INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY
We invest in shares to build our wealth in the long run. While some people view shares to be a risky investment,
many studies have proved that putting your money in the right shares for a long period of time (five to 10 years)
can provide inflation-beating returns — and be a better investment option than real estate and gold.

People also have short-term strategies while investing in share markets. While shares can be volatile over a
short period of time, investing in the right shares can help traders make quick profits.

Earlier, stockbrokers would converge around Banyan trees to conduct trades of stocks. As the number of
brokers increased and the streets overflowed, they simply had no choice but to relocate from one place to
another. Finally in 1854, they relocated to Dalal Street, the place where the oldest stock exchange in Asia – the
Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) – is now located. It is also India’s first stock exchange and has since then
played an important role in the Indian stock markets. Even today, the BSE Sensex remains one of the
parameters against which the robustness of the Indian economy and finance is measured.

In 1993, the National Stock Exchange or NSE was formed. Within a few years, trading on both the exchanges
shifted from an open outcry system to an automated trading environment.

This shows that Indian stock markets have a strong history. Yet, at the face of it, especially when you consider
to invest in share market, it often seems like a maze. But once you start, you will realize that the investment
fundamentals are not too complicated. One of the basics of investment fundamentals is financial planning. Read
more about the importance of financial planning.

SHARE MARKET BASICS.

Demat Account and Trading Account

Physical share certificates are converted into electronic format is known as “Dematerializationor De mat”. Currently
almost 99 percent of shares traded in Indian stock exchanges are indemat mode. You have to open a demat account if you
want to buy or sell stocks, just like a bank account where actual money is replaced by shares. Demat account allows you
to buy, sell and transact shares without the endless paperwork and delays. Similarly, a trading account works as an
intermediary between the savings account and demat account. When you want to buy shares, first the money is transferred
from your savings account to trading account. After that required amount of shares are purchased and finally shares are
stored in electronic form in the demat account. It works just in opposite way during the time of selling shares.

Sensex and Nifty

12 | P a g e
The Sensex is basically an indicator that gives you an idea about whether most of the stocks have gone up or
have gone down. It is an indicator of all the major companies of the Bombay Stock Exchange. BSE came out
with this stock index in the year 1986 that subsequently became the barometer of the Indian stock market
("What are the,"). It is calculated taking into consideration prices of 30 largest and most actively traded stocks
of the BSE listed companies. The base year of Sensex is 1978-79 and the base value is 100. Similarly, Nifty is
an indicator of all the major companies listed with National Stock Exchange. It is calculated based on 50 major
stocks listed with NSE. And the base year is taken as 1995 and the base value is 1000.

What is a Stock ?
In simple words, stock is a share in the ownership of a company. Holding a company's stock means that you are
one of the many owners (shareholders) of a company and you have a claim to everything the company owns. As
an owner, you are entitled to your share of the company's earnings as well as any voting rights attached to the
stock Earlier days a stock was represented by a stock certificate which was a piece of paper that was proof of
your ownership. But in today’s computer age, your stock is stored electronically by your broker. This is done to
make the shares easier to trade. In the past, when a person wanted to sell his shares that person physically took
the certificates down to the broker. But now stocks can be purchased with a click of mouse. Most stocks are
traded on exchanges where both buyers and sellers meet and decide on a price. The purpose of a stock exchange
is to facilitate the exchange of securities between buyers and sellers, and reducing the risks of investing. Some
exchanges are physical locations where transactions are carried out on a trading floor. The other type of
exchange is virtual, composed of a network of computers where trades are made electronically

What is share market ?

A share market is where shares are either issued or traded in.

A stock market is similar to a share market. The key difference is that a stock market helps you trade financial
instruments like bonds, mutual funds, derivatives as well as shares of companies. A share market only allows
trading of shares.

The key factor is the stock exchange – the basic platform that provides the facilities used to trade company
stocks and other securities. A stock may be bought or sold only if it is listed on an exchange. Thus, it is the
meeting place of the stock buyers and sellers. India's premier stock exchanges are the Bombay Stock
Exchange and the National Stock Exchange.

Types of Market
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF SHARE MARKETS – PRIMARY AND SECOND MARKETS.

13 | P a g e
Primary Market:

This where a company gets registered to issue a certain amount of shares and raise money. This is also called
getting listed in a stock exchange.

A company enters primary markets to raise capital. If the company is selling shares for the first time, it is called
an Read more factors to consider before investing in an IPO.

Secondary Market:

Once new securities have been sold in the primary market, these shares are traded in the secondary market. This
is to offer a chance for investors to exit an investment and sell the shares. Secondary market transactions are
referred to trades where one investor buys shares from another investor at the prevailing market price or at
whatever price the two parties agree upon.

Normally, investors conduct such transactions using an intermediary such as a broker, who facilitates the
process. Different brokers offer different plans.

How to invest in share market ?

A stockbroker, also known as a broker is a financial market representative who operates in securities. Their primary job
role dictates obtainment of purchase and sale orders and execution of the same. Market participants or investors rely on
their expertise and knowledge regarding market dynamics to invest in stocks and other investment options.
Share brokers either work individually or as part of a brokerage firm.

A broker is officiated post their registration with a recognized stock echanges such as BSE or by working for a brokerage
firm. Such brokers levy a charge in the form of commission, fee, or mark-up. This charge widely varies from broker to
broker. Some dealers charge a flat fee, whereas some levy a percentage of the securities value traded.

The share market brokers’ foray is dominated by discount brokers. This set of brokers has mustered widespread popularity
because of their low charges which make the security market more accessible to laymen. A key distinction between a
discount broker and regular a stockbroker is that the latter is required to have a profuse knowledge of the market and has
to go through arduous examination routines while these parameters are not compulsory for a discount broker.

Types of Investment
Investing is the act of committing money to an endeavor with the expectation of obtaining an additional income. Simply,
it means putting the money to work for you and maximizing the earning potential. The more time you give your
investments, the more you are able to accelerate the income potential of the original investment .There are various ways to
invest money such as:

Bonds: They are called fixed-income securities and refer to any securities that are founded on debt. When you purchase a
bond, you are lending out your money to a company or government. In return, they agree to give you interest on your
money and eventually pay you back the amount you lent out. Bonds are relatively safety but the rate of return is lower.

Stocks: When you purchase stocks or equities you become a part owner of the business. This entitles you to vote at the
shareholders' meeting and allows you to receive any profits that the company allocates to its owners. Stocks are volatile
and they fluctuate in value on a daily basis. When you buy a stock, you aren't guaranteed anything. But compared to
bonds, stocks provide relatively high potential returns.

14 | P a g e
Mutual Funds: A mutual fund is a collection of stocks and bonds. When you buy a mutual fund, you are
pooling your money with a number of other investors which enables you to pay a professional manager to select
specific securities for you. The major advantage of a mutual fund is that you can invest your money without the
time or the experience that are often needed to choose a sound investment.

Futures: A futures contract is just what it's called a contract. It is not equity in a stock or commodity. It is a
contract to make or take delivery of a product in the future, at a price set in the present. In formalized trading of
futures contracts on exchanges, agreements specify price, quantity and the month of delivery. Futures can be
used either to hedge or to speculate on the price movement of the underlying asset.

Options: It is a financial derivative that represents a contract sold by one party (option writer) to another party
(option holder). The contract offers the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy (call) or sell (put) a
security or other financial asset at an agreed-upon price during a certain period of time or on a specific date
("Option,").

Types of Share Market Brokers

The different types of share brokers are listed below –

Traditional or full-time brokers: This kind of brokers provides a vast assortment of products and
services to its customers. These services involve securities’ trading, investment advice, retirement planning,
management of investment portfolio, etc. Full-time stockbrokers charge a hefty commission, however, given the
range of their services, such cost might justify.

As was earlier mentioned, such brokers go through rigorous training and examinations to attain the job and thus
have in-depth knowledge regarding the stock market. Therefore, they are adequately trained to make a bid on
your behalf and steer your portfolio to its maximum earning potential and minimise risks on it.
Discount brokers: Discount or online stock brokers dominate the band of brokers. Along with their
inexpensive nature, they also offer convenience to the laymen in terms of time and place utility. Market
participants do not need to personally meet discount brokers and carry out their investment through the internet.

Investors with minimal disposable income can also start investing in the stock market through discount brokers.
However, not all discount brokers offer the same level of expertise as a traditional broker and thus are a less
profitable option for companies and individuals who can afford hefty investment corpus and costs.

The following table illustrates the distinguishing features of the above mentioned types of brokers.

NEED OF THE PROJECT
According to International Monetary Fund, both advanced economies and emerging market and developing
economies are in recession for the first time since the Great Depression of 1930.

For the calendar year 2020, growth in advanced economies is projected to de-grow at 6.1 percent. Emerging
market and developing economies with normal growth levels well above advanced economies are also projected
to have negative growth rates of 1.0 percent in the calendar year 2020. The social and economic challenges
posed by COVID19 have emphasized the true value of identifying business strengths and weaknesses, as
well as in recognizing and mitigating material risks by understanding the practices followed by various
companies of the same fraternity and diaspora in the upkeep of their businesses.

FOR THE INDUSTRY - At a macroeconomic level, for capital markets as well as for the industry, the near
future would be very strongly influenced by the outcomes pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic and the
manner and duration of recovery. In an uncertain and unprecedented environment that we are likely to face in
the coming term due the hit of COVID19, the most critical thing will be to focus strongly on cost efficiency,
which comes by allocating the resource at the targeted audience under the ambit of growing competition.

FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC - The recent financial event has emphasized the need for understanding of
financial decision, financing instruments and strategies used in financial and investment management. It
becomes important to have knowledge about basic s of stock market and share brokers as well as to develop
familiarity with the stock market and stock broker.

17 | P a g e

 To analyze the factors basis which we can justify the better performance of a firm above others and
especially over SMC.

 To develop competitive outlook in response of major players of the share market.

simultaneously incorporating the recommendations if applicable.

 Most importantly to identify and interpret todays leading stock broker by reviewing several individuals.

LIMITATIONS

 Constraint on time

 As there are many experts in the matter the data given here may not be entirely correct considering
difference in opinion.

 The respondents were not answering with interest, the targeted audience was broader than the responses
received

 Could only get information from some of the articles, journals, magazines, guides & friends

18 | P a g e
 The data received might be inappropriate.

 The surveys were open for 6 days each.

CHAPTER TWO
Literature review

20 | P a g e
Walia N. and Kumar R. (2012) Research report examined the investors' preference for traditional trading and
online trading, investor's perception on Online trading & comparing current usage of online trading and offline
trading. This study reveals that out of every 100 investors only 28 trade online, which points out a question as
why investors were not able to realize the importance of technology in stock trading. The major findings of the
study are the Indian investors are more conservative, they do not change brokers for trading, whereas net traders
are more comfortable with online trading for its transparency and complete control of the terminal.

Tor Wallin Andreassen & Line Lervik explores that Customer‟s perceived relative attractiveness today is the
key driver of future intent in both business and consumer contexts. in Business customers use perceived quality
of past and present deliverables as the primary qualifier of future repurchases intention. Next in the consumer
market both perceived relative attractiveness today and tomorrow have an impact on future intent. Here they
measured that perceived relative attractiveness today and expected future relative attractiveness is using one
item of each.

Jaiswal M., Vashist D. and Kumar A (2009) traces the growth of online trading from the year 2000 using
statistics on volume of online trading from the year 2000 using statistics on volume of online trading, number of
e- broking firms, brokerages and demographic patterns. Online trading has dramatically changed the way stock
business has been conducted over the years.

In the study conducted by Nidhi walia and Ravinder kumar (2007) examined the investor's preference for
traditional trading and online trading. The major findings of the study were that Indian investors are more
conservative, they do not change easily and Indian traditional traders still choose brokers for trading. But
Internet traders are more comfortable with online trading because of its transparency and complete control over
the terminal

The study conducted by Yingzi Xu, Robert Goedegebuure and Beatrice van der Heijden (2006) on
"Customer Perception, Customer Satisfaction, and Customer Loyalty within Chinese Securities Business:
Towards a Mediation Model for Predicting Customer Behavior" found service quality perceived by customers
has a direct, significant effect on customer satisfaction. Also the relationship between perceived service value
and customer loyalty is found to be determined by customer satisfaction

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

22 | P a g e
One of the most important uses of research methodology is that it helps in identifying the problem, collecting,
analyzing the required information data and providing an alternative solution to the problem .It also helps in
collecting the vital information that is required by the top management to assist them for the better decision
making both day to day decision and critical ones.

RESEARCH DESIGN
Research design adopted for this research is “Descriptive Research “. It includes surveys and fact-finding
enquiries of different kinds. Structured Questionnaire Conducting Perception of the customers required the
preparation of a detailed questionnaire which could capture all possible areas of their agreed levels. Prior to
preparation of questionnaire I circulated a questionnaire to all all the groups regarding the objectives of my
study. The questionnaire included eighteen questions.

This report is based on primary as well secondary data, primary data collection was given more importance
since it is overhearing factor in attitude studies.

Segment 1 and 2 are based on secondary data.

Segment 3 and 4 are based completely on primary data. Secondary data was used only for the reference.
Primary data has been collected by interacting with various people. The secondary data has been collected
through various annual reports and websites.

SAMPLING & DATA COLLECTION METHODS

The population is finite and “Simple random sampling method” will be adopted for selecting samples from the
Infinite one. Some of the persons were not so responsive. There is a possibility of error in data collection
because many of investors may have not given actual answers of my questionnaire. Sample size was much
larger. Many telegram groups were targeted however many respondents were reluctant to divulge information
which can affect the validity of all responses.

Survey 1 is attributed to general public including – Friends, neighbors, family and others

Survey 2 specifically targeted only investors of stock market from various telegram groups.

INTERPRETING THE BEST BROKER TODAY
When you invest in the stock market, you expect good returns from it. Hence, it is crucial to deal with the right
broker.

execute trades on your behalf. At present, with the onset of technology and digitization, you can easily find
ample options available to you in the market.

As it reveals from the survey taken, that one of the most prominent stockbrokers in the market today is
ICICI Securities.

Maximum respondents believe that ICICI is a competitor of SMC and that it is the best according to
today’s time scenarios.

Therefore let’s interpret one of the best broker according to people today.

ICICI - Background
Operating for the past 65 years and creating its presence across the country, ICICI Securities is part of ICICI
Group and India's top financial service provider offering banking and other financial services. It trades with its
retail investment scope with ICICI Direct. It presents e-trading and investment services to customers through
ICICI Direct.

They serve investment products such as Online Equity & Derivatives Trading, Mutual Fund, Initial Public
Offers & Fixed Deposits, Bonds, NCD, wealth management related products, Loans for home, Loan
against Securities, etc., all in one portal.

Whats making them so attractive -

They offer two types of accounts: one is Demat & Trading A/c, the other one is a 3-in-1 account, which includes
ICICI Saving Bank Account, ICICI Trading Account, and ICICI demat Account Since its commencement, the
company has earned more than 4.5 million customer base through this platform's electronic brokerage platform
markets over 4,600 sub-brokers, authorized persons, independent financial associates, and independent
associates.

1. A Tri-account integrates your banking, broking, and Demat accounts. No human interference is
required. This works well in an e-trading environment.

from selling stock is available in the ICICI Securities bank account as soon as the ICICIDirect receives
it.

7. Via Valid Till Cancelled, traders and customers can place buy or sell limit orders for 45 days.

However ICICI has the following flaws as well-

1. ICICIDirect Brokerage is very expensive. Subscribing to ICICI direct Prime or prepaid brokerage plans
can only reduce the Brokerage by subscribing to ICICIdirect Prime or prepaid brokerage plans.
2. ICICIDirect doesn't offer commodity trading.
3. ICICI securities minimum brokerage charge as per the official I-Secure Plan is ₹35 per trade; it is
extremely high for novice traders.
4. It charges flat ₹0.05 per share brokerage on stock pricing up to ₹10; it makes it quite challenging to
trade in penny stocks.
5. ICICI Direct imposes ₹25 per call for call & trade after the first 20 free calls in a month.

However,

1. ICICI Securities has more than 280 offices across 80 cities in India and they provide trading in both
exchanges NSE BSE as well as MCX.
2. Recently in September 2020 , ICICI direct has partnered with MCX (Multi commodity exchange) to
offer commodity derivative trading, however as of now there is only facility to trade in commodity
futures and not options but may be in coming days you would see the options trading in commodity
segment to start.
3. What makes ICICI direct different from other is the strong hold and backup from ICICI Bank,
India’s top private bank. Other than this there are no charges to open an account so nothing to lose.
4. Moreover, ICICIdirect has also tied up with Sensibull, India’s first and largest Options
Trading platform. Sensibull offers easy to trade, smart and profitable pre-built Options Strategies for
your prediction.
5. All these strategies come with small losses and loss protection, so no matter where the market goes,
your losses won’t go above a small fixed number.
6. Also, the kind of technological advancement in there trading platforms, apart from this they also
offer PMS (portfolio management services), insurance, loans, gold investment, research advisory,
mutual funds, ETF and lot more.

IPO, Mutual Funds, Bonds, and Postal Savings Schemes, all from one website. Insurance is also available from
ICICI Lombard, but ICICI Direct Brokerage is slightly higher compared to others. The charges can be brought
down by subscribing to ICICI direct Prime or prepaid brokerage plans. Also, the ICICI minimum brokerage

ATM- Normally, cash proceeds on selling shares are credited to your trading account in T+2 days.

With the Equity ATM facility, customers receive money up to ₹ 50,000 per day within 30 minutes of the order's
execution. This facility is available for the sale of over 600 BSE stocks free. ICICI Securities charges flat ₹0.05

CONCLUSION and RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY of the project and MAJOR FINDINGS
The stock market has become an attractive investment destination for many investors, and the stock market has
grown significantly over the years. But many investors are afraid to invest in the stock market because of the
volatility seen in the stock market accompanied by their lack of knowledge associated with the market. Many
people who even would wish to invest in stocks get carried away by the rumors spreading in the market. Also
many people are fearful of the frauds taken over by the malicious people surrounding the market. People have
low level of trust not only with the market but also with the stock brokers. A stock broker who is a trusted
partner in the investment journey is seen as an intermediary and is given least importance. This reflects the
traditional mindset of the people who are not likely to ever invest their money in stocks which otherwise is a
regulated market having avenues of profit and growth for everyone. Risks are often made by investors in a large
stock market and there are fears among investors about the loss of hard-earned money. However, investors who
find in the stock market are high, investors need to bear the same amount of risk and also, investors must be
confident in the investment method, which they choose to ensure maximum return. However this outlook is
evident in only a miniscule number of investors while maximum are fearful of the market considering it based
on luck and giving unexpected profits and losses.

This study was therefore conducted to understand the various factors that affect their investment in stocks and
also the level of knowledge that people have within this area. This also identifies a source of investor awareness
regarding the stock market. Further, people who are already investing in stocks were surveyed to interpret their
association with SMC and other problems faced by them while having it as their stock broker. The list of
questions designed understood the point of view, behavior, and attitudes of investors and their level of
awareness. Many investors believe ICICI direct as one of the best brokers because of the trust that it has built in
the years and also because of the fact that it is one of the oldest players in the market. Therefore, this study
attempted to study the behavior of investors about the stock market.

RECOMMENDATIONS
1) Company can target the earning youth who are already indulged in the crypto currency hype and thus
can be easily made aware of stock market as well.
2) Company can try SMS blast and e mail blast to remove the fears associated investing in stocksas well as
with the recommendations daily.
3) Company should try to arrange of the program for the client.
4) Company should try to incorporate sessions on the website portal itself about “how to invest in stocks”,
similar to Angel Broking.
5) Company should try to get less brokerage charges.
6) Company should try to publish their research findings outside in public to gain the limelight and must
improve message service system to increase the base of transactions.
7) Company should try to help client on the bases of wealth maximization.
8) Company must follow aggressive advertising policies by first going live on radio. Repetitive audios can
land a better impact on the people.
9) Company can advertise frequently in any national daily.
10) SMC can garner audience from people across India by offering multiple plans and having competitive
strategy to ouster any leading broker in the market.
84 | P a g e
11) SMC should look heavily into complaint resolving mechanism at the earliest.
12) Company should advertise more about its discount broking arm thereby capturing the audience of
larger audience of ZERODHA and other discount broking firms.
13) Company should definitely target to spread its operations by offering 3 in 1 account later in the future.

CONCLUSION
It is seen that “IGNORANCE and UNAWARENESS” of the people is the main hurdle of taking ahead a stock
broking firm moreover each brokerage houses has its own pros and cons. They are liked and loathed by
investors for different reasons. The key ultimately is consistency in terms of giving quality service and
addressing customers’ demands and needs through the team of back office employees.

Further, the project has offered me valuable insights which will help me immensely in my future career. It has
helped me gain an important edge by making me prudent in terms of making investments in stocks with SMC as
my forever broker.

Limitations
This research might have some minor limitations because of limited sample size and the environment in which
data was collected. The data analysis and findings are based on the knowledge and experience of the
respondents. It is assumed that at the time of undertaking survey the best available respondent group was chosen
and the responses given by each one of them was genuine. If the respondents responded to the questionnaire
without any interest, attention or adequate knowledge regarding stock market, then the conclusions drawn from
this research might not become valid in real world.
