BUSINESS TRANSLATION (11 WEEKS)

1. MIDTERM TEST: WEEK 9: 10% of the total grade

The MIDTERM TEST has the same format as that of the final exam (E-V & V-E), but
the passages to be translated are longer. Time allowed: 120 minutes. Digital devices
with access to the Internet are allowed. (UPDATED BUSINESS NEWS FROM BBC,
CNN, CNA, NHK, CNBC, ETC.) All digital devices with connection to the Intert are
ALLOWED.

PLS BRING YOUR OWN PAPER FOR THE MIDTERM TEST.

2. GROUP PRESENTATION (8% of the total mark):

+ 6 groups, 4-5 members/group

WEEK 10: Groups 1, 2 & 3
WEEK 11: Groups 4, 5 & 6

3. (Physical and mental) Attendance and participation: 12% of the total mark (You are
allowed to skip 3 sessions at most, but your attendance and participation score will be
(almost) 0. PLEASE DO NOT SEEK MY PERMISSION BY EMAIL, unless you can
provide evidence.

GROUP PRESENTATIONS

Powerpoint files are COMPULSORY.

 TASK 1 (COMPULSORY, WITH POWERPOINT SLIDES): a glossary (of at

least 30 lexical items/ terms) of a designated business area (illustrative photos/
examples/ short clips should be included, i.e. put the lexical items/ terms into
sentences to clarify usage). These 30 items should be OUTSIDE of the two
passages chosen for TASK 2.
  TASK 2 (COMPULSORY, WITH POWERPOINT SLIDES): translate one
passage (250-350 words) from E into V, and another passage (250-350 words)
from V into E in the same designated topic at INTERMEDIATE or UPPER
INTERMEDIATE level, with difficult words/ phrases/ structures highlighted.

 A mini English game, preferably a business-related game: OPTIONAL (groups

with a game will have bonus points).

 Time allotted for the group presentations

- without a game: approximately 30 mins
- with a game: approximately 35-40 mins (The group member who prepares and
hosts the game has their contribution recognized, just like other parts of the
presentation.)

can take notes) TO MY EMAIL AT LEAST ONE DAY BEFORE YOUR
PRESENTATION DAY.

4.INDIVIDUAL PROJECT (20% OF THE TOTAL GRADE):

- Choose a 250-350 word passage on ONE BUSINESS AREA OF YOUR OWN
CHOICE as the source text and look for its translation that is available on the news or
journal articles (the translation is DONE by professional translators, NOT Google
Translate or other machine translation apps. Provide your comments on the use of
lexical items, structures, and translation method/strategies that the translator adopted
AND correct the errors if any/give your own suggestions (E-V OR V-E)
- Do your work in the PDF format, with some graphic design if you can
