Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.

When we think of a conductor, we probably conjure up the classic image of a leader who
stands in front of a group of musical artists and uses a thin wooden stick to direct a performance. This
profession dates back to the middle ages, and has taken on many forms and followed many changing
traditions throughout the centuries. But what role does a conductor actually play?

Conductors direct and shape a piece of music played by groups such as choirs, marching
bands, and orchestras, from its infancy in rehearsal to the eventual performance in front of an
audience. They are often paired with a particular performing group throughout many performances,
guiding the artists through rehearsals and giving vocal feedback to shape the outcome of the musical
piece. The exact nature of a conductor's duties can vary from one venue to another, and are also
determined by the skill level of the particular group being directed, which can range from amateur to
professional.

Even before the final performance, a conductor must be able to direct musicians throughout
the rehearsals and give constructive comments and criticisms to ensure the best possible result. He or
she must become the leader of a group, applying personal understanding and expertise of a musical
composition as a whole to guide those who are only familiar with some specific elements of its
performance.

The position requires a considerable amount of skill beyond musical knowledge as well. Firm
leadership is required to keep the ensemble on cue and working together to convey the musical piece
as a unified whole. Furthermore, the ability to hear the group in its entirety but to still be able to pick
out the pitch of individual instruments is very important to keeping the overall harmony.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.

In early March, New York resident Sadie Millard was visiting her boyfriend in Bermuda as the
city began to shut down due to COVID-19. And now, she is applying for a new one-year residential
certificate via the Work From Bermuda programme, which would allow her to legally live and work
remotely for up to 12 months there. “My thought was, if I’m going to be here or there, I’d rather be in
Bermuda where I feel much safer given the strong rules and regulations the government has set up
for testing and managing the pandemic,” she explains.

Government officials in Bermuda, which reopened its borders on 1 July, noticed that tourists
were asking how to extend their 90-day entry visas. Meanwhile, the tourism community saw visitors
doing things that they have never done in the past such as joining gyms and booking villas for
months on end during their stay. “That was the lightbulb moment for us,” says Glenn Jones, CEO of
the Bermuda Tourism Authority. Bermuda is just one example of these emerging remote-work
programmes. Another tourism-dependent country, Georgia, announced a similar project in July.

While most of these schemes arose as speedy remedies to buffer the hard-hit tourism sector
with long-term travellers who pose fewer Covid-19 risks than in-and-out visitors, others have been
planned for quite some time. For instance, the Digital Nomad Visa from Estonia is a project two years
in the making and its 1 August launch date just happened to coincide with the pandemic. “We
launched this visa because we saw an opportunity that no country was addressing,” explains Ott
Vatter, managing director at e-Residency for the Republic of Estonia. “There was a substantial amount
of people who were working illegally on holiday visas, so we thought, why not have the government
solve this?”

With few studies conducted in advance, the economic effects that these programmes may have
on the nations and territories promoting them remain unclear. What is clear, however, is that the
number of people able to apply for these kinds of visas may be growing. Marilyn Devonish, a flexible-
work strategist based in London, says there’s been “a seismic shift in the way the world works, with
remote and flexible working very likely to become the norm after the pandemic is over once
organisations learn how to effectively manage and motivate remote employees”.

Some are still sceptical about these hastily formed remote worker visa programmes, saying that
they are only being used as a marketing tool with a view to increasing visitor count. That being said,
the emergence of these programmes may mean that an entirely new segment of the workforce that
never before considered working from abroad will now realise its potential allure.
