Security Camera Lights:

What Do They Mean?

By: Gilbert Cho October 16, 2015

This post was updated on December 30, 2019.

When I picture an ever-blinking red light on a

security camera, I imagine an old school CCTV
camera system. Or it might call to mind a fake
camera, à la 1990, back when real cameras were
too expensive for most people to own.

Today’s higher quality—and real—security

cameras have traded that constant red blink for
multifunctional LED lights that indicate the
camera’s status.

Guide to security camera LED

colors

Red, green, blue, solid, or blinking—what does

it all mean? The status LED on your security
camera conveys a lot of information if you
understand what it’s telling you.

Use this handy guide to know your camera’s

status and what you need to do to get that
coveted, solid-green light. We’ve modeled this
guide after the different light indicators on our
Frontpoint Indoor Camera, but it applies to
many security cameras on the market.

The Frontpoint Indoor Camera captures crystal-clear video

with high-resolution technology.

LED status reference guide

Solid green light on security camera

A solid green light on a security camera means

there is both a local network and an internet
connection.

Flashing green light on security camera

A flashing green light on a security camera

means there is a local network connection only
—no internet connection.

Solid red light on security camera

A solid red light on a security camera means

there is NOT a local internet or an internet
connection.

Flashing red light on security camera

A flashing red light on a security camera means

the camera is booting.

LED setup reference guide

Flashing blue light on security camera

A flashing blue light on a security camera means

you are ready for the WiFi protected setup. To
enter the WiFi protected setup mode, push the
WiFi protected setup button and release it when
the light begins flashing blue (about three
seconds).

Flashing white light on security camera

A flashing white light on a security camera

means you are ready for the standard WiFi mode
setup. To enter the standard WiFi mode setup,
push the WiFi protected setup button and
release it when the light begins flashing white
(about six seconds).

Flashing red and green light on security camera

A flashing red and green light on a security

camera means you about to perform a factory
reset. To enter the factory reset mode, push the
WiFi protected setup button and release it when
the light begins flashing green and red (about
15 seconds).

WARNING: A factory reset will restore the

factory default settings to the camera. If it’s
already installed, the camera may need to be
removed from the Frontpoint account and re-
added after a factory reset.

Troubleshooting security cameras

If you have issues connecting the camera to the

account, power cycle the camera (unplug the
power jack from the camera and then plug it
back in to restore power). If issues persist, you
can conduct a factory reset.

Is there a setting that would keep a

camera pointed out a window from
recording EVERY SINGLE car's
headlights at night, but won't impact
it's overall sensitivity? I don't get any
nuisance recordings during the day
(cars passing by the driveway), but at
night every single headlight becomes a
video clip. help?

Susan, we don't recommend

that you point your camera
towards the direction of traffic
or where traffic would be
because the changing pixels
and motion will interfere with
what the camera is catching
every single day. However, we
can definitely have someone
from our Support Team reach
out to you to help you
troubleshoot your camera and
your camera's current settings
to help address those extra
clips you're getting. At this
time I'm having a little trouble
finding you as a customer in
our system based on the
information you provided in
your comments, so when you
find a free moment can you
please email me at
WeCare@frontpointsecurity.co
m with the name on your
account? Or if you prefer,
please give our Support Team a
call when you have time and
they would be happy to work
with you on this!

what does it means when the indoor

Mat, if your indoor camera is

blinking blue it means that the
camera is trying to find a
router. This could indicate that
the WPS button is stuck down,
however, we recommend that
you give our Support Team a
call at your earliest
convenience so we can
investigate that camera and
help you get everything up and
running. Thanks for your
feedback and please let us
know if you have any other
questions going forward!

What does it mean if I notice a little

blue light placed exactly where a mini-
blind slat has been lifted? It looks
directly into my kitchen from my
neighbor's bedroom.

What does it mean when the status

light is green and the other lights
around it are red.

Wayne, great question! The

solid green status light
indicates that your camera is
connected and working
properly. Those red lights that
you are seeing around the
camera could be a reflection of
the infrared lights within the
camera. We hope this
answered your question and
ask that you please let us know
if you have any other questions
going forward!
