments for rent are available.
One of the most famous hotels here is Themae Sila Spa - built in 1897. and his visitors were: Aristotle
Onasis, Maria Callas, Churchill, Greta Garbo, Omar Sharif and others. Today, this hotel is considered
one of the best spa hotels in the world.
The most important urban centers on Evia Island are: Oedipsos (mineral springs), Aliveri, Artak,
Vasiliko, Eretria (Evia port), Kimi, Karistos and Limni, Orei, Rovies and many more.
