PHASES OF THE MOON

for Science Grade 5

Quarter 4/Week 4

1
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit is prepared to help you enhance your

knowledge about the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the
moon. It will be your guide as you experience and learn new scientific
concepts.

In this learning kit you are expected understand the pattern in

the changes in the appearance of the moon and appreciate the
apparent changes in the shape of the moon in our environment.

It is divided into three parts:

A. What happened: It is where the learners are going to answer

the exercises to determine their prior knowledge about the
learning competency.

B. What you learn: It is in this part that the learners will be

able to know more knowledge about the learning
competency.

C. What I have learned: It is in this part that the learners to

gauge their level of mastery of the identified learning
competency.

It is expected that the learners will be equipped with the skills of

the learning standards and use them in their day to day activities.
2
OBJECTIVES:
K Identify the different phases of the moon S Draw
the different phases of the moon
A Appreciate God’s creation by being aware of the apparent
changes of the appearance of the moon.

LEARNING COMPTENCIES:
Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the moon.
(S5FE-IVgh-7)

I. WHAT HAPPENED

Have you wondered how it Let’s read on and

feels to be on the moon? Have do the activities in
you noticed that its shape seem our modules to
to change from time to time? find out more
about the moon.

3
PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
A. MATCHING TYPE: Match the illustration of the phases of the moon with its name.
Write the letter of the correct answer in your notebook.

A B

1. A. full moon

B. new moon
2.

International Development

A. TRUE OR FALSE. Write TRUE if the statement is true about the moon and
FALSE if it is not true. Write your answers in your notebook.

1. The moon is not a planet but a satellite.

2. The moon has its own light. It does not get its light from the sun.
3. The shape of the moon seems to change from time to time.
4. It is full moon when the moon is between the sun and the earth.
5. We see a small edge of the moon lighted on new moon.
6. The changes in the shape of the moon we see are called phases of the moon.

4
7. New moon occurs when the earth is between sun and moon.
8. Gibbous moon occurs when we see more than half of the moon lighted.
9.After the gibbous moon half of the moon’s face is seen. We see last quarter.
10. After the crescent moon half of the moon is lighted. We see the first quarter.

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

The Moon

Let’s get to know more about the Moon.

You have seen the beautiful full moon

appears on the horizon. The moon is not a planet but
a satellite. A satellite is an object in space that
revolves around a planet. A moon makes one
complete revolution around the earth in 27 1/3 to 29
1/2 days. The shape of the moon is round.

However, its shape seems to change from

time to time. There are times the moon
looks round as a plate. Sometimes it appears like a banca. These apparent changes in the
moon’s shape are called phases.

The moon shines by the reflected sunlight. Only one half of it is lighted at any time.
So, as the moon revolves around the Earth, the moon changes its position in relation to the
observer on Earth.

5
Different Phases of the Moon

Phases of the Moon Description

When the moon is between the sun and the Earth,
you cannot see the moon; it is called new moon.
During this phase, the moon is not visible from the
earth. This is because the side of the moon that is
facing us is not being lit by the sun.
After a new moon, when the moon seems to be
growing, it is undergoing a waxing phase. As the
moon stars to appear in a semicircular form,
waxing crescent starts to appear.

About a week after the new moon, you see half

of the lighted side of the moon. This is called the

first quarter moon.

6
When most of the portion of the moon is visible in the sky,
it is known as waxing gibbous.

A week after the first quarter moon, you can see half of the
moon’s lighted side of the moon. This is called the full
moon. A full moon appears as an entire circle in the sky.

After full moon, the waning phase of the moon starts. It is

when the moon appears to be getting smaller each night.
Waning gibbous appears after a full moon. Waning means
it is getting smaller.

On the third week of the month, you again see half of the
moon’s lighted part. This is called the last quarter
moon. Soon the moon disappears again; another new
moon appears.

During the Waning Crescent Moon phase, the illuminated

part of the Moon decreases from the lit-up semicircle at
Third Quarter until it disappears entirely at New Moon.

LET’S SUMMARIZE

Satellites are objects that revolve around an object bigger than they are.
Our moon is an example of a natural satellite.

The moon takes 29½ days to complete one cycle. This period is called a
month.

The moon only borrows light from the sun. The light you can see from
the moon is just a reflected light from the sun.

The moon appears to have different phases because of the different

amount of light it reflects from the sun as it revolves around the Earth.

III. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

EVALUATION/POST TEST:

A. Identification: Identify the phases of the moon. Write your answers in your notebook.

Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct, and FALSE if it is not. Write your
answers in your notebook.

_______5. After the crescent moon, half of the moon is lighted.
_______6. The moon takes 29½ days to complete one cycle.
_______7. Moon has light of its own.
