written. these inscriptions were written in the Brahmi
script and the language was Prakrit or Pali. in these
inscriptions the messages to the people were inscribed to
promote dhamma.
There are 14 rock edicts and 7 pillar inscriptions.
The stone pillars were carved out from rocks and
polished. These pillars were crowned with capitals; they
included lions and bulls. The lion capital found at Sarnath
is the national emblem of India. The Ashoka chakra
carved in the lion capital is part of India's national flag.

The high Himalayas act as a natural barrier against
foreign invaders in ancient times. These mountains
protect our country from the cold winter winds of the
north. They cause rainfall and are a source of perennial
rivers.
The fertile Indo gangetic plains is more suited for
agriculture and is called the food bowl of India.
The peninsula plateau is the storehouse of minerals. The
coastal plains are dotted with ports and harbors which
help in trade.
Therefore, all these physical features provide a
geographical unity to our country.

functions and solid waste management is an important
function of the Municipal Corporation.
Maintaining the hygiene of the city and disposing its
waste is a very crucial element of governance.
The Municipal Corporation has a separate department for
collection and disposal of city waste.
Earlier waste was this post off by creating landfills, but
now solid waste is converted into organic manure.
The municipal corporation along with the help of NGOs
are also recycling city waste into productive goods such
as bags rugs etc
whenever the municipal corporation do not carry out this
important obligatory function the results can be disastrous
for example in Surat a plague epidemic broke out
because of the filth accumulation in the city.

Buddhism.
The similarities.
Both were started by members of the Kshatrriya Varna.
Both were opposed to Brahminical supremacy they
admitted people from lower castes and women.
Both were simple religions without any elaborate or
expensive rituals and practices
They both taught in the language of the masses
The difference
Buddha stayed away from the discussion on God while
Mahavira denied the existence of God altogether
Jainism laid undue stress on nonviolence while
Buddhism avoided extremes.
Jainism laid more emphasis on austerity as compared to
Buddhism.
Buddhism did not preach the followers to give up the use
of clothes unlike Jainism.
Buddhism spread beyond India while Jainism remained
confined to India.
Buddhism attacked the varna system while Jainism was
not that vocal in its protest.

Ashoka adopted a policy of dhamma.
He did this after the war of Kalinga in which he saw the
horror of the war, this made him adopt a policy of being a
pacifist.
The word drama is Prakrit word of Sanskrit word Dharma.
Ashoka Dharma is not a religious policy, but it related to
norms of social behavior.
The emperor believed it was the moral duty of the king to
teach his subjects these norms.
The principles of dhamma included basic social behavior
like obedience to one's parents and elders, proper
treatment to slave, servants and dependents.
Idea of nonviolence was central to the policy of Dhamma
To be truthful and have morality and purity of heart.
Spending wealth wisely and not accumulating wealth
was advised.
the policy of dhamma also included welfare measures like
planting of trees, digging off wells and construction of
canals. Rest houses were built on the highways and
hospitals for humans and animals.

Ashoka spread his ideas of dhamma with the help of rock
and pillar edicts.
He appointed special officers called dhamma
mahamattas, these officers were instructed by the king to
read the edicts to the people who were unable to read
Ashoka sent messengers to other countries like Sri Lanka
from a Syria, Greece, and Egypt to spread the idea of
dhamma
The reason for the policy of dhamma was because the
Mauryan empire was a large empire which including
people from different religions and by this way there was
moral unification of his empire.
