CHAPTER I: INTODUCTION
 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Despite of the Covid-19 pandemic we faced many
schools are temporarily closed and no students are allowed to
come to school so that Department of Education (DepEd)
implemented the new normal learning and these are the online
and modular learning, but in public schools, modular learning
was the most preferred new normal learning mode.
The integration of SLMs with the alternative learning
delivery modalities (modular, television-based, radio-based
instruction, blended, and online) will help DepEd ensure that all
learners have access to quality basic education for SY 2020-
2021 with face-to-face classes still prohibited due to the public
health situation.
“The SLMs and the other alternative learning delivery
modalities are in place to address the needs, situations, and
resources of each and every learner and will cover all the bases
in ensuring that basic education will be accessible amid the
present crisis posed by COVID-19,” DepEd Secretary Leonor
Briones said.
SLMs will be delivered in printed format to schools that
are located in coastal areas, far-flung provinces, and
communities without access to the internet or electricity. For
households with gadgets and devices, the Department has
announced that SLMs can also be accessed online or offline.
We choose this title because we want to know what are
the problems and the strategies that the students did to
overcome those problems.

1
 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
*General Statement
The purpose of this survey/study specifically is to
determine the problem encountered in the modular learning
among Grade 12 students of SSASHS.
1. What are common problems faced by the students
regarding the modular learning?
2. What are the adjustment strategies that the students
did to cope the problems they faced?
3. How did these adjustment strategies improve their
learning?

 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study entitled Factors Influencing the

Preference of the Students to Study through Module
during Covid-19 Pandemic will be very much entitled
beneficial to those students whose conducting modular
learning because this research can guild suggested
adjustment strategies.

To the teachers, to gain more knowledge that

modular learning is can’t teach the students like the way
they discuss it physically or on a face to face classess.

To the parents, to know the strategies that they can

help to improve the learning of their child in this new type
of learning mode and to know what factors they can
support their child.

2
 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

We will only study the Problems encountered in

modular learning among Grade 12 students in Seguinon
Stand Alone Senior High School of the School Year 2021-
2022.

 DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Gain- an increase in wealth or resources

 Modular Learning -is a form of distance learning that uses
Self-Learning Modules (SLM) based on the most essential
learning competencies (MELCS) developed by the
teachers with the aid of curriculum developers.
 Seguinon Stand Alone Senior High School – a school in
Albuera, Leyte who offered Grade 11 and 12 education
and strands ABM,STEM, an HUMSS.
 Strategy -a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a
major or overall aim.

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
According to Llego (2020) Modular Distance Learning or
Learning involves individualized instruction that allows learners to
use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital
format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable in the context of
the learner, and other learning Learner’s materials, textbooks,
activity sheets, study guides and other study materials.

Education and Learning are thought to be most crucial

foundation of a growing economy, yet the academic system right
now needs an extreme transformation and major technological
changes and improvement. Adopting to the challenges of the times
in fulfilling its mandate, the DepEd would be using blended and
distance learning programs period of COVID-19 pandemic
consistent with the President preference that children would not be
sent to school until it is safe to do so.

The advantages of teaching by way of distance often readily

apparent, particularly with regard to student access and availability,
but there are some drawbacks. Students cannot develop the
socialization and interpersonal skills that normally accompany
traditional learning methods.

The use of modules encourages independent study. One of

the benefits of using modules for instruction is the accusations of
better self-study or learning skills among students. Students engage
themselves in learning the concepts presented in the module. They
develop a sense of responsibility in accomplishing the tasks
provided in the module. With little or no assistance from others, the
learners progress on their own. They are learning how to learn;
they are empowered (Nardo, M.T.B, 2017).

Other advantages of modular instruction include more choice

and self-pacing for students; more variety and flexibility for
teachers and staff; and increased adaptability of instructional
materials

CHAPTER III: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
 RESEARCH DESIGN
This present study followed the quantitative approach,
the descriptive – survey research methodology.
Descriptive -suevey research included studies give
pertinent information about the elements that were
prevailing in the present times. It describe the factors that
can influence the students to study despite of the
pandemic or Covid-19.

 Research Locale/ Environment

We conducted this research at Seguinon Stand Alone
Senior High School a public school that is located at
Seguinon, Albuera, Leyte and offering Strands
(ABM,STEM,HUMSS)

 Research Instruments
The instruments we use are survey questionnaires,
and interview.
8
The study determined the facilitators and barriers of students'
modular distance learning in English (MDLE). It identified how students
facilitate learning, the issues in learning English in modular set-up, and
students’ coping mechanisms. A hermeneutic phenomenological research
design was employed. Ten Semi-structured interviews were performed in
collecting data. Thematic Analysis revealed that different factors
facilitated and hindered students’ MDLE. Facilitators included self-
directed learning and family-assisted learning. Barriers comprised
inevitable home distractions, poor comprehension, and lack of parents’
assistance. Intrinsic motivation was the participants’ coping mechanism.
The study recommended encouraging time management to students to
prevent overlapping of activities at home and in studies. Teachers can
initiate a mobile library for students with poor comprehension. It can help
them access books and other reading materials, especially in remote
areas.
The year 2020 has been a remarkable period when the Philippines has
on the peak of struggle as the Covid-19 virus continues to find its way to
disrupt the economy, health, culture, and education in the country. The
increasing number of infected people and the threat of the new strains of
the coronavirus has forced the government to still ban the face-to-face
classes. As a result, Modular Distance Learning becomes the widely used
modality in consideration to the learners in areas where the internet is
inaccessible for online learning.

As cited by Ragandang (2020), Our country ranked eleventh slowest in

upload speed and sixteenth slowest in download speed among 87
countries; while named 21st or 72.4 percent — leveled from those of
Albania, Brazil, and Tunisia, among others — in terms of 4G availability
(Mercurio, 2020). By this result, it can be concluded that online distance
learning is not applicable to use by students all over the country due to
the slow rate of upload and download speed.

In addition to the data gathered via DepEd’s National Learner

Enrolment and Survey Forms (LESFs), 8.8 million (39.6% of total
respondents) out of the 22.2 million enrollees preferred modular distance
learning for the upcoming school year. Meanwhile, 3.9 million enrollees
(17.6%) were partial to blended learning (which uses a combination of
different modalities), 3.8 million (17.1%) preferred online learning, and
1.4 million and 900,000 enrollees preferred TV-based and radio-based
learning, respectively. Due to this concern, the modular Learning
modality has been widely used by all public schools in the Philippines.

6
Modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning
Modules (SLM) and is highly convenient for most typical Filipino
students. It was also the most preferred learning system of the majority of
parents/guardians for their children. The SLM is based on the most
essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided by the Department of
Education.

In modular distance learning, the teachers take the responsibility of

monitoring the progress of the learners. The students may ask assistance
from the teacher via email, telephone, and text message/instant
messaging. For those students who experience difficulties, the teacher
will give remedial activities.

Since education takes place at home, the parents play a vital role as
facilitators. Their primary function is modular learning is to establish a
connection and guide to their child. (Flip Science, 2020).

According to the Meta-analysis on the effects of Distance Learning on

K-12 students’ outcomes (Cavanaugh, Gillan, Kromrey, Hess, Blomeyer,
2004), Distance education is somehow as effective as classroom
instruction. In other words, students who undergo online or modular
distance learning can have a quality education provided that the basic
needs are met.

However, in the study conducted by (Olivo, 2021), parents claimed

that time allotment in the completion of learning activities was
insufficient since the activities were so many. In addition, some parents
said that some topics in the modules are so hard to ven for them and they
cannot help and guide their children in answering the learning tasks. The
research then recommended a review of the learning activities and
conduct seminars for parents to guide them in assisting their children
during their “classes “at home.

This article will be emphasized the negative and positive effects of

modular distance learning both in international and local areas to assess
the effectiveness of MDL with regards to the level of academic
performance of students.
