?THE LIFE OF RIZAL? Jose Rizal was the greatest genius ever produced by our race.

God has given him many talents. He developed such talents by patient study and hard work. He bacam e a physician, poet, novelist, essayist, dramatist, historian, painter, sculptor , architect, musicain, linguistic, bibliophile, translator, educator, surveyor, engineer, farmer, economist, naturalist, inventor, magician and prophet. Unlike many geniuses in world history, he used his God-given talents not for his person al benefit, but for the glory of God, country and humanity. ?A Genius is Born? JOSE RIZAL - He was brn in Calamba, Laguna, near midnight of June 19, 1861. - He was the seventh of the eleven children of Francisco Mercado Rizal a nd Teodora Alonso Realonda. - He was baptized 3 days after his birth, June 22, 1861, at the Catholic church of Calamba. ?Father Rufino Collantes - The priest who baptized Jose Rizal ?Father Pedro Casanas - The god-father f Jose Rizal ?San Jose / St. Joseph - Is whom Donya Teodora named her new-born baby Jose. - He was born with an unusual big head, which beacame a good omen. ?The Parents of Jose Rizal? FRANCISCO his quiet MERCADO RIZAL Father of Jose Rizal He was born in Binan, Laguna, on May 11, 1818. A prosperous farmer of Calamba On June 28, 1848, he married Teodora Alonso Realonda. He was quiet, brave and independent-minded. From him, Rizal inherited nature, frugality and love of freedom. He died in Manila on January 5,1898, at the age of 80.

TEODORA ALONSO REALONDA - Mother of Jose Rizal - She was born in Manila n November 8, 1826. - An intelligent wman with great business ability. - She was a graduate of Santa Rosa College, Manila. - From her Rizal inherited his love for boks and talent for litearature. - She died in Manila on August 16, 1911, at the age of 85. ?The Name "Rizal"? MERCADO - Original surname of Rizal's family. - Adopted in 1713 by Doming Lamco, Rizal's great-great-grandfather. ?1849, Governor Claveria's decree arrived in Calamba and ordered all Filipino Fa milies to adopt a new family names from a list of Spanish surnames. PACIANO (1851-1930) - older brather of Jose Rizal - he joined the Revolution against Spain and became a general - he died a bachelor NARCISA (1852-1939) - her pet name was Sisa - she married Antonio Lopez, a school teacher of Morong, Rizal OLIMPIA (1855-1887) - Ypia was her pet name - she married Silvestre Ubaldo, a telegraph operator from Manila LUCIA (1857-1919) - she married Mariano Herbosa of Manila MARIA (1859-1945) - her pet name was Biang - she married Danie Faustino Cruz of Binan JOSE (1861-1896) - our greatest genius and hero - he married Josephine Bracken, a pretty Irish girl from Hong Kong - his pet name was Pepe CONCEPCION (1862-1865) - she died at the age of three - her pet name was Concha JOSEFA (1865-1945) - her pet name was Panggoy - she died an old maid TRINIDAD (1868-1951) - Trining was her pet name - she died an old maid SOLEDAD(1870-1929) - youngest of the Rizal children - her pet name was Chleng - she married Pantaleon Quintero of Calamba ?The Rizal Home? ? The Rizal family, by honest and hard work, was one of the richest families in Calamba. They were able to build a large stone house, own a beautiful carruaje a nd educate their children in the Colleges of Manila. ? Rizal spent a happy childhood in the town of Calamba. - as early as 3 he played everyday at the family garden with his aya and brother and sisiters. - at night, he loved to go to the azotea to watch the beautiful moon and listen to his aya's fairy tales and legends. - his 1st sorrow was caused by the death of his younger sister, concepti on. - he often went to church and pray the novenas. - his father gave him a horse, and he also learned to ride one. First Visit to Antipolo ? On June 6, 1868, Jose, accompanied by his father left Calamba for the pilgrima ge to the famous shrine of the Virgin of Antipolo in Antipolo. It was Jose's 1st voyage across Laguna de Bay. They rode in a casco. After praying at the shrine, they went to visit Saturnina, who was a student at La Concordia College in Mani la. The First Teacher of Rizal and The Story of the Young Moth ? Donya Teodora, his mother herself, was the first teacher of Jose. At the age o f 3 she taught Rizal the alphabet and the prayers. she also encurage Jose to con tinue writing poems. ? One night Donya Teodora was reading the story of "The Moth and the Flame" in a book, El Amigos de los Ninos(the friend of the children). At the end of the sto ry Jose was deeply attracted by the death of the brave little moth but the light that caused the death of the little moth appeared to him more beautiful than ev er.
