FEAST OF ST. VINCENT FERRER

______________________________

MASS FOR THE ORDINATION

OF ONE DEACON

______________________________

SANTO DOMINGO CHURCH

QUEZON CITY

ONE DEACON | 1
INTRODUCTORY RITE
When everything is ready, the procession moves through the church to the altar
in the usual way, while the Entrance Antiphon with its psalm or another suitable
liturgical song is sung.

The one to be ordained precedes the Deacon who carries the Book of the
Gospels, which is to be used during the Mass and the Ordination. They are
followed by other Deacons, if present, by the concelebrating Priests, and finally,
by the Bishop and, slightly behind him, the two Deacons who assist him. When
they come to the altar, they make the required reverence, and each one goes
to his assigned place.

After the bishop genuflects or bows at the sanctuary, the minister receives the
miter and crozier (staff) from the Bishop and hands them off to the assigned altar
servers or places them at their respective table and stand.

After the Bishop venerates the altar with a kiss, he incenses the cross and the altar.
Then, with the minister, he goes to the chair.

SIGN OF THE CROSS AND GREETING

When the Entrance Chant is concluded, the Bishop and the faithful, standing,
sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the Bishop, facing the people,
says:

BISHOP: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.
PEOPLE : Amen.

The Bishop, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:

BISHOP: Peace be with you.

The people reply:

PEOPLE : And with your Spirit.

Then the Bishop may give a brief introduction regarding the celebration.

2 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

PENITENTIAL ACT
Then follows the Penitential Act, to which the Bishop invites the faithful, saying:

BISHOP: Brothers and sisters,

let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together the formula of general
confession:

BISHOP: I confess
PEOPLE : to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
And, striking their breast, they say:

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;
Then they continue:

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

The absolution by the Bishop then follows:

BISHOP: May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
PEOPLE : Amen.

ONE DEACON | 3
KYRIE
The Kyrie, Eleison (Lord, have mercy) invocations follow. It may be sung or recited.

BISHOP: Lord, have mercy.

PEOPLE : Lord, have mercy.

BISHOP: Christ, have mercy.

PEOPLE : Christ, have mercy.

BISHOP: Lord, have mercy.

PEOPLE : Lord, have mercy.

GLORIA
The Gloria is either sung or said.

BISHOP: Glory to God in the highest,

PEOPLE : and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you,
we bless you,
we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, Almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For You alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord,

4 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

COLLECT
The Bishop, with hands joined, says:

BISHOP: Let us pray.

And all pray in silence with the Bishop for a while.

Then the Bishop says the following prayer with hands extended.

BISHOP: O God,
who have taught the ministers of your Church
to seek not to be served
but to serve their brothers and sisters,
grant, we pray, that this your servant,
whom you graciously choose today
for the office of Deacon,
may be effective in action,
gentle in ministry,
and constant in prayer.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
Who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
PEOPLE : Amen.

After the Collect, the minister brings the miter to the bishop to be worn while sitting
during the readings.

The commentator may say:

COMMENTATOR: Please be seated.

ONE DEACON | 5
LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 61:1-3

A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah.

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,

because the Lord has anointed me;
He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly,
to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
release to the prisoners,
To announce a year of favor from the Lord
and a day of vindication by our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
To place on those who mourn in Zion
a diadem instead of ashes,
To give them oil of gladness instead of mourning,
a glorious mantle instead of a limitless spirit.
They will be called oaks of justice,
the planting of the LORD
to show his glory.

The word of the Lord.

PEOPLE : Thanks be to God.

6 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 40:1 and 3, 6-7a, 7b-8, 9

(R) Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.

I waited, I waited for the Lord

and he stooped down to me;
He heard my cry.
He put a new song into my mouth,
praise of our God. (R)

You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings,

but an open ear.
You do not ask for holocaust and victim.
Instead, here am I. (R)

In the scroll of the book stands written

that I should do your will.
My God, I delight in your law
in the depth of my heart. (R)

Your justice I have proclaimed

in the great assembly.
My lips I have not sealed;
you know it, O Lord. (R)

ONE DEACON | 7
SECOND READING Acts 6:1-7

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

As the number of disciples continued to grow,

the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews
because their widows
were being neglected in the daily distribution.
So the Twelve called together
the community of the disciples and said,
“It is not right for us to neglect the word of God
to serve at table.
Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men,
filled with the Spirit and wisdom,
whom we shall appoint to this task,
whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer
and to the ministry of the word.”
The proposal was acceptable to the whole community,
so they chose Stephen,
a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit,
also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas,
and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
They presented these men to the Apostles
who prayed and laid hands on them.
The word of God continued to spread,
and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem
increased greatly;
even a large group of priests
were becoming obedient to the faith.

The word of the Lord.

PEOPLE : Thanks be to God.

8 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

Then, the commentator may say:

COMMENTATOR: Please stand.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION John 15:4a, 5b

The verse is read when it is not sung.

Alleluia, alleluia.
Remain in me, as I remain in you, says the Lord;
whoever remains in me will bear much fruit.
Alleluia, alleluia.

Meanwhile, if incense is used, the Bishop puts some into the thurible.
After this, the Deacon who is to proclaim the Gospel, bowing profoundly before
the Bishop, asks for the blessing, saying in a low voice:

DEACON: Your blessing, Father.

The Bishop says in a low voice:

BISHOP: May the Lord be in your heart

and on your lips,
that you may proclaim his Gospel
worthily and well,
in the name of the Father, ✠
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
The Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies:

DEACON: Amen.

If, however, a Deacon is not present, a concelebrating Priest, bowing before the
altar, says quietly:

PRIEST : Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God,

that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel.

ONE DEACON | 9
The Deacon, or the concelebrating Priest, then proceeds to the ambo
accompanied, if appropriate, by ministers with incense and candles.

Meanwhile, the minister receives the miter from the bishop and presents the
crozier to him. The bishop stands holding the crozier during the proclamation of
the Gospel.

GOSPEL John 13:1-17

The Deacon, or the Priest, then says:

PRIEST : The Lord be with you.

PEOPLE : And with your Spirit.

PRIEST : ✠ A reading from the Holy Gospel

according to John
While proclaiming these words, at the same time, the priest makes the Sign of the
Cross on the book and on his forehead, lips, and breast. Then, the people
acclaim saying:

PEOPLE : Glory to you, O Lord.

Then the Deacon, or the Priest, incenses the book, if incense is used.

Before the feast of Passover,

Jesus knew that his hour had come
to pass from this world to the Father.
He loved his own in the world
and he loved them to the end.
The devil had already induced Judas,
son of Simon the Iscariot,
to hand him over.
So, during supper,
fully aware that the Father had put everything
into his power
and that he had come from God
and was returning to God,

10 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

he rose from supper
and took off his outer garments.
He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
Then he poured water into a basin
and began to wash the disciples’ feet
and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,
“Master, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“What I am doing,
you do not understand now,
but you will understand later.”
Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered him,
“Unless I wash you,
you will have no inheritance with me.”
Simon Peter said to him,
“Master, then not only my feet,
but my hands and head as well.”
Jesus said to him,
“Whoever has bathed has no need
except to have his feet washed,
for he is clean all over;
so you are clean, but not all.”
For he knew who would betray him;
for this reason, he said,
“Not all of you are clean.”
So when he had washed their feet
and put his garments back on
and reclined at table again,

ONE DEACON | 11
he said to them,
“Do you realize what I have done for you?
You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’
and rightly so, for indeed I am.
If I, therefore, the master and teacher,
have washed your feet,
you ought to wash one another’s feet.
I have given you a model to follow,
so that as I have done for you,
you should also do.”
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
no slave is greater than his master,
nor any messenger
greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand this,
blessed are you if you do it.”

The Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:

PRIEST : The Gospel of the Lord.

PEOPLE : Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

After proclaiming the Gospel, the deacon, or the priest, brings the Book of the
Gospels to the bishop for reverencing.

The commentator may say:

COMMENTATOR: Please remain standing.

Meanwhile, the minister receives the crozier from the bishop.

The Bishop kisses the book saying quietly:

Through the words of the Gospel

may our sins be wiped away.

12 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

The Bishop may impart a blessing to the people with the Book of the Gospels.

Then, the deacon or the priest closes the Book of the Gospels and reverently
places the Book of the Gospels on the altar, where it remains until it is presented
to the newly ordained Deacon.

The commentator may say:

COMMENTATOR: Please be seated.

RITE OF ORDINATION
The ordination begins after the gospel.

The Bishop, if necessary, goes to the seat prepared for the Ordination. The
minister presents the miter to him, and he sits while wearing his miter.

Meanwhile, the commentator reads the brief catechetical instruction.

COMMENTATOR: The ecclesial character

of ministry and ordination
is particularly evident in the calling of candidates.
Ministers are of the Church and they represent her.
They are public figures of leadership
in and for the Church,
ordained by the bishop
in the presence of the community.
When the Church chooses its candidates,
this is understood
to be the announcement of God’s choice,
as the Rite of Ordination is the act of the Church,
through which God acts.
God announces and accomplishes His will
through the Church’s election and ordination;
and the Church’s action
makes known and realizes God’s provident gift.

ONE DEACON | 13
ELECTION OF THE CANDIDATE
The one to be ordained Deacon is called by the Master of Students.

MASTER OF STUDENTS: Let him to be ordained Deacon

come forward.
Br. Glen Mar Tubigan Gamboa, OP

The candidate comes forward and replies:

CANDIDATE: Present.
The candidate goes to the Bishop, to whom he makes a sign of reverence.

PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATE

When the candidate is in his place before the Bishop, the Prior Provincial says:

PRIOR PROVINCIAL: Most Reverend Father,

holy Mother Church asks you
to ordain this man, our brother,
to the responsibility of the Diaconate.
The Bishop asks:

BISHOP: Do you know him to be worthy?

The Prior Provincial replies:

PRIOR PROVINCIAL: After inquiry

among the Christian people
and upon the recommendation
of those responsible,
I testify that he has been found worthy.

14 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

ELECTION BY THE BISHOP
AND CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE
The Bishop says:

BISHOP: Relying on the help of the Lord God

and our Savior Jesus Christ,
we choose this, our brother,
for the Order of the Diaconate.
All present says:

PEOPLE : Thanks be to God.

The elect presents himself to the people, and the congregation gives their assent
by clapping their hands (applause). Then, the candidate returns to his seat.

HOMILY
Then the Bishop, while all are seated, gives the Homily.

After delivering his Homily. The Bishop, if he preached from the ambo, goes back
to the seat prepared for the Ordination. He sits while wearing his miter and with
his crozier (staff).

Meanwhile, the commentator reads the brief catechetical instruction.

COMMENTATOR: The ones ordained

are not merely functionary
but ministers of Christ and of the Church.
Their calling requires a full personal response,
commitment to this ministry
and holiness of life in imitation of Christ.
Thus in the presence of the bishop,
the brotherhood of priests
and the whole Christian community,
the candidates will express their willingness
to accept the mission
Christ has entrusted to them.

ONE DEACON | 15
PROMISE OF THE ELECT
Then, the elect for the Diaconate alone rises and stands before the Bishop, who
questions him in these words:

BISHOP: Dear son,

before you enter the Order of the Diaconate,
you must declare before the people
your intention to undertake this office.
Do you resolve
to be consecrated for the Church’s ministry
by the laying on of my hands
and the gift of the Holy Spirit?
The elect replies:

ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve

to discharge the office of Deacon
with humble charity
in order to assist the priestly Order
and to benefit the Christian people?
ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve

to hold fast to the mystery of faith
with a clear conscience,
as the Apostle urges,
and to proclaim this faith in word and deed
according to the Gospel
and the Church’s tradition?
ELECT: I do.

16 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

BISHOP: Do you resolve
to keep forever this commitment
to remain celibate
as a sign of your dedication to Christ the Lord
for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven,
in the service of God and man?
ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve

to maintain and deepen the spirit of prayer
that is proper to your way of life
and, in keeping with this spirit
and what is required of you,
to celebrate faithfully the Liturgy of the Hours
with and for the People of God
and indeed for the whole world?
ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve

to conform your way of life always
to the example of Christ,
of whose Body and Blood
you are a minister at the altar?
ELECT: I do, with the help of God.

ONE DEACON | 17
PROMISE OF OBEDIENCE
Then the elect goes to the Bishop and, kneeling before him, places his joined
hands between those of the Bishop.

The Bishop then asks:

BISHOP: Do you promise respect and obedience

to the diocesan Bishop
and to your legitimate superior?
ELECT: I do.

The Bishop concludes saying:

BISHOP: May God

who has begun the good work in you
bring it to fulfillment.

And the elect returns to his designated place in the sanctuary.

18 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

LITANY OF SUPPLICATION
The commentator may say:

COMMENTATOR: Please stand.

Then all stand. After putting aside the miter, the Bishop stands, faces the people,
and, with hands joined, invites them to pray:

BISHOP: My dear people,

let us pray that God the all-powerful Father
will mercifully pour out
the grace of his blessing
on this, his servant,
whom in his kindness
he raises to the sacred Order
of the Diaconate.

The elect prostrate himself and the Litany is sung. The Deacon, or in the absence
of a deacon, the commentator, may say:

After the singing of the Litany, the Bishop standing, with hands extended, sings
or says:

BISHOP: Lord God,

mercifully hear our prayers
and graciously accompany with your help
what we undertake by virtue of our office.
Sanctify by your blessing this man we present,
for in our judgment we believe him worthy
to exercise sacred ministries.
Through Christ our Lord.
The people reply:

PEOPLE : Amen.

ONE DEACON | 21
LAYING ON OF HANDS AND PRAYER OF ORDINATION
As the elect rises, the commentator reads the brief catechetical instruction:

COMMENTATOR: The most solemn moments of Ordination Rites

are the laying on of hands
and the Prayer of Ordination.
The imposition of the bishop’s hands
is a sign of blessing
whereby the gift of the Holy Spirit
is conferred on the candidate,
who, in turn, is empowered for its exercise.

Then, the elect goes to the Bishop, who stands at his chair wearing the miter, and
kneels before him.

The Bishop lays his hands upon his head without saying anything.

With the elect kneeling before him, the Bishop puts aside the miter, and, with
hands extended, he sings or says the Prayer of Ordinations:

BISHOP: Draw near, we pray, almighty God,

giver of every grace,
who apportion every order
and assign every office;
who remain unchanged,
but make all things new.
In your eternal providence,
you make provision for every age,
as you order all creation
through him who is your word,
your power, and your wisdom,
Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

22 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

You grant that the Church, his Body,
adorned with manifold heavenly graces,
drawn together in the diversity of its members
and united by a wondrous bond
through the Holy Spirit;
should grow and spread forth
to build up a new temple
and, as once you chose the sons of Levi
to minister in the former tabernacle,
so now you establish three ranks of ministers
in their sacred offices to serve in your name.
And so, in the first days of your Church,
through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
your Son’s Apostles
appointed seven men of good repute
to assist them in the daily ministry,
that they might devote themselves more fully
to prayer and preaching of the word.
By prayer and the laying on of hands
they entrusted to those chosen men
the ministry of serving at table.
We beseech you, Lord:
look with favor on this servant of yours
who will minister at your holy altar
and whom we now humbly dedicate
to the office of Deacon.

ONE DEACON | 23
Send forth upon him, Lord, we pray,
the Holy Spirit,
that he may be strengthened
by the gift of your sevenfold grace
for the faithful carrying out
of the work of the ministry.
May there abound in him
every Gospel virtue:
unfeigned love,
concern for the sick and poor,
unassuming authority,
the purity of innocence
and the observance of spiritual discipline.
May your commandments
shine forth in his conduct,
so that by the example of his way of life
he may inspire the imitation
of your holy people.
In offering the witness of a clear conscience,
may he remain strong and steadfast in Christ,
so that by imitating on earth your Son,
who came not to be served but to serve,
he may be found worthy
to reign in heaven with him.
Who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
The people reply:

PEOPLE : Amen.

24 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

INVESTITURE WITH STOLE AND DALMATIC
After the Prayer of Ordination, all sit. The commentator may say:

COMMENTATOR: Please be seated.

The Bishop puts on the miter and the newly ordained Deacon stands. One of the
assisting Deacons or another minister puts a diaconal stole and then a dalmatic
on him.

Then the commentator reads the brief catechetical instruction:

COMMENTATOR: The vestment given to the newly ordained

are visual symbols of the order
which has been conferred.
The dalmatic and stole remind him that in his ministry,
he is empowered to serve the People of God
in the ministries of the liturgy, the word and charity.

During the investiture, an appropriate liturgical song may be sung.

ONE DEACON | 25
HANDING ON OF THE BOOK OF THE GOSPELS
Vested as Deacon, the newly ordained Deacon goes to the Bishop and kneels
before him. The Bishop places the Book of the Gospels in the hands of the newly
ordained Deacon and says:

BISHOP: Receive the Gospel of Christ,

whose herald you have become.
Believe what you read,
teach what you believe,
and practice what you teach.

The newly ordained Deacon proceeds to his designated place in the sanctuary.
The Ordination of a Priest then follows.

26 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

KISS OF PEACE
The commentator reads the brief catechetical instruction:

COMMENTATOR: The newly ordained

shall be welcomed by the Bishop
with an embrace of peace,
sign of cordial acceptance into the Holy Orders.

The Bishop gives the newly ordained Deacon the fraternal kiss, saying:

BISHOP: Peace be with you.

The newly ordained replies:

And with your spirit.

Likewise, all the Deacons present, or at least some of them, give the fraternal kiss
to the newly ordained Deacon. During the fraternal kiss, an appropriate liturgical
song may be sung.

The Mass continues in the usual way. The Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful)
is omitted.

ONE DEACON | 27
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

The Liturgy of the Eucharist is concelebrated in the usual way. The newly ordained
Deacon assists the Bishop at the altar.

PRESENTATION OF GIFTS
Meanwhile, the ministers place the corporal, the purificator, the chalice, the pall,
and the Missal on the altar.
The Bishop, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it
slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

Blessed are You Lord, God of all creation,

for through your goodness
we have received the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the Bread of Life.
Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal.
If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Bishop may speak these words
aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

PEOPLE : Blessed be God forever.

The Bishop then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with
both hands, saying in a low voice:

Blessed are You Lord, God of all creation,

for through your goodness
we have received the wine we offer you:
fruit of the vine and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.
Then he places the chalice on the corporal.
If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words
aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

PEOPLE : Blessed be God forever.

28 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

After this, the Bishop, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart

may we be accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this day
be pleasing to you, Lord God.
If appropriate, he also incenses the offerings, the cross, and the altar. A Deacon
or other minister then incenses the Bishop, the concelebrating priests and the
people.

Then the Bishop, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.

The commentator may invite the people saying:

COMMENTATOR: Please stand.

INVITATION TO PRAYER
Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining
his hands, the Bishop says:

BISHOP: Pray, brothers and sisters,

that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God,
the Almighty Father.
PEOPLE : May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands,
for the praise and glory of His name,
for our good, and the good of all his holy Church.

ONE DEACON | 29
30 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS
Then the Bishop, with hands extended, says the Prayer over the Offerings:

BISHOP: Holy Father, whose Son chose to wash

the disciples’ feet
and so set us an example,
accept, we pray,
the oblations of our service,
and grant that, offering ourselves
as a spiritual sacrifice,
we may be filled
with a spirit of humility and zeal.
Through Christ our Lord.
PEOPLE : Amen.

After the Prayer over the Offerings, before the Preface, before the bishop says,
“The Lord Be with you” he will take off his zucchetto (skullcap). The minister
receives the zucchetto and places it on the bishop’s chair.

ONE DEACON | 31
PREFACE OF ORDINATION
CHRIST, SOURCE OF ALL MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH
Extending his hands, the Bishop says:

BISHOP: The Lord be with you.

PEOPLE : And with your Spirit.
The Bishop, raising his hands, continues:

BISHOP: Lift up your hearts.

PEOPLE : We lift them up to the Lord.

The Bishop, with hands extended, adds:

BISHOP: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

PEOPLE : It is right and just.
The Bishop, with hands extended, continues the Preface:

BISHOP: It is truly right and just,

our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
For by the anointing of the Holy Spirit
you made your Only Begotten Son
High Priest of the new and eternal covenant,
and by your wondrous design
were pleased to decree
that many ministries be exercised
in the Church.

32 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

For Christ not only adorns
with a royal priesthood
the people he has made his own,
but with a brother’s kindness
he also chooses men
to become sharers in his sacred ministry
through the laying on of hands.
He chooses them
to lead your holy people in charity,
to nourish them with the word
and strengthen them with the Sacraments.
As they give up their lives for you
and for the salvation
of their brothers and sisters,
they strive to be conformed
to the image of Christ himself
and offer you a constant witness
of faith and love.
And so, Lord, with all the Angels and Saints,
we, too, give you thanks,
as in exultation we acclaim:

At the end of the Preface he joins his hands and concludes the Preface with the
people, singing or saying aloud:

PEOPLE : Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

The commentator may say:

COMMENTATOR: Please kneel.

ONE DEACON | 33
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III
The Bishop, with hands extended, says:

BISHOP: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, Celebrant alone

and all you have created

rightly gives you praise,
for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
by the power and working of the Holy Spirit,
you give life to all things
and make them holy,
and you never cease
to gather a people to yourself,
so that from the rising of the sun to its setting
a pure sacrifice may be offered to your
name.
He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:

Therefore, O Lord, Celebrant

with concelebrants
we humbly implore you:
by the same Spirit graciously make holy
these gifts we have brought to you
for consecration,
He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross once over the bread and
chalice together, saying:

that they may become

the Body and ✠ Blood
of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
He joins his hands.

at whose command
we celebrate these mysteries.

34 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

In the formulas that follow, the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly
and distinctly, as the nature of these words requires.

For on the night he was betrayed,

He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he himself took bread,

and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,
broke the bread
and gave it to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU AND EAT OF IT,

FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and
genuflects in adoration.

ONE DEACON | 35
After this, he continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took the chalice,

and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,
and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,

FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW
AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT
FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.
He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in
adoration.

The commentator may say.

COMMENTATOR: Please stand.

Then the Bishop says:

BISHOP: The mystery of faith. Celebrant alone

And the people continue, acclaiming:

PEOPLE : We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

36 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

Then the Bishop, with hands extended, says:

BISHOP: Therefore, O Lord, Celebrant

with concelebrants
as we celebrate the memorial
of the saving Passion of your Son,
his wondrous Resurrection
and Ascension into heaven,
and as we look forward
to his second coming,
we offer you in thanksgiving
this holy and living sacrifice.
Look, we pray,
upon the oblation of your Church
and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim
by whose death
you willed to reconcile us to yourself,
grant that we, who are nourished
by the Body and Blood of your Son
and filled with his Holy Spirit,
may become one body, one spirit in Christ.

ONE DEACON | 37
Celebrant or one concelebrant continues:

May he make of us One concelebrant

an eternal offering to you,

so that we may obtain an inheritance
with your elect,
especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of God,
with Blessed Joseph, Her Spouse,
with your blessed Apostles
and glorious Martyrs
with Saint Dominic and Saint Francis,
Saint Vincent Ferrer,
and with all the Saints,
on whose constant intercession
in your presence
we rely for unfailing help.

Celebrant or one concelebrant continues: One concelebrant

May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation,

we pray, O Lord,
advance the peace
and salvation of all the world.
Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity
your pilgrim Church on earth,
with your servant Francis our Pope
and Honesto our Bishop,
with the Order of Bishops,
this your servant,
who have been ordained today
as a minister for the Church,

all the clergy,
and the entire people
you have gained for your own.
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family,
whom you have summoned before you:
in your compassion, O merciful Father,
gather to yourself all your children
scattered throughout the world.

Celebrant or one concelebrant continues: One concelebrant

To our departed brothers and sisters

and to all who were pleasing to you
at their passing from this life,
give kind admittance to your kingdom.
There we hope to enjoy for ever
the fullness of your glory

through Christ our Lord,

through whom you bestow on the world
all that is good.

The Bishop takes the chalice and the paten with the host and, raising both, he
says:

Through him, and with him, and in him,

O God Almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honor is yours,
for ever and ever.
The people acclaim:

PEOPLE : Amen.

ONE DEACON | 39
COMMUNION RITE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Bishop, with hands joined,
says:

BISHOP: At the Savior’s command

and formed by divine teaching,
we dare to say:
He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:

PEOPLE : Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

With hands extended, the Bishop alone continues, saying:

BISHOP: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,

graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands. The people conclude the prayer, acclaiming:

PEOPLE : For the kingdom,

the power and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

INVITATION AND SIGN OF PEACE
Then the Bishop, with hands extended, says aloud:

BISHOP: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles:

Peace I leave you, my peace I give you,
look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity
in accordance with your will.
He joins his hands.

Who live and reign for ever and ever.

The people reply:

PEOPLE : Amen.

The Bishop, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands,
adds:

BISHOP: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

PEOPLE : And with your Spirit.
Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Bishop, adds:

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

All offer one another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that expresses peace,
communion, and charity.

ONE DEACON | 41
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
Then Bishop takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in
the chalice, saying quietly:

BISHOP: May this mingling of the Body and Blood

of our Lord Jesus Christ
bring eternal life to us who receive it.
Meanwhile the following is sung or said:

PEOPLE : Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
grant us peace.
The invocation may even be repeated several times if the fraction is prolonged.
Only the final time, however, is ‘grant us peace’ said.

The commentator may say.

COMMENTATOR: Please all kneel.

PRAYER BEFORE COMMUNION

Then, the Bishop, with hands joined, says quietly:

BISHOP: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,

who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit,
through your Death gave life to the world,
free me by this,
your most holy Body and Blood,
from all my sins and from every evil;
keep me always faithful
to your commandments,
and never let me be parted from you.

42 | MASS AND RITE OF ORDINATION

Or:

May the receiving of your Body and Blood,

Lord Jesus Christ,
not bring me to judgment
and condemnation,
but through your loving mercy
be for me protection in mind and body
and a healing remedy.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION
The Bishop genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the
paten or above the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:

BISHOP: Behold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away
the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called
to the supper of the Lamb.
And together with the people he adds once:

PEOPLE : Lord, I am not worthy

that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The Bishop, facing the altar, says quietly:

May the Body of Christ

keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ.

Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:

May the Blood of Christ

keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.

ONE DEACON | 43
ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
While the Priest is receiving the Body of Christ, before the Communion Song
begins, the act of spiritual communion is recited.

My Jesus,
I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON Matthew 20:28

While the Bishop is receiving the Body of Christ, the Communion Song begins. If
there is no song, the communion antiphon is recited.

The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve

and to give his life as a ransom for many.

PURIFICATION
When the distribution of Communion is over, the Priest or a Deacon or an acolyte
purifies the paten over the chalice and also the chalice itself. While he carries
out the purification, the Priest says quietly:

What has passed our lips as food, O Lord,

may we possess in purity of heart,
that what has been given to us in time
may be our healing for eternity.

Then the Bishop may return to the chair. If appropriate, a sacred silence may
be observed for a while, or a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may
be sung.

ONE DEACON | 45
