Song Analysis
"If I Were a Boy" is a song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad and originally
performed by Jean but it gained international attention after a version performed by the
American singer Beyoncé, from her third studio album I Am... Sasha Fierce. Jean and
Gad also handled its production alongside Beyoncé. Inspired by the difficult break-up of
a romantic relationship, the song was initially recorded by Jean, whose record company
rejected it. Beyoncé then recorded her own version.
At the beginning of the song, it shows that the person wants to become a man
and live a free life compared to the pressure that being a girl brings. Next, there is also
when it says she can be “a better man,” which means that she has been wronged by
someone and thinks that she would’ve have done a better job if she was the man
between them. Then it enumerates everything that the boy had done bad to her which
includes the lines I'd listen to her” 'Cause I know how it hurts, When you lose the one
you wanted, 'Cause he's taken you for granted, And everything you had got destroyed.”
At the end she says that if the boy was the one in her place then he wouldn’t have done
the things that he did.
The song has a very depressing lyrics and the music matches it by sounding as
sad as the lyrics. The music and the lyrics mesh well and create a good balance
between them. This song will most likely be popular for girls in their adolescent or youth.
Overall, it was a good song to listen to when you are in the mood for a sad song.
