Shear Design – Components of shear resistance

1. VRd,c shear capacity without shear reinforcement

2. VRd,max , max shear capacity if unlimited shear reinforcement is provided

3. VRd,s, shear capacity with shear reinforcement

For shear Cmax is limited to C50/60, to clause 3.1.2(2), in the

UK National Annex.

Shear Design – Beams without Shear Reinforcement

Eurocode uses an arch model as basis for design without shear

links.

Shear Design – Beams with Shear Reinforcement

Eurocode uses a strut and tie (“truss”) model for beams with shear links.
Shear resistance with shear reinforcement excludes any concrete shear
resistance.

Shear Design – Calculation Procedure

1. Calculate VRd,c

If VRd,c > VEd, you are done. Only minimum shear links required. Otherwise…

2. Calculate VRd,max, max shear capacity, starting with cot θ=2.5. Use lower cot θ if
necessary.

If VRd,max < VEd, for cot θ =1, you have to use a larger section!

3. Calculate required links and minimum links necessary

4. Check the extent of shear links required.

5. Maximum allowable link spacing is 0.75d.

Beams – Shear Reinforcement

Links must be effectively anchored.

Minimum shear reinforcement: ρw,min = (0.08 √fck) / fyk

Maximum longitudinal spacing: sl,max = 0.75d (1 + cot α)

Maximum transverse spacing: st,max = 0.75d ≤ 600mm
