The next farm tractor parts and their functions is control. This section serves to facilitate
the engine in driving the tractor when the tractor carries a heavy load. Tractors are designed
for multiple tasking (doing many jobs at once). Several functions may occur at the same
time. A safe operator will be able to maintain control of each function. Now, We will identify
several important tractor controls and their direction of movement.

Honey Lee:
Controls
 Steering Wheel – used to turn the steering tire
 Ignition Key & Switch – engages power to parts from the battery may include solenoid
for fuel shut-off
 Manual Fuel Shut-off (Emergency Stop Knob) – pulled to shut-off the engine
 Foot Throttle Pedal – increases tractor RPM
 Hand Throttle Lever – increases tractor RPM in constant speed
 Range Lever – selects range high or low for gear
 Gear-shift Lever – used to select the transmission gear speed
 Shuttle-shift Lever – used to shuttle from forward to reverse with or without clutch
depending on the tractor model
 Differential Lock Pedal – engage to lock drive axles together
 Right Brake Pedal – locks right drive tire
 Left Brake Pedal – locks left drive tire
 Clutch Pedal – engage or disengage for starting or for stopping tractor motion
 Parking Brake Lever – pull to set parking works when off tractor
 Seat – for the driver’s or operator’s comfort
 Hydraulic Draft Lever – controls the lower links of the three-point link when the
implement is in working position
 Hydraulic Position Lever – controls the lower links of the three-point link when the
implement is in transportation position
 Seatbelt – keeps the operator in the safety zone
 PTO Control Lever – engage and disengage PTO shaft

Instruments, or gauges, on the tractor control panel tell the driver about the operating
conditions within and around the tractor. All tractor drivers should know what instruments are
available to indicate that the tractor is operating properly. When tractor systems are not working
properly, continued operation may cause costly repairs and possible injury. That is why it is
important to know the following instruments of a tractor

MARGIE:
Dashboard
 Water Temperature Gauge – allows the monitoring of the tractor’s engine coolant
temperature to ensure that it does not overheat
 Tachometer – used for measuring the rotation or revolution speed of the engine
 Hour Meter – tracks or records the elapsed time normally displaying hours in terms of
hours
 Fuel Gauge – indicates the amount of fuel in the fuel tank
 Turn Signal Light Switches – Signals the turn signal flasher to flash either the right or left
turn lights both front and rear and will remain flashing until the steering wheel is reversed
from the turn direction selected
 Headlight Switch – turns the tractor’s headlight on/off
 Horn Switch – operates the tractor’s horn
 Hazard Warning Light Switch – turns the tractor’s warning light on/off
 Rear Working Light Switch – turns the tractor’s working light on/off
 Master Lighting Switch – turns the tractor’s lights on/off
 Steering Switch – improves the tractor’s idle quality by controlling the pressure in the
power steering system

Color Coding for Controls –

STOP ENGINE—RED color
GROUND MOTION- ORANGE color (engine speed, PARK-Lock, transmission) POWER
ENGAGEMENT – YELLOW color (engage PTO or remote power sources) POSITIONING and
ADJUSTING– BLACK color (choke the engine, turn lights on)
