Definition

• Mass transit system refers to public shared transportation, such as trains, buses, ferries
etc that can commute a larger number of passengers from origin to destination on
a no-reserved basis and in lesser time. It can also be termed as Public Transport.

Introduction
• The essential feature of mass transportation is that many people are carried in
the same vehicle (e.g., buses) or collection of attached vehicles (trains).

• This makes it possible to move people in the same travel corridor with greater
efficiency

• It can lead to lower costs to carry each person because the costs are shared by
many people

• Or the opportunity to spend more money to provide better service, or both.

How it works?
• Mass transit systems may be owned by private, profit-making companies or by
governments that may not operate for profit.

• Whether public or private, many mass transportation services are subsidized

because they cannot cover all their costs from fares charged to their riders

• BRT Peshawar got a subsidy of Rs. 2.8 billion for the year 2021-22 (KP Gov.)

• Such subsidies assure the availability of mass transit, which contributes to

making cities efficient and desirable places in which to live.

How it works?

The amount of space required to transport the same number of passengers: car, bicycle,
and bus.

02 Impacts

8
Environmental Impacts
• Mass transit system is believed to be more environmentally friendly than other
public transport facilities.

• Private vehicles emit about twice as much carbon monoxide and other volatile
organic compounds than public vehicles

• Mass transit reduces the number of cars on the road which in turn reduces the
pollution caused by individual cars.

• Mass transit systems also take up much less space than do the highways
needed for the movement of automobile traffic.

Social Impacts

Social Impacts
• All members of the society irrespective of their financial status, religion or cast
are able to travel which enhances the social integrity of the country.

• The necessity of a driving license is also eliminated. It is a blessing for those

individuals who are unable to drive.

• Mass Rapid Transit plays an important role in alleviating poverty or increasing

the standard of living of the poor.

• It is the poorest people who most depend upon public transit for access to jobs
and services

Social Impacts
• In some cities the urban poor pay up to 30% of their income on transport.

• The poor also typically live in lower rent areas on the outskirts of the city and in
some cases spend two to four hours commuting each day.

Economic Impacts
• Mass transit development can both improve the usefulness and efficiency of the
public transit system as well as result in increased business for commercial
developments and thus serves to improve the economy of the country.

• Mass transit systems offer considerable savings in labor, materials, and energy
over private transit systems.

• Also, mass transit allows a higher amount of load to be transported to far away
destinations in lesser time because of its reasonable capacity than private
vehicles

• Because of their larger capacity offering them to carry high efficient engines
they also help in saving fuels.

Other Positive Impacts
• Reduces congestion

• Saves Time

• Cost Effective
