Emoticons
for everyone!
The “inventors”
1963: The artist Harvey R. Ball invents
the “smiley”, the famous round, yellow face
made with a colon (the eyes) and a round
bracket (the smiley mouth). :)

1982: The American scientist

Scott Fahlman introduces
2 emoticons in written
language for the first time:
:-) and :-(.
The reason? The need to
express a happy or sad tone
while chatting online.

1995: The Japanese engineer, Shigetaka

Kurita, produces a series of signs which
can express every human emotion (joy,
sadness, surprise, shyness fear, etc...). He
uses punctuation marks!

Whale, is one of the most exciting and most

dangerous and also most beautiful creatures in
the sea … let’s find out more.

Orcas are actually a type of dolphin which live in many

different parts of the world including Great Britain. They
generally eat fish or seals. They are black and white, they
are usually between 5.5 and 10 metres long and they
can weigh up to 9 tonnes! That’s about the same as a
Tyrannosaurus Rex, or 2 elephants … or 6 hippos!

Orcas travel the seas in family groups called “pods”.

Many different groups of orcas visit Great Britain during
the year but one group has a permanent home in the sea
between North-West Scotland and Ireland. And you can
take a trip from the coast of Scotland or Ireland to see
these very special creatures in their natural habitat!
